SMS through Google Talk??

Is there a way to send SMS through google talk like in my regular Gmail account.

only if you long press the icon of the person and select your messaging app.. never seen any other way.

have you tried Google Voice, you can SMS with that.

also, why would you want to SMS when Talk is free & as instant and SMS can use up your text messages?

what does settings > compose do in the Voice Droid app?

On the web browser version, you can text.

There is also a Mac widget that sits in yoru widgets and you can place calls (it then calls your phone) or send text's

The SMS and VMs both show in the same inbox in Google Voice. I use it to send SMS all the time.

To send an SMS to an individual, Open Google Voice --> Menu Key --> Compose --> start typing person's name --> - you're ow composing an SMS.

Of course, I think there are some related setting you'll want to check out in your Voice account first before you start. In particular, if you want to not have to pay for SMS, then you'll want to disable SMS forwarding to your cell phone, and you need your cell phone number tied to your GV account.

I dont think I have ever seen an update to the Droids Voice app.

anyway, the setting I mention above, compose, is there. BUT, you do need a Google Voice account of course.... do you even have one? IF you do, you need to go to their Google Voice web site and set it all up. If you do not, you need to try to request an invite and there are invite threads on here. I bet you do not which is why you do not see that option.

Quite a few of my contacts don't use Google Talk. Doesn't do much good to communicate on a channel that they don't use.

In my specific case, SMS is unlimited anyway since I use GV. Further, the other half uses SMS heavily (and won't use GV) so we have unlimited SMS as well.

The real question is why would you assume that everyone's situation and preferences are identical to yours?

Google Talk and Google Voice are 2 different things and they are both getting mentions here so it is getting kind of confusing.

If you use GV to SMS someone who does not have/use GV, they can get it and they can respond and it comes to your GV. So "the other half uses SMS heavily (and won't use GV) so we have unlimited SMS as well." does not matter really. You can still use GV and they can use whatever they want to SMS you.

As for GT.. the person does not have to have GT to use it with you. But they must have gMail as the built in chat function in gMail connects to Talk. So the Talk app is great for other Droid users with Talk, but is not totally required as you can use Talk and they can use the gMail chat function real time and waste no SMS (if you do not have unlimited SMS and if they are near their gMail and use it).

Basically you assumed that he doesn't need to send SMS via google talk because you don't need to do it.

I can think of another situation when this is needed. I need to send an sms on my prepaid phone but I am out of credit. So I need to send via google talk. Is that too far fetched? I had this problem.

It is frustrating when people answer with "why do you need so and so when so and so is much better".
