Song tags not working on Hero player

Hi,

I've recently gone through all my songs and using mp3tag (PC software for tagging music files) I've tagged my songs, ie band name, album, album art work.

I've checked in winamp and itunes and all the information is the same everywhere. All except the Hero phone. When I've transferred all my songs to the SD card most of them show up correctly, with right name, album, art work but around a quarter of them come up under "unknown" album.

Does anyone know why this might be or how I can make the Hero player recognise the artist/album names?

(I'm using HTC Hero 2.73 on Orange with Windows Vista)

Hi,
I've the same problem. All is ok in iTunes or other apps on my PC but in Hero, 3 or 4 albums are tagged as "UnknownAlbum" and "Unknown Artist". On my iPod, all is ok.

Thank you for posting this! I'm using a Samsung Moment on Sprint with Android 1.5 and I was running into the same problem. Most of my collection didn't have readable tags. I'm now using DBPowerAMP to make smaller files for my Moment and I'm starting to use mp3tag to add the ID3v1 tags. You'd think that the music app would be able to read ID3v2.3 or 2.4 tags, but no....

Not all tags are created equal, evidently.

My collection was tagged ages ago using WMP and all details displayed correctly on an N95 and a Sony Walkman. Moved to the Hero and the same problem appeared. I installed Winamp and it showed the same i.e. some tracks listed as artist and/or album "unknown". I spent 30mins straightening them out with Winamp and now the Hero displays them correctly too.

I just got a Samsung Moment a few days ago, and love it. I had the same problem with unrecognized songs/albums/artitis etc. I tried to use iTunes to solve the problem over a few evenings with no success. In the end, I discovered that the problem was with the id3 data that iTunes was writing to my files. I used musicbrainz and it solved the problem. Now nearly all my songs populate with artist/album/title and even the art. When using musicbrainz be sure to insall the cover art plugin. Note, that music brainz is about 99% accurate, but it couldn't tag some of the one-off-song files I have.

Oh, also, be sure to save in id3v2.3. That's what worked for me. I read on another post that v2.4 isn't compatable with the android music player, and the www.id3.org site notes that 2.4 isn't yet widely accepted.

Not sure why so much trouble with tags. All of mine appear properly. I've tagged most of my music collection on my pc using Media Monkey (which also syncs Android phones).

For any album I've downloaded on the device directly, I use Tag (from the Market) which let's you tag and encode album art, which has been constantly getting better with updates sometimes several a week.

I can confirm that ID tags v2.4 are not entirely compatible with Android player. For my self-ripped and self-encoded mp3s it gets most of the name tags right (artist, album, track names), but track numbers are sometimes not honored, so I get issues like a four-track album being played in order 1,4,2,3.

Nowadays I just use a free player MixZing Lite. Although I hate how it looks, it works flawlessly even with v2.4 tags.

Edit: Turns out it wasn't really caused by ID tag version. Looks like default Android player is just plain ********, as it orders tracks alphabetically by track name. I wonder if writing the player code was outsourced to Microsoft.

Edit2: This forum censors word "r3tarded"?
