Root best method for a nandroid backup? and a little insight on other tools?

I've been refraining from updating to any of the new froyo roms (or any Froyo leak, for that matter) Simply because I don't know how to really make a nandroid back up.

From what I've been reading for the past 4 days, there are 2 ways to make a nandroid back up. (Please correct me if I'm wrong.)

1. Using Clockwork's Rom Manager
2. Koush's Boot Strap

Which is the most efficient way of backing up my phone? Another question, when making a nandroid back up - you're simply backing up the settings and the insides of your phone and not your apps?

So if nandroid backup doesn't recover or backup your applications, then what is the suggested method for that as well?

I have downloaded RSD lite 4.7, and have downloaded the Deodex/Froyo rom but I haven't touched it. The RSD lite will only be used to "flash" my phone back into stock right?

In my little "android" folder (on my pc) I also have "android-sdk_r06-windows" I can't seem to install SDK because of the fact that my tethering won't allow me to go through https. :( Will I ever need SDK throughout any of this?

I'm not necessarily asking how to install any of the custom Roms, but more or so asking what is the most effective way of going about backing up my phone as well as the apps, and maybe a little explanation of what each tool does?

Sorry if I'm asking for a little too much, but I would really like to experiment with my phone without being so hesitant. I'm real adamant on learning as much as I can about what I own and what I do, and I'd appreciate everyone or anyone's input.

inb4; I've googled, forum searched, and youtubed explanations for all of this but only found things on EVO and droid1.

Thanks guys.

Bump.
I'm curious on this as well. I've messed around with my phone a lot so far-- rooted, themes, 2.2, etc-- but I've never really bothered to to any sort of back up. dumb, I know... I'm in the process of doing a ClockworkMod Recovery backup. I hope I'm doing the right thing. Its taking about 10 minutes but it should be done soon. But I don't really know what to do with it now.

They are both the same backup. One is just launched from within ROM manager. You're backing up the systems and its' settings, apps and all. It doesn't backup your SD card though.

So if nandroid backup doesn't recover or backup your applications, then what is the suggested method for that as well?

You should use either Titanium backup or MyBackUp (Paided version)
Tiabk seems to be the most popular and the one I use the most but either will do. I use these apps to backup the SD card and system settings.
If you have to do a wipe before flashing a ROM you have to use one of them to restore your apps and settings. You can't use a Nandroid to restore, it is used for recovery only.

Yes kind of. If you go to 2.2 you will use it if you have trouble.
You should set it up and make sure you have it all working first IMO. Then if you have trouble its a simple matter of plugging it up and re flashing.

Quite possibly yes
set up the adb setup the RSD lite

Get Kouschs recovery Get ROM manager (paid version). If you get ROM manager the process is fairly automated. You pick the ROM it ask if you want to backup and if you should wipe data and caches. Just select what you want and set back and wait a few minutes.

I would suggest doing it through Koushes boot strap manually once or twice just so you know what the options are doing when asked in ROM manager. But that's just how I learn so it's up to you.

Once you get Recover working and a nandroid backup and RSD lite working your pretty safe to experiment

Thanks for the bump exiled. And an especially thank you Piiman. I really appreciate the time you took to write all of that. When i need to flash on rsd life or install the custom roms, its volume up and power button correct??

To flash i would need to power off my phone, boot into recovery and load up the .sbf file?

I'm hyped up to get all these things installed. Thanks again guys.

RSD lite... you hold power, volume down and home (maybe camera, can't remember) to put it in recovery mode, then plus in your USB and fire up RSD Lite and flash the .sbf file. Custom roms you would use ROM manager to flash them. It will do all the work for you, but you need Koush's bootstrap loader as well, and of course be rooted.

Thanks for clarifying that jonathan. I get off of work in an hour. So ill mess with it after. Im real grateful for everyones help

edit; I successfuly installed ADB, and haven't done anything yet - I'm currently in the process of updating it.

2 quick questions though.

1. when running adb and inputting "abd devices" i get
[015a7D751701F00E]. That obviously means that it's reading my phone right? But I was confused because I saw on another person's tutorial that the device's model number showed up. I was just curious.

2. I read in the 2.2 froyo update post that I needed to install the driver for my phone? So I downloaded the "USB_Drivers_32_bit4.6.5", when I first purchased the phone the drivers of the phone were installed automatically. Do I still need to install this driver? Tbh, I think I got a little ahead of myself by installing it. Did it override the current drive I already had for my phone?

Thanks in advance guys.
