So far I've had bad luck trying to play videos on my DI. I didn't spend a lot of time looking into what it takes to play videos but I assumed it would be pretty straight forward and "drag 'n' drop."

I've loaded a .mp4, .avi, and a .mkv. So far, none of them work. I didn't try them all at the same time (mostly because each time I just threw the video on there, assumed it would work, then found out later it didn't) so they have all been different videos, thus shouldn't be corrupted files.

What do I need to do to get them to play?

The one built in, IMO, has very limited compatibility. RockPlayer can play just about everything, even divx codecs, and supports subtitles (I watch anime now and then)

RockPlayer works. The only video file I have on my phone right now is a .AVI but it didn't have any problems. I am very new to the .mkv file type but from what I understand it's extremely high quality video. My netbook wouldn't even play it and kept crashing. I'll have to load it back onto the Incredible and see how well it handles that same file. If it works I bet it's SUPER clear on this screen :D

You have to make sure that you encode it correctly. I had trouble viewing videos (wmv and mkv) and it all went away once I figured out how to encode it correctly for the Dinc.

I now use the default video player and have no issues.

Just do the following
1. Downloaded "Handbrake" ...its free.
2. Used the preset (on the right) of iphone/Ipod touch....that will get it to work correctly.
