Root To root or not to root, that is the question.

Fellow Androiders,

I have been struggling with this for a while now and I still haven't decided one way or the other. I would say that I am currently 60/40 in favour of rooting but far from convinced, I hope some of you can swing my decision one way or the other to finally put an end to my root based anguish!

OK, I have been using the Desire since UK release and absolutely love it. I've been running Froyo for about 4 weeks through an OTA update from T-Mobile and, although I've noticed slight improvements in certain areas, it certainly hasn't been the earth-shattering improved experience that some people were banging on about - in fact I'd go as far as to say that it has been slightly underwhelming :(

Yes, there are great improvements;
  • Flash support
  • 720p video

Both lovely, but......
I feel slightly let down by;
  • The overall speed "increase" - the update to 2.2 was widely reported as being able to speed some functions up by 5 times! I have not seen this.
  • Apps2SD functionality - its frustrating not being in control as to what is allowed to to be moved.
  • The energy efficiency - whereas some are reporting a doubling of their battery life, I have noticed absolutely no change.

So, would rooting give me the extra control and oomph that would satisfy my lust for all things shiney? Or is it, as some people think, an unnecessary procedure that doesn't have a good risk/reward ratio?

HELP!!!

Oh, I'm not sure how much of an issue it is, but one thing that might be holding me back is that my bootloader version is 0.92?
