Former Evo users that bought Epic?

I hope this was sarcasm. A timing belt and serpentine fan belt are two very different animals. I feel for the guy that is paying that bill.

Back on subject, can someone who has an Epic tell me how fast the camera is? My Moment is super slow after hitting the capture button (takes decent pictures though). When I had a Pre, it would snap photos off as fast as I pushed the button. How fast is the Epic. Thanks

no sarcasm. i went to get a timing belt changed and was told it didn't have one but that another belt i did prob need to change was the serpentine belt. i know they're two different things. ignore the serpentine part lol
point was, no timing belt on newer cars. at least not mine.

but yes, back on topic. woops

The epic does have a great screen.but other than that it's a typical samsung phone.I have both the evo and epic, and have to say I prefer the evo hands down.htc has always made a tremendous phone considering that is what there focus is.the call quality between the two is the epic sounds very tinny when I call people According to what they say.the camera on the rear of the evo takes some time to make the correct adjustments on but once you dial it in it is amazing.I caddy on the PGA golf tour and had a photographer showed me how to dial in the settings.I ve never really needed a physical keyboard so I downloaded the better keyboard application and luv it.I know some people desire a physical keyboard.I prefer the build and feel of the evo.I luv the weight of it because I know where it is at all times.the epic feels a little plasticky to me and dosent seem as solid.this is strictly my opinion on both the phones

I like everything about the Epic except for three things that are a really BIG deal to me:
1) The Epic feels very plasticky and toy-like
2) No Sense UI
3) Lack of decent widgets

Those three things make the Evo my prefered phone for now but I am looking into flashing my ROM now for the first time ever. If I can get HTC's stock ROM on my Epic then the Epic wins hands down. Here's what I do like:
1) screen
2) keyboard
3) cameras are actually BETTER that on the Evo despite less pixels
4) more responsive

i really don't think you're gonna be able to flash an Evo ROM onto your Epic. it doesn't work like that unfortunately. they might be Android, but things are located in different places.

Well I wasted a whole day playing with my wife's new Epic. I picked it up while she was at work. I gotta tell you, the screen is amazing(for games). Played the Asphalt demo and to be honest, there is no comparison, it smokes the Evo for game play. Now with that out of the way, here is my opinion of the two phones. Game play and screen are the ONLY on ups the Epic has on the Evo; at least right now. Now mind you I have a rooted phone with a custom ROM so I'm running 56 fps, no overclock. The capacitive buttons on the bottom are not responsive at all on the Epic. You have to push them like three or four times to get a response. Then the light goes out and you have to poke around to see where they are. The should be painted on or something. If you are into widgets, you better get ready to pay for them because they are few and sparse on this phone (already shelled out for Beautiful Widgets) because there is no replacement except one stock round clock which had the wrong time. As far as speed, well again there is no comparison IMHO. With my custom Kernel the Evo wins hands down and that is no exaggeration. But lets wait and see what the guys over at XDA come up with. Maybe someone can find a use for the slider keyboard, I don't like it and it's always moving about in your hand. The phone (Epic) has Swype and a pretty decent Froyo like keyboard. I would probably never use the physical keyboard but thats just me.

But we are Android friends here and I am not here to slam one Android for another. However being a launch day Evo owner with absolutely no problems from my device, I wouldn't trade for the Epic for anything. The programs on the Epic do a lot intuitive things like having a built in task manager/killer. But for the most part, the Evo does them faster and smoother. The Epic giving the option of pre-defined replies for phone calls is nice (that's pretty cool gotta find a way to do that). Audio/Video out to three way RCA video is a killer feature that lets you see whats on your screen. Frankly would have rather had that than HDMI out on my Evo. All in all the Epic is a pretty solid offering. However, coming from the Evo, I am quite happy where I am and what I use it for. The Evo is just a killer phone. Form is a little difficult for the Epic cause it's going to be hard to find a case thats not like an Oderbox sp? or something. But closed not much difference.

Bottom line, it's 4 o'clock in the morning now I couldn't get close to that phone if I wanted to. She really likes it and I'm sure the new Epic owners will fall in love with their Android handset as well. But as the tread asked, as an Evo owner, in my heart and mind, I'd choose the Evo any day. But some good 'ole sibling rivalry is good right?

