Root 2.2 root seem likely?

So now that the 2.2 update is rolling out, what is the likelihood of it not being rootable?

I've heard people talking about people rooting to turn S-Off or whatever, but that seems (or sounds) a little more complex than just following an easy root guide.

I don't want to mess with ROMs atm, but I would like to root after the stock 2.2 to get rid of some bloatware and have access to some of the root-only apps.

Have any of the masterminds behind rooting shed any light on the possibility of Inc 2.2 rooting? If it will happen, do you think it will be significantly more complex and dangerous than rooting 2.1 and setting s-off?

I have heard (although, it's tough to know for sure until the update it fully out) that 2.2 did not patch all the exploits for root. And within time 2.2 will be root able. but, S-OFF is VERY easy, and now that S-ON has been released, no reason not to do it.

unrevoked.com then click the incredible, then go to unrevoked forever, this is for S-OFF, you need to be rooted, then all you do is download the file, put it on ur sd card, and install the .zip in clockwork recovery. once this is done you will have S-OFF, now you can 100% retain root after the 2.2 OTA. but you need to get back to the stock recovery.

Yea man no problem. Are you rooted, on stock were you at right now in terms of your phone. and what I mean by stock recovery is if you rooted, then you have the clockworkmod recovery installed and in order to get the OTA you need to have stock, so that would entail downgrading the phone back to stock, but you would want to leave S-OFF (which can only be attained by rooting) then downgrade by unrooting, back to completely stock minus the s-off, there is a sticky somewere about downgrading to unroot, but if you need help rooting first or something lemme know.

Can one of you guys please explain your reasoning for not wanting to use the "Official" leak? It seems like there have been a ton of threads about people wanting to unroot and put everything back to stock so they can wait for the update to get pushed to their phones.

It just seems like a crap load for work to do for no gain. I mean hasn't it been confirmed that the 8/26 leak is the official update anyway?

I don't think it CAN be confirmed until someone who is about to get the OTA pulls it from there phone and compare the two. They more than likely ARE the exact same. But mainly it's for peace of mind, and for ME. I was rooted, and still running 2.1 anyway, so I want to get the official and I can still keep root. honestly it's not much work. I mess with my phone constant, and it's just personally preference. and there is gain, people want that "official" feel ya know. I personally don't lose a minute of sleep, because honestly it's the furthest thing from my mind right now. It will come when it comes, and I will still have root. People do what they do for there own reasons and personal benefit.

Yeah now that i have 2.2 Im waiting for root. I cant wait to give some folks time to get something going. Just like i did with 2.1 with the unrevoked reflash it took less then 2 mins and bam i was rooted!

why didn't you just flash s-off so you could have root and 2.2??

you could have always just flashed back to s-on, but I have also heard that the root exploits they know about didn't get discovered, or patched, and the re-flash won't work as is, but hopefully won't take too long before they whip something together.

ok but if you want s-off you have to root, if you want root you need to backup and restore stuff, then if you want to go back to stock recovery to get ota you have to do it again? I know you can get root in 2 minutes and s-off shortly after, but what if you don't want to have to redo all your contacts and apps and settings? I don't see how you can quickly get through this s-off -> stock recovery process quickly without having to redo a lot of stuff. Maybe I just don't get it.

None of your settings and apps change with root. They all stay the same. They only get wiped when you put on a custom ROM. Even then you can use Titanium backup to restore all your app/settings to the way they were before. It's very simple.

Depending on what you do, you might find getting to a rooted 2.2 really easy, I was nervous but turns out for no reason

You get a custom recovery by running Unrevoked3. It'll give you Clockworkmod. It doesn't flash or wipe your phone to do so.

If you want the official OTA, do this.

Root.
Make a Nandroid backup and then a Titanium backup.
Run Unrevoked Forever (S-off).
Go back to stock recovery (yes, this does wipe it).
Apply OTA.
Afterward, you should still rooted through S-off so you can run Titanium again to get back everything.
