Screen activation in pocket

Love the Eris so far...minus 1 glitch which is hopefully user error. Has anyone else had a problem with it calling from your pocket? It has happened to me a few times the passed couple of days (just picked up the phone this weekend) where the screen is somehow activated in my pocket, possibly after a missed call or text, which results in "pocket dial". Is there an alternative method to "unlock" the screen so maybe it doesn't happen so easily? This is my first touch screen to maybe there is a trick I don't know about. Thanks in advance.

i have a pretty long criminal record, did VERY illegal things since i was 8 or 9...grow up in the ghetto of ghettos so im far from a nerd...geek...in the full since of the word. but i would NEVER carry this phone in my pocket!
i keep it in a holster at ALL times. most people in the hood do, i guess cause its no protection like a holster.
i mean you have keys in your pocket that can scratch the screen you have change...why would you want to do that?
i know they say nerds keep it on the holster....although, i`ve only read that in forums posted by...nerds! :)

To lock your screen, press the END button on the lower right (it's the one with the red phone on it. The screen will turn off, and it will lock the phone. When you're ready to use the phone again, press the END button to "wake up" the phone, and scroll down the gray bar to get back in. That should help with the unintentional dialing.

I had a similar problem with my droid. Somehow i would hit the power button on top and swipe to unlock while it was in my pocket.

My fixes.
1. Set unlock pattern. Only kinda a fix because it would still wake in my pocket but would not do anything but touch the pattern screen. So i wouldnt call anyone or anything.

2. got a holster. Works fine now.

I hear reports of this but as of yet have not been able to duplicate the issue. I carry mine in my pocket, no screen protector or case, and never once has it unlocked itself.

Easy to duplicate. While the screen is locked, hit your End button. While the lock screen is showing, hit the Menu button. This will unlock the phone.

Things like missed calls or Incoming SMS msgs (if using Handcent) will light up the screen. Pocket dialing start from there!

Anyone know of a way to disable this function? Pattern lock won't work b/c there is still a call button on that screen.

You're right I think its that "menu" activation that does it. Hopefully there's a way to deactivate that. I certainly never use that feature on purpose.

On my phone as long as the screen is turned off (i.e. as long as I have pressed the red on/off button before putting it in my pocket), the phone cannot be activated in any way. No buttons can be pressed except the red on/off button. The Menu button is not active, the green button is not active, no pocket dials are possible.

But once the red on/off button is pressed, the menu button becomes active and can be pressed accidentally, unlocking the phone.

Aha! Hadn't thought about that possibility. So if the red h/w button gets accidentally pressed in my pocket, then the Menu h/w button can get accidentally pressed, too, then the Phone screen button can get pressed accidentally, then one of the contacts that comes up at the top of the screen can get pressed accidentally. Hello! Pocket calling!

I've tried, but I can't find a way to prevent the Menu h/w button from becoming "live" after the red h/w button is pressed. That's what is needed here. That's probably a fix for HTC to make, since I would imagine most people unlock the screen by "swiping", so the Menu button does not need to be live then.

I have also found a solution. Add an extra security lock. Similar to lock 2.0 but built into Android.

Menu -> Settings -> Security -> Require Pattern

This will add an extra layer of lock

Thank you. Although I don't exactly love the extra step when I'm actually trying to unlock the phone, thanks for solving my pocket-dialing dilemma. I do hope a more specific touch-to-unlock system emerges in the next update.

The issue, I think, is that you can slide anywhere on the screen to unlock. I put my phone in my pocket upside-down (the natural position from holding it). I think what's happening is I occasionally nudge the "end" button while my finger's still dragging on the screen as I pull my hand out of the pocket--bingo, unlocked phone, ready to take hilariously inappropriate action without my knowledge. I've had the phone for barely 48 hours and have already made three accidental calls and one incredibly poorly-timed blank text message.

As a recent convert from the iPhone, this is delightfully ironic. My old phone wouldn't make calls when I wanted it to. My new one makes them without telling me.

(Also, as somebody who's only owned his Eris for a couple of days and has already found answers to more than a few befuddling questions on this site, allow me to offer a hearty thank you to everybody in this particular corner of the internets.)
