Help Should Newbs update to 2.2?

It always amazes me when someone wants to root or update their phone but have no idea what the root directory is or a boot loop.

I understand that I could be taken as a little snobby but can anyone suggest a basic 101 tutorial that can help these explorers of the new Android world?

Well anyway I thought this forum needed some good fodder for intellectual debate and lambasting.

i do agree. but, those of us that know what we're doing, had to start somewhere. i dont think it is a bad thing to learn how to do it, but i think it is important to search around for information, and not to do anything based on the first thing you read. i would search multiple forums, and read multiple guides, just to see if there is anything in one guide that another missed.

that said, if you feel like you understand what youre doing (and why youre doing it), go ahead and give it a try. but also, try to have an understanding of what needs to be done if something goes wrong. if you have done all this, and you still feel you have no clue as to what you just read, then that is the point to decide to either try and learn more, or pack it in.

i get frustrated when people say things like, "if you dont know, then you shouldnt be doing it." everyone learns this stuff at some point or another.

now, i dont have any links to any great guides right now, but they are certainly out there. i wont yell at you and tell you to "Search," because someone will likely come along with some great links, but they are out there, and they are pretty easy to find right now since it is such a fresh topic.

All things in moderation (aka "baby steps"). Install root if you like, but don't go nuts uninstalling everything in sight. Those are the guys that ran into trouble.

Be a follower. Let more experienced users test the water and post their results.

Participate. Post your results so others can learn from your failures.

Agreed!!! It annoys me when "elitists" are irritated when normal people can't figure something out. You all start somewhere...

I experience this with Surfing...Did you just paddle out on your first day and catch the first 7' wave that rolled through?? No you didn't...you worked your way up to it.

There is a guide that can be written. There are instructions that those of you that KNOW what you are doing can help beginners get a head start. I for one came from WinMo phones and unlocking those. I always helped beginners and didn't bitch and complain. You will be thanked for your services...take that as payment. Be happy knowing that you helped someone. Moving over to Android (my first android phone is the Droid X) I want to root and work with my phone, but there ARE a lot of ways to do it out there...there are a lot of ways to mess up, and one way to fix it. But there isn't a simple, go here and use one of these root programs, then update to 2.2, then go install this program to remove bloatware, etc...

THAT would be helpful, instead of getting 50 new Froyo how do I do this threads popping up...

Well if you look at Trauma's sticky, updating to 2.2 is about as foolproof as possible pretty much drag and drop+press a couple buttons. If moving to root directory and selecting things using the volume buttons and camera buttons during recovery mode is too hard, then yeah just wait for the official OTA. Rooting is different, and has more chances to mess up the phone.

+1 I think a lot boils down to plain old fashion reading. The same people that "want it now" get bored before they even know what it does!

Don't try to fix something that doesn't need fixing. At least until you will be more comfortable doing it....

a lot of people have children who shouldn't.........ultimately it's their phone and everyone will do with it what they want, but should you feel bad or compelled to help a newb who messed up their phone because they didn't research what they were doing or ask questions ahead of time...no.

I just used the gui Root Me tool last night...I installed Titantium backup, made a full app backup, and then froze a couple of bloatware programs.

I am just really worried that when the final 2.2 update comes, it won't actually put them back. I haven't even tried anything exciting yet like wireless tethering. I am not updating to 2.2 yet, let others guinea pig it for me. It's my only phone

It's not that hard, and hopefuly Titanium can help a lot of noobs out. I would just stay away from theming and overclocking if you're new, you could really mess some stuff up. I've seen in a couple of places to not mess with the MyVerizon backup, just stay away.

Knowing that 2.2 was coming soon I did not do anything to my X and the upgrade went flawlessly.

Before updating to 2.2 I thawed all the bloatware with TiBU and the update ran without a hitch. It works perfectly.
Even if when the official OTA comes down the pipe the worst that can happen I think is we won't get the popup informing us it's available. At that time I can bet someone will provide the official .zip and it won't be a problem.

I dont know anything about rooting, but I updated and it worked fine...basic computer knowledge asking with the ability to follow directions should be all you need in order to update...

It really depends on each person's technical level. Someone with no patience to read through instructions completely, or someone without much technical savvy, nope, they should just wait.

But for people with moderate technical knowledge, who can read complete instructions, and are aware of the potential issues, go ahead.

I fall into that category. I'm great when it comes to 3d, installation and troubleshooting on our PCs, and this was just another learning curve.

I couldn't get a 100% instruction set to root and then upgrade to 2.2 when I did it, so I'm 2.2 unrooted right now.

I'm compiling a complete readme to roll back to 2.1, root, an then uypgrade again to 2.2.

There are a few minor issues with 2.2, but far less then with 2.1 I think, and some nice speed improvements, as well as new features.

We still haven't upgraded my wife's DX. Once I'm confident of rooting 2.1, and then upgrading to 2.2 and keep root, I'll upgrade hers.
