HOW TO INSTALL - Froyo 2.2 RUU with the simplest instructions ever - WINDOWS XP ONLY!

I am already running astro file manager but I did not know it did backups so I just did a complete backup of all my apps. So I would asume then my sdcard will not be over written when i do the 2.2 update.

megaupload has some terrible bandwidth, i know.

i gave up my ftp space a long time ago because i just wasnt using it,

ruu is Rom Update Utility. this is how HTC has always delivered "shipped" (official) roms. its a one click .exe that walks you through setting up your phone for the update. you can be sure that this is just as official as the ota, just a different way of installing it.

win7 users may have problems but nothing bad will happen to your phone.
worst case you will get a connection error and your phone reboots normally.

why would you do it? well why wait for verizon to push it to you when you can just install it now?

as he put it, its just another way of installing the official update.
it should have no affect on the way you receive future updates.
the radio that comes with this specific update is, as far as ive learned, official as well.

official 2.2 runs on 2.15.00.07.28
which is the same baseband that comes with this 2.2 update!

i only read a little bit on that subject. that was during my worry about bricking my phone.

it seems to be a more complicated process requiring another RUU and possibly root. my eyes are about to fall out of my head from all the reading ive done.


i found a couple of threads on here that talk all about it:

For some reason I kept getting the usb error even though I'm running windows XP but i ran the OP's guide for windows 7 and that worked for me! Thanks for everything.

So i am runnin XP service pack 3, i downloaded the RUU to my desktop and ran HTC sync, whenver i double click on the RUU it comes up with the "microsoft doesnt recognize this file, what do you want to open it it? or something similar..
any ideas?

keep in mind that these installed apps are no longer connected to the market and will no longer update.

I get what you are saying, but, the fact that ALL my apps will no longer update automatically after being restored in this way is a deal-breaker for me...

What about using AppBrain to restore the apps? Will that preserve the links to the market? I use both ASTRO and AppBrain.

Matt, what is the exact size of the RUU you downloaded? the file hosting sites list it as 178.16 mb while after downloaded it should be 182,434 KB
lets try a couple of simple methods first:

first: in the folder where you have the RUU saved, do the following:
1. go to View > Details
does the size read 182,434 KB?

-if not, delete the RUU you have and try downloading it again from one of the other file hosting sites.

second: dont use htc sync immediately. just mount as a disk drive and do not sync.

last: in the same folder where you have the RUU stored:
1. Tools > Folder Options > View > UNCHECK "Hide Extensions for Known File Types"
2. go back to the RUU and make sure it reads ".exe" at the end.
you could try removing the ".exe" which windows will tell you could make it unstable, then go right back and add it again.

does it open correctly now?





KJ, ive never used AppBrain before. however i do understand how it could be a deal breaker. the reason that the apps dont update anymore is because the market is where devs release their updates. when you back up your .apk's and reinstall them from the SD card, theyre no longer linked to the market because they are now considered "third party."

i was trying to come up with a good analogy but i cant think of one.
getting updates for your apps is like fishing in the lake where devs release new fish ever so often. with your fishing pole permanently in that lake looking for new fish, you'll continue to receive new fish when devs release them.

backing up your apps and having them not be updated is like taking the fish you caught and fishing for them in your bathtub. theyre not part of "Lake Update" anymore, and because theyre not linked, they'll never change. never update.

its more just for convenience. if you already have all your apps updated, then you just have to worry about redownloading all of them again. no biggie. but say theres an app youve been avoiding updating because of bad reviews (which happens), this is a way to lock your app in as the version you prefer.

correct.
this is the unofficial way to receive the official update.
everything is the same as the OTA.

i wouldnt yell it out loud to verizon customer support if you call or go in though.
because if they dont know how to fix your problem, i guarantee they'll come back and say its your fault for installing the update yourself.
even though that is entirely incorrect.

but to calm your nerves, all the software numbers match up exactly.
so rest assured, its legit.
