Official: Galaxy S does have Gorilla glass

I saw this report earlier today and was confused whether we already have it or not.
Because when looking at the dell streak torture video and then the Galaxy durability test video I don’t think we have it. Otherwise how can it shatter from a simple fall when it can withstand hard stabbing from a pen like that ?

Maybe this statement is intended for future releases

i guess the current versions may have gorilla glass as well (hopefully?).. strong does not necessarily mean it has to be hard.. and i think it is more resistant to scratches and not falls.. and call me paranoid but i would still install a screen protector and not take a chance even if it is confirmed that it is gorilla glass!

btw the guy was going wild in the Dell streak video!! he seemed to be removing all his frustrations on it! ;)

My Galaxy S developed a light scratch from an unknown source. It never shares a pocket with keys or change so whatever scratched it certainly wasn't substantial. I seriously doubt that current/already shipped Galaxy S handsets have this Gorilla Glass. I'll be really pissed off if some handsets have it and mine doesn't.

There's no need to speculate whether the SGS has Gorilla glass or not just because some have gotten scratches since Gorilla glass isn't entirely scratch proof, it's just very good. This kind of glass works very well against larger objects but can still be scratched by really small items, like tiny metal shards in your pocket that has fallen off keys etc and that won't go away in the washer. You won't get that kind of shards used in scratch tests either.

I never put metal objects (keys, coins etc) in any other pockets than my right front pocket because I know that this is a risk. I don't have any scratches on my SGS and I've had it since the initial release in Europe.

The SGS has Gorilla glass, it's pointless to try to argue anything else when the manufacturer officially states that it does. It's obvious that they would point out if some SGS's didn't have it as otherwise their product would lose credibility if some had worse glass.

It's a matter of preference but I would rather recommend a wallet/bag to put it in when you're on the run. Screen protectors never feel as good as the original glass, plus that they make the phone's surface look worse.

If I were Samsung and had gorilla glass in my number one phone, i would advertise this. Can anyone point to an instance of Samsung advertising this or confirming this? Samsung support here in Germany has confirmed that the Galaxy S does NOT have gorilla glass.

Can anyone find a confirmation from Samsung??? I would love to see it...

Galaxy S does have the Gorilla glass and it is scratch-resistant.
Unless you make the surface out of diamond, you cannot have a scratch-proof glass. It is, however, a very strong and will not scratch by normal contacts with the keys and coins in the pocket easily. Super AMOLED is so bright that even if you get some minor scratches by sharp objects, you won't notice much when the screen is on. Having said that, I am using the screen protector that came free with my extra batteries just to keep my screen clean a little longer...and why not since it's free! :)

I can guarantee you that this Gorilla glass on Galaxy S is much more scratch-resistant than any iPhone out there. The battery life is short as you say, but nothing out of ordinary when compared to many other smart phones out there. You can easily get a spare battery and remedy the situation. You can't do that with the iPhones. I hope you find out how to optimize your phones and have better experience like so many happy Galaxy S users out there....now numbering close to 8 millions! ^^

Singsong does not know what he/she is talking about.
Apparently the Galaxy S' DO NOT HAVE TRUE GORILLA GLASS.
I just got back from my local T-Mobile store and all the reps said the Samsung T959 Vibrant Galaxy S- they sold last year does not have the same scratch resistant glass screens as the Iphones. He proved it by comparing it to the HTC HD7 which has true Gorilla Glass. The Vibrant's screen is more plastic than glass. I'm waiting for an official confirmation from Samsung based on my serial number. I will post when I find out.
These screens should not be getting scratched by coins, keys, lint in pockets.
My Iphone never did. Something is sketchy about these screens.
