Root Root on Leak V3?

Greetings,

Totally confused about if I can Root or Not, If it will cure my problems (unresponsiveness, Freeze up's and the annoying self starting useless apps - Amazon MP3, my uploads, Footprints etc.).And of course, How to do it.

I Progressed through all 3 leaks on My ERIS and now (just last week) have the OTA update as well.

I know this has been talked about B4 but I can't seem to find the correct thread. Also, I can't get a simple definitive answer, that doesn't preface something Like, Heres a Link go read this and the 20 other links it references as well.

Not that I have a problem reading all the info, it's just that everyday the answers change or someone offers a "better mousetrap" or just confuses the issue with opinions instead of facts.

If there is anybody who can simply tell me if on leak 3 and the recent update, I can Root, How to "simply" do it. That one click root thread seems simple enough! And can give me the name and link of a ROM that will get rid of the Crap that runs in the background but wont cripple or disable the phones main functions such as Phone, GPS Email and the modified FLASH we have had since day one that for me at least, Works. I would be forever indebted

One other thing I would like to change is the phone dialer, I would love Moto Droid one, That just puts a large keypad on the screen, with tabs for contacts, recent etc. Instead of the horrible 1/2 screen one we have. that when you try swiping through the contacts it always dials them!

Thanks in advance

I think EasyRoot is what you're looking for. The .apk can be found floating around here. Actually, I need to grab that too.

You just want the dialer to be like the Droid's? I would just suggest getting a Vanilla ROM so that you lose Sense and have everything "like the Droid." Vanilla is what the Droid, Nexus One, G1, etc. run and it runs much smoother than with Sense. Getting the Froyo ROM, probably Kaos', would do you best. I think that's the best one for the Eris and was what I used when I still had mine.

As for removing the crap software no one uses, some ROMs may already have it gone. If not, there is a list of apps that you can safely remove without screwing the phone over. Then, there is also the commands and the steps to go about doing that. I wouldn't suggest removing apps that are not listed on the list, as it could really bone you and leave you with a non-functioning phone.

Thanks,
Even though I appreciate your response, It kind of did exactly what I was hoping it wouldn't. Which is, Send me to a link with a "Try This" kind of answer.

I read that thread, twice. And right from the get go confusion!
Example - Prerequisites - ( Download gscript.zip (MD5 92796a8c6e61e8f1ee36e315c0acae7d )
Then, one praragraph later is this, - (3 - Did you download the "gscript.zip" file (link above) using the phone's browser?)

Doesn't see, like a big deal, but if they wanted you to use the phone to download the file, I would think it would have mentioned that in the pre-req section. Again, it's not a big deal but just adds to the confusion.

I do appreciate the time you took to answer, but I really need something more definitive, especially in the ROM area, which is what totally confuses me

Thanks again,

P.S. Another confusion is 2.1 vs 2.2 I don't need tethering, but I would be interested in 2.2 of there is a ROM that would let me get rid of the crap, works and Most importantly, speeds up the phone as they claim it does, and extends the horrible Battery life

Thanks Again

If there is anybody who can simply tell me if on leak 3 and the recent update, I can Root,

Yes.

How to "simply" do it. That one click root thread seems simple enough!

Use the One Click method to root. (Make a donation, too.)
Make sure to make a Nandroid backup before you apply your ROM. There are simple instructions with pictures on how to do that in the 4th post of the "Dummies" thread.

And can give me the name and link of a ROM that will get rid of the Crap that runs in the background but wont cripple or disable the phones main functions such as Phone, GPS Email and the modified FLASH we have had since day one that for me at least, Works. I would be forever indebted

PS And post root-related topics in the "All Things Root" sub-forum, not here.

Wheres the list, Where can I get Easy root? I saw an easyroot app in app market and all it did was send an email to somebody with my system info, hopefully just that!

Is it the same as the new one click root thread? or the Universal Eris Root for Dummies thread?

