Help Droid reliability?

What is your experience with the reliability of your Motorola Droid? I

You won't get better on ATT.

A lot of the problems are from some apps that are being installed. I wouldn't discount hardware, etc..... but I'd say a very large percentage is from certain applications that may overwrite certain areas on the phone's system area.

Normally I'm a power user, and I've gone slow in my app installs.

I have a first week build 39/09, and it's been flawless so far!

Mine's been totally reliable. Haven't run into anything like the problems you describe.

Just to put it into perspective... I have a lot of friends that when iphone on release.

They have moved to the droid.

They are saying that there are less problems on the droid than on iphone release day.

I don't have any problems at all. Give the droid (android 2.0) a bit of time, there's some sporadic issues here and there, and most of "forum" posts are gonna be "WTF", not I "heart".

That's a good point. Don't get me wrong, when the phone is working it's awesome. The interface and interconnectivity of txting, email, calendar is all great stuff. I just need to be able to depend on it.

I drove a Honda Civic for years and never, ever had an issue. Just routine oil changes and tire rotations. I want a phone like that.

If you want a honda civic of phones, don't buy a droid. It's a smartphone, like a bmw. IE just buy a phone for calls.

Now that I've said that, I haven't had any issues with mine. Even if it's a bmw, some bmw's will have problems.

Some bmw's (cough iph cough one) still have unresolved bugs in their core functionality, like alarm clocks, quiet calls, and gimp mode!

But if you are having a problem I'd recommend calling Motorola first. Log the problem so they are aware of it.

I have a first week build 39/09, and it's been flawless so far!

39/09 wasn't the first week's build, but it does seem to be the most reliable one and the one that most people got when they bought on launch day. I bought on launch and I got a 38/09. One other user of the 38/09 I've talked to says the virtual landscape keyboard is pretty slow, and I have to agree with him. I'm gonna take mine back sometime before the 30 days and get a new one cause it lags when I try to type at a decent speed. Seems fine other than that though.

Haha, I laugh at your analogy. I bought the Droid opening Day (6th) and had nothing but problems since. Last night, I cancelled and returned my 3rd phone. This is not an isolated incident of crappy phones. The first phone I went easy on apps and put NO music on it...IT FAILED. Screen froze over 7 times, the only way to reboot, pull off the cover, and take out the battery. Second phone, Damaged SD card, which lost all my data on the phone. Again, I had practically nothing on it. Attempt number 3, screen froze, dropped calls, and crappy sounds from the songs I finally put on the stupid thing.

Here's a list of crap about the Droid: No software for uploads/downloads on the comp, constant issues with hardware/software, keyboard is pointless, extra weight and space when the touch worked just fine, no oversight on the apps means problems with downloads and personal information security, terrible sound quality from many sound sources, including Pandora which made it sound like the 3 different cars I tried it in all had blown speakers, the face off/on feature caused me to dial and drop calls when my ear touched the face.

This phone had more negatives than positives, and it won't last the test of time unless they do a rehall of the hardware/software and get their own version of itunes.

DONT BUY THE DROID! DROID DOESN'T!

Yesterday, I went into the Verizon store to buy a Droid, but while I was waiting for a service rep I played with a live display Droid and had really bad experiences quite comparable to those in this thread. I left the store without buying a Droid but in view of all the rave reviews online, I decided that the Verizon display Droid must have been a defective fluke. So I started to buy one online today, but then thought, no, I think I'm going to Google Droid reliability, and found this thread. Whew! What a close call!

WOW WOW hold it. Not all Droid users are having this issues. I have never not once had my device freeze,reboot or even drop calls. I'm sure they may be some bad ones out there but dont let this stop you for trying it out. The worst case would be to return it but at least you will have hands on trial.

I feel like I have already had a hands on trial - for 15 minutes at Best Buy and another 15 minutes in the Verizon store. Once I buy the phone, it's a royal pain to return it. The Verizon store and Best Buy are 90 miles from here. I don't want to buy the phone unless the chances are reasonably good that I will get a good one. I suppose I should mention that the guy behind me in line at the Verizon store had a Droid -that he bought the day before- die after 4 hours of use. I am looking at experience: the guy behind me, my own, the multiple people in this thread, and multiple people at other internet sites. To me, there seems to be a serious quality control issue with the Droid production; and in view of the comments above, it may be related to particular production runs. I did contact Lou Macadam's office (Verizon executive) about this, and they say there is no problem. I am not sure what to think - but I would like to see the real statistics for Droid return rates at Verizon stores, compared to other new release phones.

Like I posted last time, many don't suffer from this issues but it seems that your focusing only on the bad. I'm not saying this doesn't happen to others but that's how it works on cell phone's. Even my co-worker has one and has not suffer none of this issues. Quality now a days seems to drop when it comes to cells. You can check out phonescoop.com and see more reviews plus verizonwireless website had them too. As for driving that far I really don't get it cause you can just call customer service and have it delivered and if you don't like it with in 30 days you can return it the way you got it. As for the guy behind you, did you actually waited and see what really caused the issue? I personally seen issues like this at verizon were the customer just did not know how use their phone and or screw up them selfs.

I'm on my second droid. The first one was reliable for about two days, then progressively got worse. I could only use the speaker phone with it. I have long dark hair and that cursed proximity sensor can't deal with humans that have hair I guess. Both phones locked up at the worst time. The first one usually during a phone call and I would have to hard reboot it (battery out). The second one has only done that once but the touch screen is my biggest complaint. The touch screen is so fickle it makes the phone so user unfriendly that it may or may not respond.
I want a smart phone, but I want a smart phone that can RELIABLE enough to make phone calls. It should do so with great ease. Out of the box I should be able to push one button and answer a call. It should not be so difficult. It should be a phone first, and everything else second. Call me a throw back purist, but when your smart phone is your only phone and you live alone and... OK you get the picture sometimes you need to call somebody. I've had to call 911, I've had to call people for help, I worry that I will not have time to **** around with a phone that is unreliable next time I need an ambulance. I'm tempted to buy an emergency call 911 phone to back up my phone. Should I need to do this with a SMART PHONE? Should my smart phone be so difficult to use that I can't call someone in an emergency.
I do love my technology and widgets. I love having the navigation features, browser, Facebook and gmail at my fingertips wherever I go. It's just the phone hiccups and flakes out just enough that I question its capabilities.

Get screen suite from the market. Problem solved. Works great for me and I have never had a problem with my hair or cheek causing me to lose calls since installing it.

I have had my Droid since February. I have dropped it, rooted it, bricked it, dripped water on it, installed and then uninstalled apps at lighting speed, reverted to stock, rooted it again, flashed a couple custom ROM's and still the thing works flawlessly. I have not had a single problem with it other than the one single time that it froze. It's an awesome phone. Every time I hear someone say iPhone it makes my a** hurt, but then I glace at my Droid and I smile.

Shortly after posting my orignal post I got Tedd's tools. It still freezes up, reboots, and all the assorted errors but at least I can make phone calls. My error rate on phone calls is down about 75% still sucks when the phone freezes up on calls. But so much better than before.
