Custom Ringtones/Text Sounds?

Hi there. Just making the move to the Eris after using the iPhone for two years. I've taken great joy from making custom ringtones and "new text message" sounds in iTunes etc.

Will I still be able to do this with the Eris? If so, how?

You can convert and MP3 with the app "RingDroid" to a ringtone, alarm, notification or UI sound

I have RingDroid and I am looking forward to using it. However, I don't know how to get the MP3s on to my phone. I've synced with my PC, the SD card has been mounted, but I don't know where to put the MP3 files so I can use them.

Sorry for the stupid question. I've never owned a smart phone before so this is all very new.

All you do is actually make a folder titled 'Music' and copy/paste the files you want into it. Mine had no problem finding the files for the music app and editing out a nice guitar solo for my ringtone in Ringdroid.

Does it matter where you make the file? Or can I put that file anywhere I want? I'll try putting the file wherever I want and I'll see what happens. Thanks for the reply!

I just put in a music folder and Ringdroid found everything I put in it. Thanks for all the help!

Glad that works. Additionally you can make folders for artists inside the music folder and inside those you can make further folders for individual albums. Droid recognizes them usually just fine. Though I still hope someday they can integrate iTunes for syncing with this OS (not bloody likely!)

There is probably a better way to specifically setup SMS tones but the closest I've found is to create the soundfile in Ringdroid and when you're done it asks what you would like to assign it as, if any, and just tap notifications. It will do this for all notifications such as facebook updates, email and SMS but I hope that helps.

i've played around with the eris/ringdroid, and as far as i've found out, it looks like you can only have 1 custom ringtone/sound for all txt messages received, period. i haven't found a way where you can have a different custom ringtone for each txt message from different people.

Yes I just want the one custom ringtone for all text messages. What's the best way to do that besides using ringdroid. In the meantime I will try ringdroid.

Its very easy to do with ringdroid.

I am also a first time smart phone owner and i have the HTC eris Droid. So far i really like the phone but i cant seam to get the custom ring tones to work correctly.

I got the ringdroid and installed it and set one of the custom ones that i had as the default notification but when i receive a text msg it is still the standard one that originally came on the phone.

even when i check in the settings under sound and display it even says that the custom one that i made is the default one but it doesn't play for any msg that i receive.

Has anyone else had this problem or am i doing something wrong?

You have to make 2 directories on your SD Card. One called ringtones and the other called notifications. Then you can mount your phone to your computer, and copy the files you from your computer to the SD Card. And then you should be able to select the files you want under the settings.

I have the droid eris also. I just got it after using the iPhone for 2 1/2 years. Use ringdroid. Fantastic app, terrible phone though.

I'm getting the samsung omnia II on Wednesday. The eris is too sluggish and the battery sucks too much compared to the iPhone and it is just too much of a downgrade for me to keep it.

when you drop an .mp3 .wav or .ogg file into these directories they show up in the respective lists for assigning notification sounds.

Creating these directories ALSO has the added benefit of the music app for android being "blind" to what's in those folders. So you don't end up with alarms and ringtones playing on accident while you're trying to listen to music


Then you don't have to download any special software on your phone.

I tried it with a folder called ringtones, but my Eris did not recognize the folder or the mp3's in it (the droid & imagio did though). I made a folder in my music folder called ringtones and selected the ringtone from the drop down list. The only problem with that is that you have to scroll through all of your music you loaded on the SD Card. Not happy with that result, i go on to try using ringdroid (which is real easy to use), but find the ringtones i've just made are not loud enough. I go looking for the new ringtones i've just made (so i can get rid of them), and find them in a new folder called media which was created by ringdroid, the path to the created ringtones on the SD Card is media>audio>ringtones. I've since placed all my custom ringtones in said folder, now my custom ringtones show up with the htc/android ringtones.

No reason to get fancy.

use Double Twist (should have anyway) to put mp3's onto your Eris.

Then use RingDroid (you should also just have anyway) to convert it to a notifcation.

If you're using Handcent SMS, it allows you to set a custom notifcation.

Every time I get a text message, I am now greeted with,

"It's a trap!"

I put about 10 songs (mp3's) in a folder on my desktop, connected phone, mounted SD card. Opened my computer to show SD card and dragged the music folder, on my desktop to the SD card and dropped. Disconnected phone, went to music icon and there they were !

Didn't need double twist, nor any other app !
Opened ringdroid and there were all my songs and ringtones, ready to edit to my liking !

I'd been going through menu/settings/sound & display/notification sound to try and change my text message sound, when you should be going to the messages screen then menu/all messages(depending where you left off prior) /settings/select sound.

I was trying to do the same thing you were I think and could never figure it out. Hope this helps.

Inside of your SMS program (at least in Handcent) you can set an individual notifcation.

The way my phone is set up;

Default Ringtone: Dissapear - Motion City Soundtrack
Default Notification (e-mails, ect) - R2D2 Beeping
SMS Receive - "It's a trap!"



Ringdroid is your friend. It only likes MP3's though, and nothing that's ACC apparently.

I tried making the folders on my SD card for notifications and ringtones, but ringdroid didn't recognize some of them. Then everytime I try to do anything with ringdroid like editing a song to make a ringtone, a window comes up that says "Ringdroid has quit unexpectedly" and I have to force close it. Any advice?
This is really irritating me..
