College Student Goes To Cancun For A Week, Comes Back To $11,667 Sprint Bill

It looks like, if she's telling the complete truth, that there must have been some kind of error. Wasn't there something going on with Verizon that people were getting much higher data usage than they were actually using?

She also said that her phone wasn't activated for international service. Those data charges were for international service.

I remember something like this happening when the iPhone originally came out. Someone took theirs on a cruise in the Mediterranean, and didn't use the phone at all, but it was doing it's thing with going out automatically every however often they had it set to check, so it was using roaming data without them actually doing anything. Oops!

I have actually seen worse. when i worked at at&t there was a customer who had a 13,000$ phone bill. it was a family of 4 who all were roaming in canada on 4 smartphones AND had a laptop connect card that they thought was unlimited. it was a disaster phone call for me. we got it taken care of though.

I worked in customer service for Voicestream (now T-mobile) way back in 2001-2002. I got a call from someone who wanted to pay his bill. I thought he was going to flip when I told him that his bill was over $17,000  for just one line. Without hesitation he gave me his credit card number and paid the balance. I looked at his billing history because I wanted to know why it was so high. Over the course of a year his bills ranged from $70 all the way up to $25,000/month because he traveled to Russia several times a year. Must have been a multi-millionaire or something.

She seems to be upset about $9000. What the hell did she do to rack up the other 2 grand she seems to be ok about?

You beat me to it.

$11,667.73 - $9,836.46 = $1831.27 in charges unrelated to data. Wtf was she doing?

Personally I think its completely her fault (I know it was taken care of but still). If her phone wasn't activated for international roaming what did she think was loading her facebook page? The data fairy? It's cancun, either get off facebook for a friggin week or use the hotel wireless or business center. Almost every resort has hotel computers you can log into like 20 min a day.

Yes i also seen people pay ridiculous bills such as that. Most of them being High-end business people with multiple account and numerous plan on the same accounts.

There was some article going around a while ago about a guy who used a data card on a cruise to stream a Bears game.. incurred 22K in charges.. lol

On one hand you need to be responsible as a consumer.. but on the other companies should have something to safe guard an account from insane amounts of overages.. it just helps them stay out of the press for these kinda things in the long run.

Agreed. Some credit card companies will flag and suspend your card if you go from 3 years of moderate charges in the US to thousands in charges in Mexico over the course of 2 days. Cell phone companies should do the same. At a certain point, suspend the account and call the customer. Customer says "yea thats me, I don't care about money" then unlock the account and away you go.
