So there are many topics on syncing Gmail contacts to phone

but I have yet to see one on syncing PHONE CONTACTS to GMAIL.
I have ABC contacts on my phone, but for some reason there are no contacts in my gmail (even though they were all perfectly synced before-- weird, right?)

So I want to get all my PHONE contacts BACK to GMAIL.
If I syncupdate from my phone, will it get rid of all of my phone contacts because Gmail has 0 contacts? Or will it put all of my phone contacts into Gmail and all will be zen?
Thanks.

RS

There are two types of contacts that you can have on your phone: Google Contacts, and Phone Contacts. They are both exactly the same, except for one thing: Google Contacts will sync with gmail, and Phone Contacts will never sync.

So if you currently have Phone Contacts on your phone that you want to sync, you have two choices. Manually edit and change each one to a Google Contact, or you can export (backup) the contacts to the sd card, delete them from the phone, then re-import that backup as Google contacts.

ahhh the chicken and the egg.......... which has priority the phone or the website.......

to this I cant be 100% sure I but I can share with you my experiences.......

it seems when I sync...... it takes whichever change was made last...... in other words if I have the same contacts on both phone and site....... and delete 1 from phone....... when I sync it gets deleted from site......... when I add on the site....... it gets added on the phone.......

if I have a contact on my phone........ then manually add it to the site....... then later manually delete from site...... it will remove from the phone......

kinda see where Im going with this? it takes the changes chronologically and applies them to both sides when syncing......

you can always do a backup of the contacts on your phone to your SD card then sync to gmail to be certain........ this way if it wipes off your phone then you can easily restore them.......

open contacts > menu> import/export> export to SD card.......... now you have a backup.......... sync to gmail like normal........ if it works GREAT.... if it doesnt.......... use the same steps to import from SD card

sorry if my rambling was confusing :)

I just transferred my contacts from phone to google and noticed the same thing. If I delete a contact on the phone, it gets deleted from gmail. Is there a way to delete from the phone only, leaving gmail intact?

IIRC the way to solve this is to log in to Gmail and create a new group in your contacts...... put contacts you dont want to sync in that group....... I dont think it will sync any groups you dont have setup on your phone.... at least I think thats how I did mine before.....

otherwise everytime you sync to gmail it will put the contact back on your phone

sorry had to do a little looking around to find your answer and never made my way back in to post it lol.......

looks like the easiest method on your phone is to d/l an app from the market called: contact2sim

theres a free version that will allow you to make a complete backup of your contacts to your sim card
