Why I am going to pass on FROYO

As everyone waits to install the OTA or thinks about putting on the leak, I have decided not to install it when it comes to my phone for the following reasons

1) No new bluetooth drivers
2) Battery life doesn't seem to be improved
3) Several reports of the phone lagging and just not working after installing it resulting in the need for a factory reset. Ill pass on a reset thank you.
4) Reports of HTC sense issues still with FROYO

Hopefully there will be a second release that fixes the bugs, then ill install it, or wait for 3.0, which is due out in January.

I don't use bluetooth, so this isn't really a deal-breaker for me.

I actually have noticed the battery life to be better, even without using an app killer....especially without using an app killer. It's SO much better at managing background tasks.

My phone works fine...I've never been app-heavy so I didn't run into a lot of force closes. I think honestly, if you have something other than stock it's going to be expected upon a new release that those applications aren't going to work as they previously did. You might not need a reset, just uninstall what doesn't work.

What sense issues? I personally love sense ui - I've never had problems with it and still don't.

Overall it was a VERY smooth update for me and I have nothing bad to say about verizon, HTC, or the way they handled this update. An expected update time might've been nice, but really we should just be thankful we're getting an update.

Keep in mind I did have the official OTA. I didn't use any roms/root/ruu or anything of that sort. That could very well mean all the difference on the reports you're seeing.

Afterthought: Another note about the battery. A big issue is that people expect the battery to last forever when this is in fact a performance device. That's like getting a performance car and expecting it to get the same gas mileage as a compact car. If you want good battery life don't use a phone that rivals low-end computers.

It's actually quite a bad idea to kill applications in a linux system. Here's something you can read that might help you understand a bit more:

The thing that makes me think there won't be anymore updates for this.

I had a moto droid and Eris, and I got the OTA 2.1 for both of them.

Like the Incredible the Moto Droid, used to say 2.1update1.
The droid Eris said 2.1

The two phones that were labled 2.1update1, got another update.
the eris that says 2.1, isnt getting anymore updates.

it just leads me to believe that it would say 2.2update1 if we were getting anymore updates.

I assume it would just keep telling you to update every 30 minutes until you do it.

I also don't understand the reasoning behind not updating. You don't lose any features updating...you only have a potential gain...things not changing to me doesn't constitute not upgrading.

He's not using a task killing program. He's using a program designed to close certain programs based on existing or pre-existing contexts. Closing GPS when exiting out of Google Maps, for example.

Yes. I'm using Tasker to do that but I am also using it to kill programs in certain cases. For example, under certain circumstances, my phone runs a python script. This python script acts as a trigger to a second program I want to run. If I don't kill both python scripts, they simply hang out in memory and clog up my notification bar. I can simply click on them to terminate the scripts, but that's a pain so I have Tasker simply kill the scripting environment once the scripts have run. I also use it for things like starting up GPS when Maps opens and killing it when Maps closes.

ohh there's always one. I remember a member of the Eris forum that was sold on 1.5 instead of 2.1 never really understood it but to each his own

2.2 makes the phone insanely better , even better the jump from 1.5 to 2.1 did for the eris. The speed diffrence on loading pages is just remarkable compared to 2.1 and just opening programs is faster. Everything is smoother

yes 2.2 didn't address some peoples issues. Battery is about the same , BT is the same, and it still requires a bump charge... But all the same issues were with 2.1 so why not have these issues with a better operating phone ??

The problem isn't whether or not the program is called a "task killer". The fact of the matter is that a task IS being killed. If you kill a task and it's not ready to close it'll come back and keep doing it's thing. Once it's done, it'll close. You actually waste more battery by allocating resources to making sure a task that won't stay closed will, when there's a reason that task won't close prematurely.

Froyo manages things very very smoothly, so you don't have to. In fact...I noticed when I did close something the phone didn't like, an htc loading screen came up and reloaded my entire phone. That never happened before. I'd say let Froyo be Froyo.

I believe the scenario with the python scripts is fine. I can't say for sure as I've not dealt with that. Closing the GPS is not so great. If you back out of it normally it finishes it's task, then becomes a background process, and then gets closed. It won't actually effect your battery at all - just your ram and very insignificantly at that.

Hey, I get what you are saying. And it's not really that bad of an idea to wait until more people report getting the OTA and confirm all is good. Right now, there are not that many reports out there of people actually having it.

It's your choice of course, but here are my thoughts FWIW....

1) No new bluetooth drivers

Well... neither does 2.1 and you use that. And if you continue to, you still won't have them. So what's changing?

2) Battery life doesn't seem to be improved

Mine has. It's not a huge improvement but it is an improvement. And as long as it hasn't gotten worse, it wouldn't matter to me.

3) Several reports of the phone lagging and just not working after installing it resulting in the need for a factory reset. Ill pass on a reset thank you.

4) Reports of HTC sense issues still with FROYO

I haven't seen many credible reports of this. And better yet, I haven't seen a single report of people having problems with the official leak. The OTA will install over the phone and update, similar to what you would do when you upgrade Window's and choose the "upgrade" option which keeps all of your old settings. The leaked OTA will flash the phone and completely wipe it before installing 2.2.

Anyone who has ever spent 1 day working in IT will tell you that it's ALWAYS best to do fresh clean installs. I suspect that is the reason that we are seeing a few reports of problem OTA installs but none with the leaked. Which is why I went with the leak.

Don't hold your breath, my dear Unless there are major widespread problems, there will not be a second release of 2.2 (it is working fine by most accounts) and we won't see Gingerbread until at least March or April.


All and all, my recommendation is to give it another week or two and then update your phone. But please don't hold out for an update that will never happen or Gingerbread in 6-8 months. Even if it doesn't have a few features you would have liked (like huge battery life improvement or bluetooth) it DOES have a lot of great features. The biggest and most important it's almost 3x faster Quadrant score. Also much better single. And if that's not important enough... you can use the camera flash as a flashlight without rooting!!

Its like reloading a computers os; much better performance and only choosing the apps you want n use. Also, faster than having to delete 4000 messages. I will do factory resets every couple of months. Android has made it simple, easy, and in my head, necessary for primo optimization.

Edit: this gives me an idea for a quick scam against elderly owners like the computer repair guys that just reload a computers os. Muahahahaha!!!!

Its like reloading a computers os; much better performance and only choosing the apps you want n use. Also, faster than having to delete 4000 messages. I will do factory resets every couple of months. Android has made it simple, easy, and in my head, necessary for primo optimization.

If you're 'tech savvy' then you should realize everything that comes with updating. They fix bugs, and introduce more, such is the reason for 'updates'. You should also realize they can't always add new things, they have to prioritize and get to what they can while meeting a deadline that pleases customers.

If you want to hold off for the real OTA, go for it.
