AMOLED vs. LCD Screens

You start off by saying "Let me get this straight" which makes it sound like you have a question. Then you go on to say they that the screens well be amoled because they have to go through the fcc....ok....but you go on to add that "even if you get an lcd screen" part which negates anything you just said prior to that.

Also where did this mini rant come from? Not like these board are flooded with this one question, some people are just concerned.

There is no reason to be afraid ever. Most people on here can't even tell the difference between AMOLED and LCD. They care because they want amoled because everyone else has it which is understandable but if DInc does go LCD there is nothing you can do about it. Either you take it or leave it. HTC is not going to send you one with an AMOLED screen after the switch.

I believe 'let me get this straight' can also be used in non-question situations. Yes 'even if they get an LCD' is the worst case scenario because people here are paranoid. Please look at the posts. There are tons of em.

The new droids or your refuribished models are NOT shipping with the damn LCD screens. They are still AMOLED okay? If HTC did switch to them, they would have to go through FCC again and there WILL be a formal announcement somewhere validating the switch. Until then PLEASE spare the posts asking whether its LCD or not. Even if it is there is really nothing you can do about it. Deal with it or switch to a different phone or wait for Samsung Fascinate.

This makes the most sense and the only practical way would really be to add a new SKU.

Do you really think that there are people out there who choose the Incredible over every other phone JUST because of the AMOLED screen? I highly doubt it.

UUmmm, YES! Because the screen is quite noticeably better when held next to a old style Backlit LCD screen phone.

What I find most amusing is that the people who are complaining about the change (which hasn't even happened yet!) are using it as an excuse to switch over to the X. Which would make sense if the X had an AMOLED screen but it doesn't! So you are switching away from your DINC that does have the AMOLED to get the X which doesn't because you are worried that maybe in the future you will break your phone and maybe get a replacement that has an SLCD...

Agreed, you won't find me switching to a "X", the screen image quality is horrendous in my opinion from the tests we've put it through while side by side with OLED display phones.

I give up! The concern over these screens is just becoming pointless and I am not in the habit of kicking a dead horse.

Not at all, we want the modern improved screen with the better picture, not yesterday's technology(LCD)

I figured I'd throw my 2 cents in here. I promised myself that if I ever finally registered here, I'd respond to this thread. As stated by many people, the Droid Incredible still uses and AMOLED screen. The LCD switch went to the Nexus One (which is still sold internationally) and the Desire. This freed up the AMOLED screens that would have gone to them, to now go to the Incredible only.

As for AMOLED vs. LCD, it's not so nearly one-sided as many believe. Each technology has it's advantages. For example, AMOLED tends to be over saturated. LCD can be spot on, grossly under saturated, or somewhere in between. A Few examples would be the original Droid, which was near spot on in color reproduction. The Droid X was a little under saturated, likely to help preserve battery life. The "Retina" display of the Iphone 4 is grossly under saturated, an obvious attempt to consume less battery.

Also, as we all know, LCD is usually more visible in direct sunlight. While the Incredible's OLED puts out roughly 250 nits (brightness) at max brightness (a typical desktop monitor is 250-350 nits, btw), the Iphone 4 and comparable devices puts out 400-500 at max brightness. They just don't compare in direct sunlight.

OLED has two other distinct advantages. Due to being self emissive, OLED has a naturally better contrast ratio. Also, due to having a natural response time of almost zero (like CRT), there's not "ghosting" effect, making motion more fluid and natural looking.

So, if you've got a PMP (portable media player) that you use primarily indoors, OLED us superior. If you have a device you plan to use outdoors more often, LCD is more usable.

Of course, Samsung didn't do use any favors when they switched to the Pentile Matrix array for the sake of reducing costs and battery consumption. Despite a resolution of 480x800, in certain situations the resolution can dip as low as 392x653. This is because each pixel doesn't have the same subpixels, meaning when certain colors are displayed, one pixel has to borrow from another, thus condensing effective pixels. The other effect of this when pixel sharing isn't feasible is a noticeable color banding effect.

Bottom line is, provided the S-LCD used in the Desire/N1 was a true-24bit display, I'd prefer that over the current OLED screen. But, I'm happy with my OLED screen, as it's more than sufficient.

I received two incredibles 4 weeks apart, both brand new from Verizon. I couldn't help but notice the display was obviously different.

I don't know why that is, I'm assuming they switched the incredible to SLCD. Both run the stock software that comes default. Both had brightness maxed out with auto-brightness off.

What do you guys make of this? Do you really think they switched to SLCD on the incredible?

Kind of torn deciding which to keep since it's an exchange.

Guess which one is the newer one and which is the older? Answer------------->Left one is the older phone, Right is the newer one.

Legally, they can not, unless the new display had a new SKU and FCC approval. Also, the new firmware shows the OLED as a spec in the red feature cloud, when 2.2 boots up.

The again, if it is a refurb.... The left one looks LCDish to me, unless contrast is messed up on the left device.

I emailed HTC regarding this, I got back this "I understand that you purchased two Incredibles and notice that the screens are different. HTC is experiencing high-demand for many of our phones, specifically our phones with 3.7 inch displays. The new SLCD display technology enables us..." The rest is just explaining SLCD.

The pictures are not great quality, but if you look at the clock, the black on it is obvious. They're both maxed out in brightness. But even ignoring that, the right one has a purplish tint.

There is a lot of variability in the brightest and colour of AMOLED screens, especially since I suspect Samsung has lower QC standards to increase output. If it's not satisfactory, get it replaced.

Blurry pictures don't help the matter...
If you look around the edges of the screen and notice checkered lines (instead of smooth line running top to bottom), then it's most likely be AMOLED (pentile one that's been used in both original N1 and Incredible). Or you could try to watch some movies in letterbox format and see if you can readily tell where the border begins and ends.

Yes, only because it sticks out, compared to the other- bum display? I deal with retail products (amongst others) in current and previous job and when rolling products out or setting bill of materials, our attorneys ALWAYS make sure we are not messing up, sometimes odd state laws

I did not say it was a LCD, just compared to the other it looks washed out. Even the refurb angle would not wash, since STILL has to go through FCC if a new product being sold to consumers or as replacement.

I said it "looked" LCDish, not that it was an LCD.

Looks like the EVO, so probably a flavor of that. I prefer the Inc, in spite of suck butt call quality (even with official radio).
