Hi all. I'm new to rooting. I've read countless threads but I'm confused. I rooted last night using unrevokeds method. I have super user and was able to get wireless tether. I want froyo but I'm not sure how to do it. I don't have any custom roms or kernels yet and I haven't updated the radio. Can I just wait for the update or what should I do? Thanks for any help/ suggestions.

I have taken the process I followed by K.Electron (Thanks to K.Electron for getting me going) on XDA Forums and added to it to walk my younger brother through it. If you have not completed an NANDROID backup start with Step 2, If you have you can skip to Step 3. Let me know if you have any questions.

Updating Incredible from Stock 2.1 to 2.2.

This process is for people with a fully stock phone who want to apply the stock 2.2 update and maintain root.

I just went through this process. (sd card must be formatted to fat32. without that most of this will fail.)

Step 1: unrEVOked Recovery Flash Tool -> unrevoked3 recovery reflash tool, v3.14 (this will root your phone and flash clockworkmod recovery.) Follow the process on Jonamerica

heathsrow, im stuck on #4. how can i tell if its back to stock?

Hold down volume and power until your phone boots into HBoot (with the lil android surfers on bottom). Select recovery. If the phone boots into a menu with an exclamation point, you are on stock recovery. If it loads into a text-based menu with like 5 or 6 options, you are in Clockwork Recovery and need to perform step 4 again.

Ok I'm a bit perplexed. My Dinc is rooted with unrevoked and then ran unrevoked-forever to make it S-Off. I've downloaded the PB31IMG.ZIP from a couple different sites including adrynalyne (one was 120mb, one was 12mb, one was 3.2mb???)
but every time I got into hboot it finds the file in the root of the SD, displays a couple of lines saying something about an error and file corrupt, then returns to the loader.

Not sure what I'm doing wrong at this point or what to try next. It's pretty much stock xcept for rooting and the card is the 2 gb one that came with the phone.

Help or pointers would be appreciated.

Are you trying to download it over a wireless connection? Sounds like the download keeps stalling out or getting disconnected. If possible, download from a wired internet connection (connected directly to a modem/router) and make sure that the file size matches what the host site says it should be. Otherwise it will keep failing.

For step three I followed the directions exactly and was able to get s off. It gets complicated in step four because the download file in the link provided is wrong. I want to help you but I don't remember exactly which files I used. I'm also at work. Pm user ridley. He was able to walk me through the whole process and made it painless as possible.

I actually downloaded it from the phone browser. I'm just not sure which one is correct because of the same name and supposedly same file having 3 very different sizes. :( Of course none of them worked. Going to try to download it on computer when I get home then transfer over (Mac). Still not sure which one is correct.

Thanks Dragonsamus. Yep I got S-Off but the download link and which file is a puzzler. The other thing I noticed and it may or may not make a difference was the 2gb card that came with the phone looks like it's in Fat16 and not Fat32??

I'll check with Ridley also. Many thanks.

Casbah revised Step 4. Try re-downloading the file. It is probably corrupt and check your SD Card to make sure it is still FAT 32.

Step 4: Flash HTC Stock Recovery Image through hboot -> [Recovery] Stock 2.1 Recovery Image for DI - xda-developers

A) Put the file you downloaded from the above site on the root (i.e. not in a folder) of your SD card and hBoot apply. This should happen automatically. If it doesn

Thanks so much to everyone who helped me along! I'm writing up here as best I can what I did in case it benefits someone else. I did get an 8gb card today so I started by formatting it to FAT32 and then copying my files back onto it.

Currently Running:
Android 2.2 SkyRaider 2.5.2
Baseband 2.15.00.07.28
Stock Kernel (though I think I'll upgrade to Hydra tomorrow)

My DInc running stock configuration was already rooted with Unrevoked3 and then I ran unrevoked-forever. Since I'm paranoid when it comes to losing things I did a Nandroid backup as well as a Titanium and Astro app backup then proceeded to "operate."

