Froyo Wifi Hot Spot and Tethering on Verizon's Droid

As you've heard, Verizon confirmed they will not support the wifi hotspot nor the tethering features on the original Droid. They claimed it's for technical reasons.

Since everyone on the technical community agrees that it is not true, is there something we can do to catch the attention of Verizon and convince them to enable those features?
A mass email? A petition?

I Installed the 2.2 OTA force at the top of the forum and mine still has the ability to USB Tether.. However I do not see an option for Hotspot

This is one of the features I was really looking forward to having. The Fact that rooted droids can already do this but thats verizons greed for ya. Guess its time to Root my phone.

Yes, PdaNet works fine with 2.2. I've used it. The native USB tether works fine too though and is easier to set up, so I would just use that since it's still included with the official OTA 2.2 update.

To the OP though, no, you're most likely not going to be able to do anything to convince Verizon to release the WiFi hotspot feature for Droid. If you wanted this feature bad enough, it would be infinitely easier and faster to just root your phone and install the WiFi tether app that's in the market right now.

The Droid's chipset doesn't have the ability to setup a wireless AP (aka 'Hotspot') that will allow multiple devices to route thru to the internet. So, in that respect VZW is telling the truth (they flatout lied about the usb tethering, tho). However, it does have the ability to setup an adhoc network to allow 1 device to connect wirelessly (Wireless tether for root).

USB tethering is basically using your phones data plan to provide Internet to a connected computer. Quite nice if your traveling and you have a laptop. Sure, you could just use your phone's browser, but why not take advantage of a real keyboard/mouse when you can?

Hi im new to forum. Got converted when all my dreams fell short with a lie from a company I've been loyal to for years (red) . Minus Tethering, Hotspots.... well no biggie in some respects, but....... 2.2 will be given to us as the droid does, I feel droid can't at the moment..... im not a whiner though I do speak my mind for many droid 1 owners. I joined the forum to have a voice. Dont just say "oh well", there is an app for that, remember "red" took your 2.2 and short changed you. You'll find a way but they had their way! Thanks.

Not quite true.. i have it running up to 2 devices currently (haven't tested more).. but it is still in adhoc mode, that much is true.

I did... got a network connection, but was trapped in Verizon's walled garden. Not that it is any surprise, but obviously it works, and Verizon has a way of detecting the tethering status and blocking access.

To those that gleefully announce to the world that there is pdanet I raise my glass to you! To those that say ill root.... well another salute! My question is both party's come to the same watering hole called forum. Both are interested in "the peoples" phone. Were talking about tether/wi-fi or the absence there of......I want to warn both happy campers including myself that big red has enough money and guns to run us out of Dodge. By announcing. "I" have pdanet or "we" can root you are really saying you do those thing because you have to right? Im sure VZ is working as hard as you to take their promise to you away from you. DROID CAN. Watch out for your bro and sis newbie. With 70,000 people on this forum alone it is the peoples phone.

I tired it yesterday morning after installing the Official Google Froyo release for the Droid. USB tethering worked fine and was able to access web sites on the computers (tested in XP [with driver installed; see help in the tethering menu for the web site for the XP driver] and Vista).

Tested tethering on my Droid with Windows 7. Does not work for me. When checking the network options says that I am connected to a network without internet. With further testing it tries to redirect me to http://dunsp.vzw.com/. Without a doubt Verizon wants money for this feature, however I am wondering if my Win 7 machine is part of the reason this isn't working right away as it is working for other Win XP users.

EDIT: Obviously others have experienced this.

I use Easy Tether Pro. It costs 10 bucks in the marketplace and works just fine on Froyo.

No. Wifi hotspot and wifi tether was not included in the official Google release of Froyo for the Droid. USB tethering is tho. Unlike Verizon's modified version of the open source OS, it does not contain code for authentication for Verizon's Mobile Broadband Connect service (and I believe you must have their VZAccess Manager software installed, from what I've read). So it was all hook up and go.

yes it is free.....as long as you stay under the radar (5 gigs per billing cycle) they wont catch on, ive been tethering for months now, but i always keep my data usage around 5-6 gigs in a billing cycle, unless they accually look closely at your data usage and packet sniff, your fine, i mean vzw has how many millions of smart phones out there on the network, they are more likely to look at someone with 10+ gigs a month data than they are at someone like me.....perfect example, a friend of mine also tethers, not going to go into the details on what he has set up, but he used 40 gigs last billing cycle......long story short, as long as your not downloading torrents or 1 gig files a day, your fine.

im not talking about some app, im talking about the official USB tethering that comes with froyo. how could i get in trouble for something that comes preloaded on the phone?
