Desire's AMOLED - On all the time?

TBH, dont know... but the charge will likely fry your battery if you do it every night overnight

No, I do not think it would fry the battery simply by plugging to a charger overnight. I do it all the time, on a nightly basis. But all I wanted to know is whether I could leave the Desire ON, showing the clock as a "night clock", or to leave the Desire on either Stand-by mode or OFF altogether?

I leave mine on, screen off, on charge every night. It doesn't overcharge it and the battery doesn't suffer too much, or didn't on my Hero.

I'm not sure about screen burn out or anything though.

I did the same as you, but wondered whether you can leave the screen ON and use one of the "Night Clock" apps to display the clock as a cool bedside alarm clock.

Maybe I am being a bit naive here but isn't the phone set up for use as an overnight clock? After all, switching it to night clock whilst plugged in means the screen will stay on - as far as I can see this is the only time the screen will stay on longer than the 30 minute maximum screen timeout setting. Doesn't it just trickle charge the battery? Or am I missing something? :thinking:

The Desire already has a built in night clock function ... I use it every night coupled with the alarm functions.

If you choose the "Desk Clock" programme .... you can set alarms if you wish and then for night use, just hit the "Moon & Star" symbol towards the bottom of the Desk Clock Main Screen ..... This displays a very muted time with date and any set alarm times underneath.

While the phone is plugged into the charger, this stays on screen indefinitely ... and it also acts like a traditional PC screensaver - it moves position around the screen to avoid burnout.

If you use this without the phone being plugged in to the charger then the screen shuts down as per normal.

There are a number of 3rd party apps that allow you to change the screen time out so that it will stay on all the time without being on charge.

Obviously this uses up battery. I put mine in Airplane mode, screen brightness as low as possible and after 6.5 hours of the night clock being on the battery was at 68%. 82% of that was Android and the other 18% was the screen.

I wouldn't leave an amoled screen on unnecessarily as an amoled screen has a life of 3 years (that is constant use), LCD screens have a 6 year life if anyone wants to know.
As far as i am aware amoled & lcd screens don't suffer from screen image burn like the old crt tubes do.

LCD definitely shouldn't. I assume OLED are the same. Plasma do.

That is very interesting, i stand corrected on that.
I always thought the burn in was caused by the beam from the cathode ray tubes, therefore making the lcd & amoled immune to it still i will store that info for future use.
Me too! I always thought this was limited to CRT and had no clue plasma was susceptible to a similar problem. It's called "phosphor burn" as far as I remember with CRT's.

I knew plasma was susceptible. I thought LCD was not. I didn't know it was dependent on quality. AMOLED I assumed wouldn't be being a newer technology, but its one of r under the belt.

So the desk clock app (night time mode) will move the time around occasionally to prevent burn in - fine. What about decreasing the AMOLED/SLCD screen's life by doing this? I use the desk clock nightly and will stop if it is unnecessarily killing the lifetime of the screen. I (think) I have SLCD
