Hello everyone, my names Nick, and I just wanted to ask a few questions. Back in february my wife and I bought 2 droid eris'. Now, we're very happy with the phones. Before these we had samsung delves. So these are night and day with quality. But as most anything, things get bigger and better. Of course the new droids out, it kind of makes the Eris, an outcast it seems. So we've been playing around with a few launchers like launcherpro and adw launcher. So far we both like the launcherpro, and might upgrade to the plus for the widgets. Does anyone with launcherpro plus, possibly tell me what other features you get buy purchasing this app? And my last question is about rooting. What exactly does it do for your phone? Thank you all!

With LP Plus you get the widgets, as you've already noted, and you get the ability to resize the widgets on the screen. I've paid for the plus version, but don't actually use any of the plus features. I paid for it just to support the dev.

As for what does rooting do for your phone - well there are thousands and thousands of posts here about that.
What it did for ME was to get rid of that damned dialer lag - that was the only problem I had with my phone before rooting. The phone overall is a little zippier, and the dialer lag is GONE!

The consensus seems to be that Launcher Pro is superior to ADW in the speed department at the least.. I like them both but have defaulted to LP Plus (plus allows for resizing of things on the screen, which has always been a desire of mine since even before rooting, among other things).

You like your Eris? You'll love it after rooting.

I've paid for the plus version, but don't actually use any of the plus features. I paid for it just to support the dev.

+1, except that I use the Messenger widget now. I like it more than the old Sense version, actually.

Also, he says that he is working on a Friendstream-like widget as well. The Eris never had Friendstream, though the Incredible does, but (I believe) that it will combine your Facebook and Twitter updates in a single stream.

ok so ive decided that i would like to root my phone! I looked at the "for dummies" how to and it looks very easy once you just go step by step. So heres my question.. what are some very good roms that are free, and where can i go to download it? Anyone here have one i could grab or how does that aspect work?

The ROMs are not for sale, but users are encouraged to donate money to the devs, usually via a donate button or link at the dev's page with the downloads.

Try out a developer's page for a long read.. and get your impressions.. here's the xtrROM series page at the XDA forum site:

Way to go on rooting, Nick.

LP is readily available in Market. If you set up your gmail account, Market will work.

Look around you device menus.. by the way, which ROM are you running?

the rom i chose is the xtrom. i like it, very fast!. I got launcherpro. But im still trying to figure out where to find the apks??? like a good site thats well trusted?

I'm not sure what you mean by "where to find the apks."

I'll try to answer that with these remarks:

You'll find an icon in the app drawer called "Market," if you've configured your gmail (that account is what allows Market to work for you).

You need to get Root Explorer from Market and use it to edit the sytem/app folder carefully.

Stock apps can be removed (their apk files) once Root Explorer has su (root) permissions (it'll ask for those permissions from you).

Some apps can be deleted, but some will need to stay for functionality of the system. Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Music and several others can be removed safely, but ask about others in here as we can't list them all but can help with finding out for you which individual ones are ok or not to delete.

Did you flash a custom ROM after rooting? I think most 2.2 ROMs for the Eris should have them. You can also find .apk files for LWP as well, but those may actually be legal and able to be found on the forums. Try XDA.

ya i have the xtrom 4. something rather. not very customizable it seems but its a much nicer phone overall, especially if you run like launcherpro or adw launcher. Everytime i download lwp it doesnt show me a folder or anything that says live wallpapers. so i can never find it.

Are those listed in the upper posts the biggest advantages of Launcher Pro Plus. I have been considering getting it, but not sure I would be using it. The Friendstream would be cool though..

Sorry for jumping in on ya there Nick. Congrats on joining the Root crew. After a little of playing with Zach's XTRrom, give Kaos or Tazz Froyo roms a run too. You will be surprised at the different choices each rom gives you. They all have little differences to them. Enjoy your Eris...