Thanks for the info and thanks for another "Try this, Check that" answer :)

Rooting can be very confusing. There is a lot of information available and a lot to digest. If you have not, I suggest that you read most of the stickys in this part of the forum. The guides where written to be pretty universal tutorials for anyone to use. If you are having trouble with the terminology that is used in some of the guides then you may just want to look up or ask about those specific phrases. In the end, you have to be comfortable with what you are doing and if you aren't then you may want to wait on rooting.

this is what i used on v3 leak

1. Download Android SDK from here:Android SDK | Android Developers Follow the instructions (1-11) that were written by GrdLock in order to properly install the SDK package in Windows. Click the link and scroll down to A. Pre-requisite: Android SDK: http://androidforums.com/all-things-root-eris/53963-guide-stock-1-5-latest-root-2-1-a.html

2. Download and Install HTC Sync from here: http://www.htc.com/us/support/droid-eris-verizon/downloads/

3. Download hack-v4.zip from here: Multiupload.com - upload your files to multiple file hosting sites!

4. Unzip the hack-v4.zip is into the tools folder of the already installed android sdk folder. The tools folder can be found at /where ever you put the sdk folder/android-sdk-windows/tools.

5. Download a custom ROM from this forum or one of the other popular Android forums (see the link below). Do not upzip the ROM file. Instead, place the .zip file on the root of the SD Card (ie. Not in a folder). To do this, plug your phone into the computer, pull down the notification bar at the top of the screen on your phone, and tap the USB connection notification, then tap Mount as Disk Drive. Copy the .zip onto the phone.
LIST OF ROMS: Known Droid Eris Roms, Patches and Hacks - UPDATED 05-11-2010 - xda-developers (I hope to be able to update this soon).

6. To open a command window in the tools directory:
[VISTA and WIN7] Navigate to your Android-sdk-Windows folder and open the Tools folder. Find a blank spot in the window and hold down the shift key + right mouse click. Choose the option, “Open Command Window Here.”
[XP] Click Start>Run and type "cmd". This will bring up a command window and from there type " cd C:\android-sdk-windows\tools "

7. On your phone go in to Applications->Development->USB Debugging and make sure it is checked. Plug your phone into your computer and select “Charge Only” (not Disk Drive mode).

8. To test if your ADB is working type “adb devices ” and hit enter . If you get an alphanumeric code that starts with HTXXXXXXXXXX and says device then you are all set.

9. With your phone still plugged in type “runindos.bat” (at the end of the string in the command window on your PC) and hit Enter
Your phone will reboot, sit a while, and then reboot again into Amon’s recovery.

10. In Recovery, select “Backup/Restore” > and NAND Backup. Let it load, it takes a minute or two, then return back to main menu.

11. Select “Wipe” > choose Wipe data/factory reset. Return to menu and select “Flash zip from sdcard” > find your .zip file that you downloaded (the ROM). It should have the name of the ROM somewhere in the zip name. Let it do its thing, then select reboot option.

12. Congrats, you have successfully rooted your phone!
--Thanks to v941726. Just needed to clean up some of his steps to be more readable by beginners. Much of what Surgeon0214 wrote could be copied and pasted with a few words changed into Windows language.

FLASHING CUSTOM ROM's (Once Root is gained) -- Thanks Alprazolam
In order to flash a new ROM after obtaining root you simply:
1. Find and download the ROM that you want to use.

2. Mount your PC and copy the .zip file over to your SD card like you did for root.

3. Turn off your phone and power it back up while holding down the up volume key.

4. After booting into Recovery, go to Wipe and wipe factory data along with Dalvik Cache.

5. Back out of the Wipe menu and go to Install from SD. Your ROM will be there. Hit install and it will put the new ROM that you want, on your phone.

6. Reboot and you will see a boot animation screen for several minutes before it loads your new ROM.

7. Repeat this procedure with a Nand Backup each time you get a new ROM set up.

Preface, This is not a free app, its a try before you buy app. If this app works for you, and you are happy with it. You are required to donate a meal to a homeless youth, or any amount of money to a youth outreach type program.

This is a TeamAndIRC production. The source code is available on request, if good reason exists.

I got bored and whipped this up tonight with ECLIPS3. This will root your Droid Eris running 2.1 with 1 click.
This does NOT erase anything off your phone. You can keep you data/apps with this root!

If something doesn't work, don't freak just contact me. Tested working on latest RUU.

Step 1) download and install this apk
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/8699733/erisone010.apk - VERSION 0.1.0

Step 2) Run, read disclaimer, press button

Step 3) Reboot, once rebooted your phone should have Amon's recovery. Yay.

Step 4) Use the recovery to flash rootme.zip that is now on your SDCard, or the custom rom of your choice.

