Root OTA 2.2 and rooted 2.1

Ok, i got the ota notification this morning and i posted this question in another thread that got moved and now not the topic of conversation any more...

i have a rooted 2.1 DINC with no further mods.

1. if i apply the update will i brick the phone, realizing i would loose root

2. can i just reroot via Unrevoked after update

tnx

If you update you will lose root.

Currently there is no method for rooting 2.2 ( although there are rumors that a exploit used to root the EVO on 2.2 should/will work for the dinc, if that true it should be out in a couple weeks.

the ONLY current way(that I know of at least) to keep root while upgrading to 2.2 through either the OTA or RUU is to run "unrevoked forever" which sets "S-OFF"

note: s-off does not "keep" root it just allows you manually push a custom recovery image back on to the phone, which intern allows you to add SU back on. there's instrucions in the 2.1 to 2.2 rooted thread.

ok, just so i am clear (sorry noob here) if i apply the OTA now just being rooted will only cause me to loose root, but not brick the phone, right ?

the reason i asked was because i thought i read somewhere that applying an OTA to a rooted phone would brick it...

but you also would suggest i run unrevoked forever prior to the update so i can get root back an easier way, right ?

I think a sticky combining the issue would be helpful. I just checked and there are now at least 3 threads on the same issue.

A step by step how-to for us noobs would be great too...

unrevoked, unrevoked forever, RUU.... my head is spinning....

includes most of your answers.

If I was you I would start at the point of installing unrevoked forever if you want to keep root.

Note: ANYTIME things aren't 100% stock there is a small rare chance of bricking a phone (to be fair even if its stock it might brick)

My understanding is depending on what "root" you have (custom recovery SU other stuff etc) the OTA will either do one of two things. It will fail or it will update you to completely stock 2.2 in which you lose root.

Also, MOST of the stories I've read on the forums, the phones are NOT bricked. people just freak if it won't boot. 99% of the time if you can get into hboot the phone can be recovered.

Ok, got everything working, so now i'm update to stock 2.2 with s-off

Problem was the PB31IMG.ZIP file. Somehow i got hold of the wrong one. The one that eventually worked was a ~142 meg file, not the much smaller one that some post linked to..

Now i just need to figure out how to re-root and restore my apps...
