Root Why do people who are already rooted, want the OTA so badly?

Question says it all. I've answered a whole mess of the same questions about either getting back to stock, or whether or not some configuration will still work with OTA. So what's the motivation to install the OTA, then re-root? Seems like a lot of unneeded effort to get a bloated locked down ROM.

Our devs do a fantastic job on custom ROMS for the DInc. I just don't understand why anyone would want to go back to a stock ROM. I understand if you need to for a return or whatever. But seriously.

Because its something new, and they probably aren't using root for even a fraction of what its capable of.

But that's just it. It's not really even something new. While I haven't looked at the leak, I'm pretty confidant that there's nothing really new about it. It should simply contain bug fixes and probably more garbage than the previous. Anything new will come from our awesome devs!

The reason I am doing it, is because even with the newest leaks, I was still on 2.1, so it wasn't that big of a deal to unroot, it even gave me an idea of what to do when and if I willl need to retunn this phone, and once the OTA comes, it will take a whole 30 seconds to put clockwork recovery back on and another 10 sec. to download busybox and superuser....

I understand quite fine, we all have our reasons, and no one is trying to talk you into accepting the OTA, so I still can't figure out why you are trying to get people to not accept the OTA, it doesn't make or break you either way ya know, it's great what you do here on the forums, esp for myself, and your blog with getting the stock recovery back, im just curious why that's all, no disrespect or hate, nothing but peace and love coming from this user.

I'm not against using the OTA. Normal users accept it and go on with their lives. I just think that if you root, you make a certain commitment that you no longer want your carrier to control your device. And I think that if people take the time to explore what's available, they will understand that the devs here will make much better roms than what the carrier provides.

The issue is that people (not necessarily you) seem to be rooting for no real reason, then go "oh shit can I still get the OTA? Now what?" It's unfortunate that this is a byproduct of making it relatively easy to do all these things now.

I don't get it either. If you are rooted, go all the way and S-OFF and install the ROM of this official OTA that is rooted, deodexed, and has the bloatware removed. You get the EXACT same thing as accepting the OTA, except all the junk is removed and you are still rooted.

Better yet, install the ROM of this official OTA that is untouched and remove things you don't want yourself.

I don't think people understand that the leaked RUU is the EXACT software that will be pushed OTA.

I cannot think of a single benefit of unrooting and getting the update OTA versus staying rooted and installing the leaked RUU.

I will not be unrooting to get this update. I currently have Skyranger 2.5.2 and the root access is quite nice. I already have the SetCPU and the Rommanager as well. I cannot see myself going back to an unrooted phone.

Now, I do currently have the 2.05 baseband, and am wondering if there are major differences in the 2.15 baseband. I really don't want to do the "unrevo forever" utility as it is nice to have the cushion to go back if necessary. Still, I have to ask if there are shattering changes going from 2.05 to 2.15. Anyone know?

I didn't notice any real changes when I went from 2.05 to 2.15, but I would recommend installing it just to keep current. It's ridiculously easy to update the radio if you did forever. Also note, forever is reversible now. See the faq section:

You are right DizkoDan. I used the unrevok3d forever utility to set S-Off, and then I applied the 2.15 radio baseband. Works like a charm and easy as pie. I saved the utility so I could go back if I need to, but I am all set. I have NO plans to update to the official release. I firmly believe that Skyranger 2.5.2 (and soon to be 3.0) and other roms being developed are going to be better than the lame official releases from Verizon.

From what I read, skyradier 3.0 was released a few days ago

That's what I did, and I have no temptation whatsoever to get the OTA. In fact, my only concern is that I don't accidentally install the OTA and mess up my Incredible!

Posting this via Wifi Tether on my rooted (forever) DInc running the 8/26 leak ROM.

Answering the original question -

For me, I just wanted the niceties of root (remove junk, add wifi tether). With previous Windows Mobiles phones, i did enjoy trying various ROM's, but so far with our Incredible, all the current roms are just cobbled together pieces (evo ports, old OTA leaks) that have been unappealing. Frankly, right now for quality alone, the only ROM i trust is the HTC released, because i know they have all the right software and drivers for the phone.

I am sure the other ROMs are OK, but they just aren't for me. Of course, it also doesn't help that I have been so happy with the stock 2.1, that i haven't felt the need to tweak in general (unlike WM of old....)..

I wouldn't unroot to get an OTA ever, usually within a day if not the same day, someone will make a zip file you can install like any other ROM. There's already one that's untouched, and nothing is changed. There's another that's deodexed, zipaligned and all that too.

It just seems that from reading forums, a lot of people don't really take the time to read or understand what they're doing. That and probably when something "official" comes out, they think it's somehow better if they get it OTA than installing it like any other ROM?

Who knows, I'm still using the Second Wave ROM, and I have no issues with anything, getting great battery life and it's super smooth and responsive. I'll continue to stick with this ROM for a while.

I think a good majority of the people on this site rooted just for 2.2 because they got impatient waiting for it. I think also many people thought that 2.2 would bring bettery battery life and fix some of the issues that they have with the Incredible.
I say this because this is kind of my thought process when I had my Eris , I wanted the device to work better then it did and I thought going from 1.5 to 2.1 was going to solve the phones problems. I flashed 2.1 and really just ended up with more problems.
I believe a lot of people have that same mindset. My mindset with the Incredible all along was to tinker and play with it flashing ROMS etc. I plan on keeping this phone for awhile likely until VerizonLTE Phones are released. But I also get bored easily flashing ROMS, changing kernals etc keeps me interested so I don't lose my love for my Incredible haha

Anyways that's my thoughts on why people want the OTA , plus it makes the phone suported by Verizon again with out and headaches to the average cell phone user

From my own perspective, I unrooted because the only thing I wanted it for was Wifi hotspot ability (and the flashlight thing on the side). Both of these are baked into the 2.2 update, and there are other threads I've read that could get the Wifi Hotspot working without paying out the nose and without root.

I can say a little bit of fear combined with laziness drove me to unroot as well—if something goes wrong with the phone in the future, it's Verizon's problem, not mine. And I have a fairly sobering record with DIY electronics to the point that I just don't want to have to troubleshoot my own issues every month.

I'm also fairly confident that the unrEVOked team will find a new way to hack 2.2 in the not too distant future if I end up regretting going with the official update. No system is perfectly protected, and they do a bang-up job of finding all the backdoors to give you access in a reasonable amount of time.