Next step thanks to Heathsrow:
Step 4: Flash HTC Stock Recovery Image through hboot -> [Recovery] Stock 2.1 Recovery Image for DI - xda-developers
(put into sd card and hboot apply) (this will restore the recovery back to stock as it is needed for the RUU) You need to put this file into the root (i.e. not in a folder) of your SD Card, make sure the file reads PB31IMG.ZIP and not PB31IMG.ZIP.ZIP. Boot into hboot by turning off your phone and then hold the volume down button and the power button until it boots into hboot. Once in hboot, it should ask you if you want to apply the update, click the volume up button to apply the update. Once it is down, it the volume up button to reboot the phone.

Now you have an s-off phone with everything else stock.

After this was completed I started with the baseband upgrade which I found http://adrynalyne.stfuthxbye.net/radio/2.15.00.07.28/PB31IMG.zip
Since I'm on a Mac and not Windows the executable wouldn't work for me so I found the image alone and booted into HBOOT, the phone found the update and asked if I wanted to apply so I chose yes and it did. (note it didn't erase anything at all from my phone at this point).

Next step, again thanks to Heathsrow was:
Step 6: Flash Clockworkmod Custom Recovery. It is available at public:forever [RootWiki] under Installation Instructions it is the second bullet. Put this file in the root of the SD Card and hboot apply) Make sure the file reads PB31IMG.ZIP and not PB31IMG.ZIP.ZIP. (This will load clockworkmod recovery on your phone so that u can apply updates.)

After this I diverted from the previous instructions because I had already downloaded and purchased the ROM Manager from the Marketplace so after backing up all my info from the sdcard I started this and went to chose the ROM to install.
I started with SkyRaider latest stable edition and chose to wipe the phone after downloading the ROM and clicking to install.

This was pretty much it for me. Once it finished and the phone came back up there was Froyo and it seems everything is working (though I haven't pushed it hard yet). I went to Titanium and restored the applications and settings I had backed up and it all came back to life. (though I did make sure not to chose any of the Google or HTC apps) I double-checked with the Astro backup and there were a few I didn't even reinstall.

I know this is not nearly as detailed as Heathsrow's but just wanted to add it in to the knowledgebase!

Thanks again and I hope to be able to contribute more as time goes by!
(reports from Hydra tomorrow hopefully)

Update Sept 6:
After trying out a bunch of ROMS and a couple kernels I've settled down with the Virtuous 2.6 ROM and King BFS#2 Kernel.(though I do like the Cyanogen and SkyRaider ROMS too!) I'm also using a modified keyboard primarily so I can get the pipe | key.
Quadrant score is around 13-1400 and I'm happy with that. I've removed the bloatware I didn't want and "so far" everything is running smooth and peppy!

Very much so Heathsrow!

All,
Couple things I've notice since the update (one I doubt should really be happening if everything was happy)

  1. Several pages I tried in the browser that have flash content either just display a static image or a blue box indicating that there is flash content there (I checked for flash but never received a box) The site I really tried out was
Flash Videos | Albino Blacksheep and nothing. :(
  2. I've encountered 2 force closes on Apps (didn't think to start up shoot me early so I could screenshot but have it running now in case it happens again)

Anyone else seeing anything like this with SkyRaider 2.5.2?

I will say that I have noticed a difference in signal strength since updating to 2.15. Not sure about battery consumption yet and I may try out the Hydra kernel today too.

So I am in the same boat. Rooted my stock 2.1 yesterday and everything is fine. Completed the Titanium backup over ngiht and evrything seems to have gone OK. Really like the hot spot as this was the main reason for rooting for me as well as planning to get rid of bloat ware shortly.

Now, should I wait for VZW to come out with update, unroot, update and reroot?, follow the procedure above?, or wait for the dust to settle and see if a simpler update process comes along where I can apply the 2.2 to my rooted phone? Not to hijack the thread but seemed to be a similar line of questioning. Tx
