Root Is Modaco Worth the effort?

Hey people,

I got my Hero last week and so far its working well. I currently have the latest version of the HTC official rom.

I have been thinking about upgrading to the latest Modaco Custom Rom but can someone tell me if it is worth the effort? I heard that MCR is MUCH MUCH quicker but since I have the latest version of the HTC rom I don't know if it is going to be quicker than that??

Also,is it true that with MCR I can install and run apps directly from the SD card? That would be super useful since Hero has such a small internal memory.

Lastly, can anyone tell me what the latest version of the MCR is? I am so confused about this because there seems to be information everywhere but not in the same place.

Any explanation and advise would be great!

Thanks

Welcome aboard!

I have been thinking about upgrading to the latest Modaco Custom Rom but can someone tell me if it is worth the effort?

That's the big question. My own answer is, "yes IF you will make use of its features and are confident doing the various update steps, otherwise no". It's not a one-click-job-done procedure, no matter what the tutorials say.

I heard that MCR is MUCH MUCH quicker but since I have the latest version of the HTC rom I don't know if it is going to be quicker than that??

There's actually not that marked a difference over the Orange 2.73.xxx.x release, which is my only personal experience. The real gains are in what you can do with it.

Small when compared to what? ;) You can fit an awful lot of apps into the Hero's storage memory... running from SD card is fine and dandy but can introduce a performance hit. You'll also have to to repartition your card.

Lastly, can anyone tell me what the latest version of the MCR is?

Current version is 2.9. The best place to go for info is the home of MCR.

I dont feel the need to root my Hero, its plenty fast enough and I have many widgets and lots and lots of apps.

Will installing apps to the SD card actually be useful to you? Like I said I have more apps than the normal person would ever need and I still have plenty of memory (although last night I did have a nightmare that my phone ran out of space, think that was the cheese though). So to be honest there isn't really an actual limitation there, just a theoretical one.

Also rooting your phone will invalidate your warranty, important for some.

But to add balance many people have rooted and been more the happier for it, some have rooted then come back to official..

Thats the view of a non-rooter ;)

i appreciate ur view. i am also a non rooter but memory problem is reallu big what htc were thinking with 512 rom & when we check in sd card & phone storage it shows 112mb memory free. what is actual status of phone memory.
i came to know that other android phone that is samsung i7500 / galaxy is having 8gigs of internal memory.
i regret now my decision for this htc phone.

You have to keep in mind that internal flash memory is far more expensive than SD memory. That 8gigs of internal memory in the Galaxy adds an additional $100 or so to the cost of the phone, and what's the point when you can get an 8gig microSD card for $15.

It makes perfect sense to allow the consumer to deside the amount of storage they need. Personally, I want every bit of the money I spend on a phone to go toward the performance; screw internal storage space when there's an expandable microSD slot.

Not to mention, Google is working on an official Apps2SD solution to include with a future update.
