Do you think the Droid X is the most "future proof" phone currently available?

Yes it will be better longer than either of those 2. There is no such thing as a future proof phone. I am looking forward to what I will be getting next summer. I can't keep a phone longer than a year and that is even pushing it.

BTW, nothing that is available now on verizon will be considered good by the end of the year or early next year when LTE phones are rolling out.

phones will continue to evolve at an incredible rate of speed. i think it is a tossup between the x and the galaxy s. the hummingbird has a small edge on the omap, but like chris said, LTE phones will likely be out before your contract is up. there are gonna be a lot of disappointed X users in 9+ months. i'll never sign a 2 year contract ever again. if LTE phones drop on the early end of the possible release schedule (late spring/early summer, 2011) that will be right around the time my 10 month upgrade date comes around. if they dont drop in early summer, the x will suffice until they do.

The Fascinate\SGS will be more "future proof" than the Droid X.

Better CPU and GPU, screen is A LOT nicer, etc. Lets hope they fix the GPS issues.

Even the new dual core qualcomm cpus barely surpass the 1ghz hummingbird in the leaked test results.

The X is better than any galaxy S phone, that is why I didn't wait for one.

I don't mind having a 2-year contract. I can use the same phone for almost 2 years until verizon will let me upgrade. The only thing I worry about is when everyone else moves on to new phones, I will still be here and there wont be nearly as much support in forums like this. Also, no one will want to develop for it.

Any phone is "future proof" as long as it keeps doing what you expect of it. There's always a new gadget around the corner, after all.

I just hope that if Motorola is not planning on releasing an official Gingerbread for this phone, that they are nice enough to unlock the bootloader when the phone is officially EOLed in March. There's no reason for the encryption once the commercial life of the phone has ended.

Its hard to say. But I dont think so.

I think the EVO and the EPIC is. They already have 4G. They are more future proof than anything else out.

If Sprint was smart, they would try to keep those 2 phones around. They could be the most affordable 4G phones on the market when 4G finishes rolling out.

Vs. the Inc, yea. Vs. the Fascinate...tough to say. If Super Amoled becomes the standard screen..the X is behind. Me personally I hope LCD stays around for awhile. The cpu is a lil better, the gpu alot better for the Samsung phones. The Samsung phones have a 6 axis accelerometer, the X 3.

After reading what I posted....I say the Samsung phones have the edge on being future proof vs. the X. And thats not even mentioning the locked bootloader on the X...

Doesnt mean I'm not happy with my X. Reception and battery life is very nice. It just means I give credit where its due.

That's IF Sprint continues to roll out WiMax. They have said in the past that if Clearwire goes LTE, they might sway toward LTE and build their own LTE network. Clearwire is starting LTE trial in the fall.

I personally think the most future proof phone will be the best specced phone because of xda. Hell, if Droid 1st gen had better specs they'll still be rolling.

Oh, well, I'll still be around Exiled! We can just hang out together! :D

Haha sure thing! ;)

I was thinking though... Correct me if I'm wrong (I'm fairly new to android and its history...) but the Droid 1 seemed to have an excellent life. Its over 2 years old now, right? I believe it got 2 OS upgrades. It seems like the only phones that really started to be equal to it in status (on verizon at least) were the phones released this summer like the inc, X, and the droid 2. Whats to keep the X from a similar history? Is it the LTE/4g? dual core? I just think its strange that for 2 years there wasn't really anything that could beat the original droid, and yet, here we are not even 2 months with the X and there's already rumors of a far better phone that people think is worth upgrading. Whats up with the sudden jump in technology?

There is no such thing as a future proof phone, new phones and technology are contstantly in motion. Just be happy with the phone you purchase. You can buy a new one every year, I sign a 2 year contract but I get an annual early upgrade so I can always have the latest, greatest at the discounted price if I want.

Galaxy S devices are more powerful devices, this is a fact that can't be debated. You(and I) may like the X more but it doesn't change the fact. In terms of hardware, the Galaxy S phones are more future proof.

