There is a thread going on in the Evo forum but it turned into a bunch of Evo and Epic users trying to rip each others' heads off. I want to get a more accurate count of how many people would rather have an Epic and how many would rather have an Evo. Also, please keep the discussion civilized. I'll update this post later comparing the two devices in more detail (specs, software, camera samples, build quality...)

I voted for HTC EVO. The Epic loses a few points because of the physical keyboard. It is not necessary and makes the phone bulkier.

As to the bulkier part -

EPIC 4G - 4.90 x2.54 x0.56 (124 x 65 x 14 mm) @ 5.46 oz (155 g)

EVO 4G - 4.80 x2.60 x0.50 (122 x 66 x 13 mm) @ 6.00 oz (170 g)

If those specs are to be believed, then the weight's within 3 nickels of each other - and I'm not sure there's a dime's worth of difference in the dimensions (in the neighborhood of about a teaspoon and a half in volume).

The Epic is going to sell big to people sick of waiting on Evos or those wanting a physical keyboard.

As to the necessary part - that's a matter of personal preference, of course.

When it came for me to get a new phone, it honestly came down to neither. And it wasn't because I was a on a different carrier because I would've left my carrier. The Evo to me was a bit too wide and heavy/bulky. But the features are nice tho. For the Epic 4G, I simply won't buy a phone with a physical keypad.

But I actually ended up getting the Captivate, Epic's better 2/3's :)

But if I had to choose between the two I would go for the Evo because it doesn't have the physical keyboard. Regardless of the Epic having a better processor and everything.

edit. plus the Epic wasn't out when I got the Captivate :p (or maybe I'm wrong?)

Not necessary for YOU, perhaps, but it is necessary for others. The physical keyboard is the main reason I choose this phone over Evo. Second reason is the super amoled screen. So nice!

Yeah this is kinda true. I mean the touch screen is better in allot of ways, but if it's humid out or you have even the slightest about of oil or dirt on you're fingers it gets on the screen quickly.

For me it was between the iPhone and EVO. EVO's a pretty solid phone, and I don't have any problems with it other than battery life.

But to get in to an all out fight over a damn PHONE... Id have to say those people need to download a life...

Try using the on screen keyboard when your fingernails hit the screen before your fingertip. It's impossible to type accurately. I've tried on Evo, iPhone, etc. I can select wigets and such without too much issue, but typing is a chore! And I text a lot, so that's a big deal to me. Physical keyboard is ABSOLUTELY necessary, for me.

Exactly the way I feel, If I can have the best of both worlds, (touchscreen & Keyboard) and barely have a noticeable difference in thickness, I'll choose the Epic all day.

Honestly I'm not even planning on using the keyboard for typing if I don't have to. Swype and voice to text should take care of that for me, but when it's time to play games, I'll be good to go.
