Root Maintaining root after 2.2 (what I did)

I removed a bunch of stock apps and had to flash the sbf file. done.

After that I downloaded one click root. Rooted.

Followed the steps in the "installing 2.2 froyo thread" running the commands and what not. When they say to use root explore. you are just moving the su file to the path they are comanding you to. fine the su file on 2.1 and move to the xbin location like they said.

I did all that.

rebooted into recovery. installed 2.2. after you are done setting up, you need to use astro file manager and find the su apk and install it. thats it. then all the programs requiring root will ask for permission.

hey guys, i had a stock dx w/2.1, rooted using universalandroot and then installed the update before moving the SU to the xbin, does that mean i lost root? am i screwed now? what do i do?

I didn't use root explorer, though I am assuming that it would be easier. I used adb. For some reason while installing 2.2 the su apk didn't carry over. How I found this out is when I tried to install root explorer and couldn't, do I opened the app tray and didn't see the super user ninja dude... So I opened astro and found the su apk and launched, opened root explorer again and su permission was requested.

And to droider 13 I was just explaining my self didn't not mean to come off sarcastic. Its just info. we are all here to help one another.

yes I believe you lost root, though I think 2.2 has the same or similar exploit as 2.1, so there might be a tut coming soon or you have to flash the sbf, root, move the su to the xbin and then install 2.2.

still being a noob here, but will flashing the sbf completely erase my phone to "out of the box" status, including contacts, settings, apps, photos? is there a way to create a backup of my info from 2.2, flash sbf to 2.1, reload data, re-root, move su file, then apply update again?

one other thing, for some reason (and idk if it means anything) i still have the Superuser app in my app tray with the crossbones, except there is nothing listed in the apps. hope it helps

photos are on your sdcard, contacts are backed up through your gmail account, apps you can back up with Titanium backup

Cuz the only way to flash the sbf file from 2.2 to 2.1 is to wipe data and cache first. I would wait to reload data till you are on 2.2 but the rest is right

I had to run sbf because I had removed a bunch of bloat ware and didn't want to go through the trouble of finding and installing. I ran the sbf after it was done, phone rebooted nothing erased on my phone except root, and it installed my bloat ware I needed. Now if you are running 2.2
I'm not sure if the sbf will delete anything. 2.2 is worth the trouble and having the sbf file while you can is always helpful to have lying around. So run sbf per the instructsions, use one click root, move su to the xbin using root explorer, make sure the su is on sd card in the event that you don't get permissions request s while installing apps that need root. Install 2.2 phone will reboot. After reboot, reboot again.

Note after running the sbf you have to do the *228 so you get the 3g network back up

It would be nice if universalandroot did this by default.

I just rooted with universalandroot and moved my su file.

Whenever i boot, i get the moto logo that won't go away and i have to keep pulling battery over and over till it boots up right, so even if i try to flash, there is very little chance for me to get into the recovery to actually flash it. Any other suggestions?

when you say recovery do you mean "recovery" as in holding home and the power button then pressing search or the bootloader when you hold the power, volume down and camera button

yea, because when the moto logo won't go away and i boot up, i can hear as if the os start up fine, its just that the logo won't go away. I can hear the sound made when the phone loads the sd card and if i use the same motion to unlock the phone, i can feel the haptic response and can turn off the phone by approximating the motions to power off. However, i can't see anything other than the moto logo. now i tried powering up using the power,home and volume button but all i still see is the logo! so i can't necissarily try to just flash sbf.
help?

I tried easy root and it said it worked, I downloaded Titanium backup and it said i needed root and busy box. I downloaded busybox and went to the app and it scares me.... talking about ROMS and it will only ATTEMPT to install, ect. I am a newb and those are things I don't know much about....yet although I am learning and have been reading the forums alot. Easy root says I can just click a unroot button but if I install 2.2 can I root again with the button or do I have to just move the file then install 2.2 like the instructions.

no the root for 2.2 has not been released yet so you have o do it in 2.1 then update

Open root explorer (if you have it)...if it opens and works you are still rooted.

Or open anyother root only app and if it works you are rooted.

when i try to paste su to xbin from bin i get 'you cannot paste here because the file system is read only'

nvm. figured it out