Step 5) Go into settings, and turn usb debugging on. After you have root, please uninstall this app.

Just that easy.

Please come chat with use at http://chat.andirc.net or irc.andirc.net #droideris if you have a separate IRC client.

roms i would use kaosfroyo-forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=685594

Try this thread: Universal Eris Root for Dummies. I had the second and third leaks and searched and searched for a way to root. This did it for me in about 10 minutes of actual work.

Good luck!
I did the above link with my leaked V3. I read it through about 4 or 5 times BEFORE starting and then was still kinda nervous about actually rooting my phone. It takes longer to read it than it actually takes to do it. It's very simple and I'm so much more happy with my phone. ZERO lag time and I'm running PlainJaneT2 rom.

You said that with so much more patience than what I am feeling after reading his posts.

So, you can do all that, which will make you READ things, and see LOTS of DIFFERENT ways of doing things, and ADVICE on what works for some people but didn't work for other people, and MORE ADVICE on how to troubleshoot things after things don't work out.
But I get the feeling that that is going to be more than you want to deal with.
So, send me your phone, enclose $200 cash, and I will do the difficult work of rooting your phone and putting a wonderfully operational and crap free ROM on it for you.

PS. I am not being in the least bit sarcastic.

Checks in the mail Mr. Know it All, Next time you have a thought - Let it Go...

Anyway to the person who responded to my original question and NOT what he or she Thought I wrote, thanks. I did the one click root. All was good, then I flashed Kaos Froyo 3.0 and the phone is worse then before. Flash doesnt work, it did with stock eris on certain sites, Google Contacts wont sync, Lots of Crap running in the background, cant unistal ADW launcher which is crap compared to Launcher pro, Accu weather and weatherbug widgets disapear and cant be reloaded After rebooting. Stuck with the CPU intensive Gallery which slows to a crawl when opening a folder with more then 10 photos in it.

This is just what I discovered in first 30 Mins and it doesn't look like its going to get any better.

In my opinion Froyo, as it is in this ROM is much slower and has just as much bloat as I had before rooting. If there is a way to remedy these problems, I am all ears. If somebody who feels like responding with something other then a "go read this link type" response and knows a ROM that doesn't cause a slow phone to become as slow if not slower. Please Do.

I would prefer 2.2 If there is a way to make it and the eris more responsive. but it is not essential.

What I need is a working phone and contact book, Flash, working GPS and Google Maps preferably no home launcher unless it is launcher pro, No messaging, tweeter or any other kid stuff running by default and something where agenda, weather and other widgets will work and not need to be reinstalled each time the phone is rebooted

Thanks again, to all who replied with answers, not lectures

Did you do a wipe back to factory defaults. U HAVE TO DO THAT. Koas is a very good rom. He doesnt have that many problems.

Before I installed it I did that nand? backup then a wipe. Is this what you mean?

I did what was posted here "Once you Root the phone and boot into recovery mode, go to backup/nand backup. This will do a back up of your phone, settings, apps, exactly how they are right now.

After that you go into wipe and perform a wipe/factory and wipe/dev. This deletes all of the settings from your phone so that you can flash the new rom unto a clean phone. You MUST do this.
" Found on - http://androidforums.com/htc-droid-eris/154842-okay-how-impact-does-root-have-eris-lag-really.html by user lagos

Kaosfroyo 3.0? or version 30?

Well, i'm not certain but, I don't believe there is a version 30, which is why I typed 3.0. If I am wrong about this, let me know. Either way, would it matter?

The few google threads where people typed 30 instead of 3.0 seem to have been understood.

3.0 was the top one in the list on the kaosfroyo ROM thread So I kind of doubt it, but I don't claim to know everything.

Assuming there is a version "30" and I, as I said, used "3.0" would "30" fix the problems? Or, are you just throwing something out there just for the sake of it?

Please advise

Kaos is on version 30. i know you hate links, but see for yourself:
[ROM]KaosFroyo V30 [08/18] [FROYO] - xda-developers
v30 is pretty good and doesnt really lag much once you install launcher pro. battery life isnt the greatest, but once you install setcpu and add some profiles you should see some results. i went almost 2 days with HEAVY phone call usage, moderate market and app install, light texting, and setting tweaks.

the reason i asked if it was 30 or 3.0 was because my first thought was that maybe you arent on KaosFroyo. maybe it's a different rom altogether?