That said, Samsung has a history of abandoning their customers when it comes to phone software updates while Motorola has a good history of keeping their customers up to date so in that aspect the X just may be more future proof.

I don't think the Droid1 is two years old. Didn't it come out at the end of last year?

Just thinking outloud on the issue...

The Galaxy S series is on all carriers in America now. I am not sure how much the OS is tweaked between the devices, but if they are all using the same ROM then I would say they are definitely the most "future proof". If updates for one carry over to all the phones with only minor tweaks it would benefit Samsung to keep them as up to date as possible and not be anywhere near as tough as updating single phones on single carriers.

All in all it is tough for these companies to support devices that EOL when the industry, the specs, and the devices roll over so quickly. Google's announcement that they are going to slow the update cycle of Android down a bit is helpful. Gingerbread is still a ways off. I think anything that is/will be running Froyo is a pretty good bet. As for future proof? Who knows what the minimum specs for gingerbread will be- or which phones will get it.

I don't think that the galaxy s is more "future proof" because they whored it out to all carriers. Each carrier has to test the updates and go through hoops to get it done. If anything, support might get dropped earlier because samsung is competing with itself too much over the carriers. No carrier will see a significant sale of galaxy s device because of this. The dinc, dx, evo are all big releases that get ppl to switch carriers and bring their respective carriers more money in new contracts. Just my opinion.

I think it can be debated as such comparisons are very dependent on the use of the device. I also think that practical factors such as reception, sound quality, battery life, reliability and so on count just as much as specs on paper and benchmarks in determining how long many people may keep a phone, I know that I've kept technically inferior devices because they worked well for the critical functions with how I used them and they were reliable. Also adding to this, we have not yet seen a production Fascinate, so it has not been possible to compare the actual Verizon versions of the two phones.

That said, Samsung has a history of abandoning their customers when it comes to phone software updates while Motorola has a good history of keeping their customers up to date so in that aspect the X just may be more future proof.
I think this also relates to the overall performance as it has not been possible to compare how the Droid X and Fascinate/Galaxy S compare with official Froyo releases, much less with Gingerbread which may negate any UI issues.

The bottom line may really be what defines the useful life of a device may differ greatly for each individual. One person may prioritize the ability to play games while another may be more concerned with accessing and viewing web sites and yet another with mundane things such as call quality, reception area and battery life. However, I do think that LTE/4G is going to be a factor for many people looking at higher end smartphones. However, I see LTE phones being more likely later next year and with our plan I can upgrade in 12 months or transfer an unused upgrade from one of our other plan lines if that becomes an issue. Another example of how everyone's situation may differ.

The Droid X definitely has advantages over the Galaxy S phones, nobody is arguing that it doesn't, but processing power is not one of those advantages. Things like reception, sound quality, and battery life have no real impact on the "futureproof-ness" of phones, things like processing power do. The Galaxy S phones have more of it than any phone in the world right now. It is a fact that the 1Ghz Hummingbird processor(This is in all Galaxy S variants) is more powerful than the 1Ghz OMAP(Droid X/2). All benchmarks confirm this. It is a fact that the PowerVR SGX 540(Galaxy S) is more powerful than the PowerVR SGX 530(Droid X/2). Again, all benchmarks confirm this. It also doesn't make sense for PowerVR's next gen graphics chip to be slower than their previous gen one.

Suggesting that the Fascinate is going to have unknown performance because it is not out yet is like suggesting that a new Dell that is coming out soon that has the same exact hardware as a thoroughly tested and already released HP machine will have an unknown level of performance.

This guy is pretty much nailed it.

Samsung is ahead in terms of hardware, but have an awful history to counter it. Though Samsung does seem to supporting the Galaxy S because of how much is riding on it, I don't blame anyone for the bad perception they give Samsung if I remember the Behold days, they earned it from screwing Beholder owners. I'm just hoping, as a Samsung Vibrant owner, that they'll redeem themselves from now on.

I think this time samsung will stay on the ball. There's to much to lose with the Galaxy line-up. So if they want a Captivate 2/Vibrant 2/ Fascinate 2, then they better support these phones as long as they have to.
