Root sd, rom manager, kernel problem

I have been fooling around flashing some differnent kernels today and have run into a problem.
I went to Rom Manager to flash a rom and it stopped and rebooted. I tried it again and it rebooted. I figured there was a problem with Rom Manager so I uninstalled it and tried to reinstall but it said there was no room for it on my phone.
I checked the sd card & storage and it showed there was not space on my card. It was only a third full earlier today. Now I am stuck without being able to install anything. The phone works but the sd card show 0.0 for total space and 0.0 for available space.

Any ideas? I am lost.

Something seems to have dumped a load on my sd card. I moved a couple of apps from the sd card to hte phone and and had 7+ mb free. I reinstalled rom manager and tried to flash a new kernel. If failed and I had to reboot. When I did I now only have 3+mb free?

have you tried hooking up the Droid to your computer via USB cable, mounting it and looking through the card? Do you have something like Astro or another file manager that can look at file sizes?

you need to go in and see what is such a big file.

maybe go into settings > application settings > manage apps > and look at file sizes or see about the cache size of some of the files?

The AndroZip file is 264 mb and within that file 2010-06-05.15.32 and within that is a system.img file that is 113,644 kb. There is also a .trash-1000 file with 102 mb.

If you have used Rom Manager to flash numerous roms, did you check off the option to do a backup? If you did, most likely you have a boatload of nandroid backups taking up space.

Hook up your Droid to your computer or check using a file manager on the Droid. Look for backup under the Clockwork directory.

You are right, I did backup everytime I flashed a new kernel.

Thanks, I just reformated the sd card. Lost a couple of things but... anyway I will try your suggestion the next time should it come up...much easier.

It took me 2 hours to get the phone up and running again. I thought it was done for. I rebooted and tried to recover and it went to a previous rom and then shut down in the middle of installation and I got layered warnings on the screen (never have seen that before). I was finally able to go back to a previous save date (always backup!!), reflashed the latest rom, reformated the sd card and started loading. I was already planning a trip to verizon to pick up the D2. It is really amazing how you can pull out of seemingly hopeless situations with this phone.

Bonus is that the phone is now way snappier than it was, go figure.

one thing I always do is after a few recent backups, I hook up to my computer, off load the older backups onto my computer, keep only the most recent I would really want to roll back to on my SD card, but this way, I have a copy of every backup I have ever made on my computer and keep SD card bloat down.

Where are the backups on the sd card, that sounds like a great idea. I was fiddling around opening every file on the card trying to find the culprit last night.

there are 2 places I pull from depending on how you did your backups...

if you used ROM Manager to do a ROM backup, look into the directory clockworkmod / backup

if you used nandroid to make backups, done by booting into recovery and selecting backup, look into the directory nandroid

I essentially copied my entire SD card to my computer - takes a few hours - and then about every week, depending on what I changed, I pull newer stuff off the SD card and put it into my local copy of my SD card on my computer. then I pretty much always have any data from any point and I could load back pictures, old ROMs, kernels, etc. I then just maintain that local computer version of my SD card. I even pull over older Titanium Backup and MyBackup Pro backup files as well.

Funny thing is when all heck broke loose last night I went to reboot to backup and I had so many backup dates there they practically filled the page. Guess I have been flashing a few roms and kernels lately.

well, they are not all worth keeping. I do them about weekly IF I make ROM or major changes so you kinda have to know - or by date - which ones are keepers in your case. in your case it would/could take hours just to copy al of them... so pick a few backups to keep.

when i did my recovery backup.....i didnt have an option for nandroid backup all it said was back up. i back up both ways using rom manager and clockwork recovery

do they both do the same thing? or did one just overwrite the other and it just ends up in

clockworkmod-->backup-->and then a file with the date

On the Motorola A855 Droid and CWRecovery, it's not spelled out as a 'nandroid' backup/restore, I think it just says backup and/or restore. Same with using rom manager. And each backup does not get overwriteen by a new one, as they all usually have a date stamp as well.

However, this is with these versions of the above mentioned apps and recoveries on the Motorola A855, I have no idea for sure if it is the same for the HTC Incredible. You might want to check the all things root section here for the Incredible to make sure.
