So I'm considering doing a factory reset...

My phone's gotten really slow lately. I'm considering restoring the OS and starting over again because I've been experimenting with stuff I barely need lately. How would I go about doing the absolute freshest install I possibly can? No, I don't want things to re-download or anything. I want to set it all back up like before. It's not really that hard to do, after all!

The only thing I'd like to backup is my contacts if that's possible, but if it's not possible to back JUST that up and nothing else, I'll re-input them manually, I only have around 50 so it won't take me too long.

Thanks in advance!

If you were to have just the apps you want to keep on your phone and then do a factory wipe, would it restore just those apps that are installed?

If so, then that would be the same as wiping the phone and re-installing just the apps you want, right?

No one answered this question, so I performed a factory wipe and let it reinstall all of the programs I had at the time of the wipe. It only took about 30 minutes to have my phone setup exactly as it was before the wipe, including all of the program settings for each app.

Bottom line: Absolutely nothing was gained memory wise. My phone is idling with the same amount of free memory as it had before the wipe.

It seems that installing and uninstalling apps does not hurt the phone at all.

Quick question......

Did the factory reset make the phone snappier? i"m considering doing it from time to time.....say every month...or couple of months if it will provide an appreciable speed bump.

I don't know too much about file systems........but I'm guessing that would clean out left over junk from applications that have been uninstalled?

Thanks!

I've actually done the factory reset 3 times on my phone. I'll play with a bunch of stuff, download a crap load of widgets and apps and then all of a sudden I'll get an app or widget that don't play nice together and un-installing doesn't seam to help. So I'll go through my app list, un-install the stuff I haven't used in a-while and then do the factory reset. I usually have my phone, contacts, calendar, home-screen and apps all re-installed and set up in about 30 minutes. Each time I've done it I noticed a significant change in speed and "snappy-ness" of the phone. I bought the phone middle of Nov, and I've done my playing. I have a pretty good set of core apps that I use constantly so I'm not doing as much downloading and installing as I once did. So now the phone just flies. Can't wait for the 2.1 update!

Just did it this weekend and it made almost no difference in speed. Not really any snappier. However rooting and loading the latest 2.1 ROM made the system noticeably faster. :)

Ah.....Thanks both........

I'm going to do a factory wipe then........

Right now.....I feel rooting is not necessary for me......since the DROID is one the premier smart phones out there and is well supported by Google, Motorola and Verizon as they all have considerably invested in it.

In about a year or so, once other phones replace this one....and they lost interest in this one......thats when I think rooting will make most sense as there will be functionalities the new phones have that I think will be ported over to older generation phones like the droids.

But for right now......I can wait until the Jan update.....depending on what it is....If it's not 2.1 then I might just be persuaded to do it if it makes the phone speedier.

Sloth......is there a single ROM out there now that is stable and has everything working?...like GPS, file permissions etc? Is there anything on 2.1 that is NOT working for you?

I've been reading all the threads......but I can't seem to find any great must-have functionality that has been included with 2.1.
