I was hesitant to root my phone, but the prospect of not getting 2.2 pushed me over the edge. In the last few weeks I've rooted, and run Fresh 2.3.3, which was great, and DamageControl which just didn't wow me, but I've been loving Cyanogen's RC1. As of last night I've tried the RC and a few of the dailies.

RIght now, I'm on RC1, with decadence's kernal (#8), gomorrah's blackmod theme with his circle-battery tweak. I've played with the Collin's battery tweak and had mixed results....in any event, if you're not thrilled with your hero and are on the fence, just root---its way easier than you'd think and makes the phone that much better

Agree with most of what you say.

My only word of advice to others reading the thread is to wait until YOU PERSONALLY are ready.

+1 on this. I waited 9 months before rooting my Hero. Didn't need it at first and was skeered later. I finally had done enough research that I felt comfortable and rooting went without a hitch. I am happy with stock 2.1 so I just got rid of sprints apps I didn't want on my phone. I also added some apps I could only use if rooted and am very happy with the end result. I thought the phone was fast before but I must have been kidding myself, I have a had good jump in performance. Looking at different ROMs but going to wait till I am comfortable with that as well.

It's better to do the homework first before making threads like, "I want to put Froyo on my phone, what is Froyo, what is rooting, where can I get everything I need, and how do I turn my phone on thanks", which seem to pop up everywhere, ha.

I couldn't agree more. I don't post often, but I've had my hero from release day and have been lurking on this forum, xda, and cyanogen's for a while and know what the risks are and how to not brick my phone. Its amazing how few people seem to do their homework before posting or before putting a random piece of software on their phone.

I used my phone in it's stock configuration for about 2 months before I rooted it and I was ready to drive over it with my truck. Worst phone I ever had to that point. Once I rooted it I gotta say I'm much happier with it now. I started out with Fresh 2.1.2 and I liked it so I tried Fresh 2.3.3 and I was happy at first but then the phone became extremely laggy so I wiped that and flashed Darchdroid 2.8, added the Collin battery tweak and so far i'm loving it. It's quick and my battery is lasting way longer than in the past. This ones a keeper but I'm gonna give RC1 a shot soon and see how I like it.

At first I was afraid to root my phone because it all seemed too complicated. After doing a lot of reading I finally rooted, but only used it to remove some of the sprint apps because I was still afraid of custom roms. Again, after doing more reading I installed ZenEXP and now I'm upset that I didn't do it sooner. It was very simple if you follow directions. Phone is much faster now! It used to take me up to 45 seconds to even make a call. No lag at all now.
