Is it easy to set up exchange mail on samsung captivate?

The stock mail client has support for Exchange. I've used it, but not in true Exchange fashion. I have Google Apps Premier email accounts that behave like Exchange and when I had my accounts setup through the stock mail client, mail was being pushed to my phone, my primary calendar was syncing with the phone's calendar client, and contacts were also being pushed to my phone.

My case and your case aren't exactly the same, but I've read from other Exchange users that it works...but it's not the greatest. I've read that a lot of people use an app called "Exchange Touchdown". Supposedly it will do a much better job compared to the stock mail client.

Hopefully some Exchange users chime in for you...

Actually, my school just switched to"Live" accounts by Microsoft using outlook.com as the server, and set up using my Captivate's stock email client was painless via Exchange. It was actually the only way I could link it to the account, as I was trying imap but couldn't get it to connect, under exchange it went right through. It actually is the only client I have been able to sync thus far. Your mileage may vary, but it works surprisingly well for Live Accounts hosted on outlook.com.

@Captivate 808, I will get back to you later on on this, but I could have swore I had read somewhere that there is a way to choose which folders sync and in which direction, but I don't remember where yet...

I am using it with my companies exchange server and it works OK. My main disappointment is there is no option to delete emails from from the phone and leave a copy on the server. I tried configuring K9 for several days to no avail. Hopefully the next K9 update fixes that.
Also using the stock e-mail client with a company exchange server, and my gmail acct. Setup was pretty basic - no worse than my old WM6.1 BlackJackII.

In the account sync settings I have an option down under Server Settings To "Delete From Phone and Server" -- It's checked for me, so deletes on the phone do end up in my deleted folder. I haven't tried unchecking it, but the description sounds like this would be the setting to delete emails locally, but leave a copy on the server. "Deleted items will be moved to the Deleted Items folder".

No real complaints from me with it...although the captivate did seem to lose my e-mail acct once. Was a pain to re-add the exchange e-mail acct, but haven't seen the issue since although from other threads it looks like this may be a random issue with the stock e-mail client.

Also for others, due to the way my company implemented mobile support for exchange other folders besides inbox are not synched. I can see that they exist, but if I have rules to move e-mail from inbox to another folder, I can't see the contents of the other folder. This is not a limitation of the Android client, but just a byproduct of my company's policies for mobile exchange support- inbox only -- can't even see my sent folder. Same problem with mobile outlook under my BlackJackII. So if you see any goofiness like that make sure you check with your IT dept before attributing the issue to Android.

I'm curious if your gmail acct pushes your emails to you using the stock e-mail client? I wanted to use the stock client not the gmail app because I have multiple email accounts and I wanted to just use one email client. Oddly, my gmail account only had polling available...no push, so now I use the gmail app for my gmail and stock client for work/school email. Thanks

I'm using Touchdown. Just make sure your company uses an email webserver for exchange. Setting it up was a piece of cake and I tested it for a month before committing and purchase. Syncs calendars, task, inbox, sent items, contacts, exchange company address book etc. Get an email at work and a few seconds later it's on your phone. Love it and so glad since I did not want to use a BB as a secondary for email.

[We use BES for email that's why Touchdown was needed for me on Android]

Touchdown works with BES? I thought it worked with Exchange Activesync? That is how I have it set up.

You read that wrong and yes it works just for Exchange Activesync. I wanted a phone other than a BB. Since we use BES at my job I had to get something to sync with exchange. Touchdown was the answer to my dilemma. I can get my emails from the exchange server without the need to be tied down to the BES.

Your friend is totally wrong. Set up with the stock email is a breeze as long as you have your server info. Mine syncs everything and I actually get emails a few seconds before I do on my laptop. I've had it for a week now and it was a little bit of a curve to get used to the email format coming from WM. I may still try a couple different apps just to see if the layout is better.

Deleting a message off the phone but leave it on the server? From the Email app, go to Account Setting, scroll to the bottom and uncheck "Delete from Phone and Server".

I've been using the default mail client with Exchange through ActiveSync for about a week now. Setting it up was very easy and caused little pain. The contacts, calendars, and mail seem to be syncing and sending just fine.

My biggest issue is the folders in my mail. I use several folders for filing emails when I'm done with them. While the folders are syncing and I can see all the emails in them just fine, I am unable to move emails from one folder to another. This is EXTREMELY annoying and renders my email management useless. I'm shocked that no one at Google thought to add "File" to the options for an email. Pretty lame.

I've read some posts that indicate that this will be fixed in 2.2, but I'm not holding my breath.

You would think, but it doesn't work that way. Unchecking that selection bypasses the Deleted Items folder completely. Messages are still deleted from the phone and the server.

Setting up Exchange is simple as long as you know your login information and the server, and your mailbox is enabled for ActiveSync.

Hi folks, totally new to this forum. We have a user on an Exchange server who previously had a BB. We've removed him from the BES and he now has the Captivate. We've set up the exchange account the way it's supposed to be and the user is getting emails. The moment that he opens them on his PC the messages disappear into "space". They aren't in any folder but if he responds they do show up in the "sent" items.

I was on the phone with tech support for nearly 2 hours today and the guy had no explanation.

Does anyone have any ideas on direction to point me towards?

Thanks,
Tashia

Sounds like he has a rule set up to move read messages to another folder or delete them.
