I have been reading the 2.2 threads till my eyes are bleeding and just want to be clear on one thing. If do the update.zip with 2.1 rooted, should everything be fine? I understand I may lose root, although it seems some haven't but I really don't care about root right now. Just making sure I wouldn't have to SBF or RSD Lite or put on my BVD's on or get checked for STD's before I try to update...

If you move your su file from bin to xbin (in the system folder, use the Root Explorer app to do this), then you'll get to keep root for 2.2. Worked flawlessly for me yesterday.

Edit: Make sure you move the file, not copy it. I spoke with two others who copied and only had root access for a couple of apps as opposed to complete root.

Thank you my friend. I had seen this but had never seen how to move it or what to move it with..I'm not good at the whole adb thing so this is a great help...Thanks!

download root explorer. it's so worth it to not have to use adb every time you wanna move a file.

edit: oops, i see he already told you to do that. sorry, my eyes are tired. i think i need to take a break from my computer screen and get outside.

Well no one can/will guarantee you won't do something wrong but there are some pretty good step by step guides out there now and if you follow them exactly you should be good.

Also
If you get the bootstrapper and ROM manager you can flash the update that's already rooted. Seems that would be one way to make sure you keep root.

Have fun!

Here is what I ended up doing. I had a clean 2.1 that I had never rooted. I used universalandroot to root and it worked perfectly. Then I moved su from bin to xbin as described above to keep root and it worked fine. I applied the update.zip and went without a hitch. Of course all the apps were not showing up in the market so i did the clean build.prop fix for it with root explorer and it also fixed the market problem...as of right now the battery manager is working as well as playing mp3's and its quick and wonderful...so far :D. I want to thank everyone again that shows us dumb a-holes how to do this..I declare I think I'm bout to cry...:(

After I bricked my phone and had to flash back to 2.1 and reroot and update to 2.2 I restored everything using my backup pro. After I did drocap and wireless tether no longer worked, my other root apps did. All I had to do was uninstall them using titanium backup and reinstall those two and now everything is working fine.
