Nowhere in the instructions does it tell you to install "gscript.zip" using Amon_RA.

You should be able to install any ROM you like, PlainJaneT2 is not required; you do need to do a "Wipe data/factory reset" immediately prior to flashing the ROM from the SD card (no matter what ROM you choose).

If you are still receiving "Verification" errors, there is a 99.99% chance that you are corrupting your ROM .zip files - either because you are interrupting the download, or you are improperly disconnecting the mount of the SD card to the PC (if you are transferring the file by copying across the USB cable).

Even though you did a "Wipe", your phone OS is still present, and will boot. The boot will be slower than normal, and you will have to re-enter your Gmail account/password - but your phone is still in a working state.

Moreover, if you followed the (emphatic) instructions, you should also have a Nandroid backup sitting right there on your SD card that you can restore to get your phone back exactly as it was.

As I mentioned before, you need to check that you are not corrupting the ROM files when you are downloading them or copying them.

You absolutely can do this with the phone charging. When the Amon_RA recovery is running, the LED light will not light up, but it WILL be charging if you have the USB cable plugged in to either the A/C charger or a PC (which is turned on, obviously).

In fact, I highly recommend that - you should not be flashing ROMs with a discharged phone.

Here's something to try.

Download the ROM file for xtrSENSE 4.0.6.1. The direct link to the download file is right here.

I have installed it on my Eris, I know that it works, and it would be a good starter ROM for you. Moreover, I can tell you its' exact size and MD5 signature:

So, there you go. Download that file to your SD card. Before you do anything else, check to see that it is

108,817,038 bytes

in size exactly - not even one byte more nor one byte less.

Then do a "Wipe data/factory reset", followed by a flashing of the file

xtrSENSE4.0.6.1.zip

Good thing you didn't give up. Welcome to root.

There is no reason for you to immediately change to anything else - xtrSENSE 4.0.6.1 is a damn good, fast, smooth, and stable ROM. Try it out and get it configured to your liking for a couple days. And make some more Nandroid backups of it along the way.

Please, Please, PLEASE tell me you made a Nandroid backup of your pre-existing ROM before you flashed anything.

It's not really a disaster if you didn't, but the instruction to do so are there for a reason: so you can recover gracefully from disasters, or go back to a prior ROM if you have trouble with a new one. The sequence you perform for installing a new ROM is always the same:

0) Download the new ROM and verify that it is not corrupted after you move it to the root of your SD card
1) Charge your phone to 100%
2) Shut down, and boot into Amon_RA recovery
3) MAKE A NANDROID BACKUP OF YOUR CURRENT ROM
4) Wipe data/factory reset
5) Flash the new ROM from the SD Card
6) Reboot and Configure the new ROM

First I would like to thank EU1 (and the many other developers) for making my Root possible. I followed your instructions for the root to the letter and everything worked out perfectly. I am currently running the kaos Froyo ROM v30 and am very happy. That being said I think you brought these next questions on yourself
1. Now that I have a taste for the rooted life I was wondering if anyone could tell me the difference between the Tazz and kaos Froyo ROM

If you run the Market app, and then click on Menu -> Downloads, it should have listed there everything you previously had installed. Yay!

You will still have to download your apps one at a time from there - this time. But at least you won't have to go looking for them, the market should remember them for you. Also (FYI) in Froyo, there is an option underneath

Settings -> Privacy -> Back up my data

which allows you to automatically restore all your apps after a factory reset (they download automatically. That won't happen the first time, but it will for subsequent Froyo ROM installs or factory resets if you turn that option on. Also, a lot of generic Android UI settings and things like WiFi passwords will also be remembered and restored automagically after a factory reset or new Froyo ROM installation.

As for coffee, I recently quit. If you are feeling particularly generous, please make a donation to a local charity.

Congrats on rooting - make sure you are making good Nandroid backups as you proceed, and post further questions to new threads on the board (there are a lot of other experts here that don't look at this thread any longer).

Not sure if this has been asked in this thread yet but here it goes. What, if any, is the best way to restore your apps after rooting? I've downloaded Titanium Backup but my previous apps are not there. Is this something that should have been done with the OTA 2.1? Any help would be greatly appreciated

Well, the post immediately before yours has this suggestion:

(1)
Open up the Market app on your newly installed ROM and go to Menu -> Downloads.
Download each app manually (the Downloads List should be the list of Apps you had installed on your prior ROM)

(2)
Use Ti Backup on the prior ROM before you remove it, and then use Ti Backup to restore them. OR,

If you have already installed the new ROM:
- Make a Nandroid backup of the current (new) ROM
- Restore the Nandroid backup of the old ROM
- Install Ti Backup and backup the apps
- Restore (via the Nandroid Backup you just made) the new ROM, Download Ti Backup and restore your apps.

There's other ways, too, but both of those should work.

Yes you can.

You can use either the detailed instructions in this thread, or look for the "Sticky" post "One Click" at the top of the (Eris) "All Things Root" sub-forum (the same place you found this thread).

If you use the "One Click" method, you might still want to look at the pictures and instructions in the fourth post in this thread - instructions on how you go about making a "Nandroid" backup, and then "Wiping" and "Flashing" a new ROM.

Well, I don't know what ROM you are using. Details like that are sort of important.

Is "my navigation app" the same thing as Google Nav? What happens when you "load" it? Do you get a "Force Close" notice?

When you say "connect to my PC", are you talking about mounting the SD card as a disk drive, or using ADB in "USB debugging mode", or HTC Sync? If it is the first, did you see a little USB symbol appear in the notification bar at the top of the screen?

Well, I have used xtrSENSE 4.0.6.1 for a couple of days straight (I am not on it right now), but I am pretty sure that every one of those things worked correctly for me.

As far as toggling Disk Drive mode, I pull down the notification bar and tap the "USB Connected" notification. There should be a menu there which includes "Disk Drive Mode".

USB Debugging is independent of the "Disk Drive Mode", although you will find that they do interact with each other in subtle ways.

Settings -> Applications -> Development -> USB debugging


I believe that all of these issues have nothing to do with obtaining root, which is what this thread is about. I can't be sure you didn't have a minor problem with your install because I am not standing next to you and watching your phone - but I think your install went OK.

Please ask questions about specific ROMs or applications in a new thread (or a related thread) - as I have said before, there are lots of helpful experts in this forum, but I am not sure how many of them are looking at this thread any longer - you will get more help and better help too if you put general ROM questions in their own thread.

I'm afraid I'm stuck in a bootloop... followed the instructions, everything went swimmingly, flashed kaosfroyo 3.1, and now the screen is black with "android" in white and a sort of light scrolling by behind the letters (if that makes sense) for the past 40 minutes. I'm thinking I'll just go to bed and see what it looks like in the AM - but wondering what is the next step, assuming it's still stuck? Battery pull presumably, but then what?
