PdaNet USB Tethered and Running Credit Cards for Business

I've had two accounts with Verizon - Mobile Broadband w/ USB modem and my Droid. I've now tethered the Droid to my laptop using PdaNet and it works flawlessly - except when I try to run credit and debit cards.

My card system is a swiper and a keypad that report to a software program on my laptop. It is live with the internet so cards are usually run immediately, getting an authorization in seconds. But when tethered, the transaction is timing out after 90 seconds, it just isn't working like with the UM175 modem.

So is there some different encryption with the modem vs. the Droid? Like I said, websites and email are fast and quick - CC is screwed up. Any ideas on settings?

Unless you're using the PDAnet PAID version, it may not work as the free version blocks secure sites. That might be the culprit. Just a SWAG...

A very good SWAG. Card info has to go over a SSL connection.

then you can tether - via the free app Wireless Tether - your laptop to your droid for free and not have SSL issues with the free version of PDA Net.

The free version says it allows a 2 week trial of access to secure sites, then it locks them out. I'm still within that window as I work the bugs out before committing to the PdaNet system. I was thinking the same as you all, but I can access secure sites like my bank, work site, etc. just fine.

I don't mind paying for the PdaNet, I just want to be sure it does what I want first. Thanks for the ideas, please keep them coming - I really want this to work.

Can you try the built-in USB Tethering on the droid (you need the 2.2 OTA Update). Do you have the same problem with that?

The PDANet screen will tell you that its blocking secure sites, you should check that to see if it says it is or not. Also, are you sure you don't have to register to get the two week trial? I've only used PDA Net a few times, and not for secure stuff, but usually when someone says "Free for two weeks!" they mean: "Give us your credit card info and we wont charge you for two weeks! (Hopefully you'll forget and we'll get to charge you anyway!)"

Actually, June Fabrics is very much above board with their policy and quite clear in what they tell you. PDANet is truly usable as a free product and has full functionality for the first 2 weeks; after which https is blocked. They do not ask for a credit card up front nor anytime when using the product. If you choose to pay, you go to the website and purchase a license key. Only then do they ask your credit card. I speak as one who has paid for 2 licenses for PDANet, once when I was a Palm Treo user and then after I went with the Droid; I paid the $23 (now I hear it is down to $18) lifetime license and find that it is well worth the money. I won't have to pay $20/month to VZW and the connection is reliable. Plus I help to keep a good company in business.

I agree with cwcheese ... I had PdaNet on my winmo Q9c. When I got the Droid I e-mailed them to see if I could transfer it to the Droid. Sadly they so no but, they sent me a download link for $10.00 off the market price. Howz that for customer service ? They are TopNotch !!!