BTW, the Epic camera is pretty fast and takes pretty good shots as well. Just have to figure out how to use the front facing one as soon as she goes to sleep. ;-)

I have the Evo and picked up the Epic right before radio Shack closed because it was the last one and after seeing it... I couldn't wait.
After 7 hours of playing with the Epic....wow..The screen lives up to the hype, the keyboard is great (I've been missing my tp2 keyboard since getting evo) its slightly faster than Evo starting up and with many apps, the games look great, also I found video conferencing to be quite smooth on the Epic on 3g.Evo needed 4g or wifi to be smooth. On the positive note for Evo ...the sense shell is better, screen size, youtube app, kick stand and camera is better.I moved my videos and pics to the Epic and was suprised viewing them on that super amoled...maybe the iphones camera isn't better, could just be the screen making it beautiful.
Epic needs 2.2 and kick stand Evo needs a super amoled,a bit more processing speed.

Both these phones are in top 5.Can't go wrong buying

Well said. I was one of the people that never got to root my Evo before upgrading to 2.2 and lost my ability to force roam so this Epic was kind of my cop out but not that I have it I'm torn..Its going to be a hard decision of which one I'm keeping. I think theres a chance if I can root my Evo and flash back 2.1 (when I LOVED the Evo), that it can def.stand up to Epic.

Wanted to ask you were able to increase FPS? So when you play Asphault 5 on Evo its no longer choppy??

Okay, so after spending all night setting up the epic for the person that's going to be using it, I did notice slight lag on the touch screen, just like the evo when multiple apps have been loaded on the phone. When I try to set an app shortcut on one of the home screens, it lagged so long one time that I was able to open another window to add another shortcut. A little quirk, but no big deal.

Other than that, would I ever drop my evo for the epic, no. it's definitely a very nice phone, just not for me. Oh, and I do see why people were praising htc sense over touch wiz. The htc widgets are fantastic. Even though I've found many replacements for when I use launcher pro, I still like having sense ui and the widgets, especially the individual bluetooth, wifi, and 4g widgets.

do you mean long pressing and then it opening that window to select widgets and so on and so forth?

if so, this was a huge problem in 2.1. on the Evo, when going from 2.1 to 2.2 that time was cut in half, approx. so when the Epic goes to 2.2, that will change.

For me it will all come down to the battery out performing the Evo. According to initial tests from Engadget found in their review, its very similar to Evo battery. Going to wait and see what people are saying...especially those of you that switched between the two.

So far for me, my Epic battery is definitely better. It is noticbly better. I won't know for certain until after a week. I have no instant draining issues like my Evo.

Wow, I find some of this hard to believe. I have both phones and a Stock Epic on 2.1 is easily more responsive and fluid than a overclocked Evo with Cyanogen mod. It is quite noticeable.

For those who like Sense, what is it that you like? Launcher Pro is so much better and has most of the same type of sense widgets. I actually find many aspects of Touchwiz to be more intuitive than sense. The TouchWiz dialer is superior to sense. The Contacts list screen is much better as well.

Just kidding that's not Sense but I do like that you can get the Sense experience without the bad build quality of an HTC phone. Everyone praises HTC like they're the best thing since sliced bread when it's actually quite the opposite. HTC has notoriously bad quality control issues, screen separation, cheap usb ports that fall off within a week and even intentional bugs that cripple your phone, you can keep Sense no thanks, lots of free alternatives that do the same thing for free in the Market.

bet i could make my Evo look like that though :p

EVO owner here. I went into the store and spent over an hour on the Epic and my thoughts:

The EPIC is very very nice! The screen is noticeably better and brighter than on the EVO but the EVO is bigger. So clincher here will of course be whether you think the screen is SOOO much better that you can forego the extra size.

For me... I can do without the SAMOLED (for now at least). Where the EPIC really shines is in the smoothness of the screen transitions and animation (which may have more to do with framerates), and in the video camera (still shots are actually pretty comparable even if the pictures themselves look better on the SAMOLED screen of the EPIC. I was pretty surprised at the difference in quality with the video camera in the same lighting conditions. The Epic is just that much better than the EVO with video. So if thats a determining factor then the Epic is your best bet. I only rarely use my phone for video ... so its no biggie for me and the EVO is not terrible... I have found its video to be very usable and most people compliment me on the quality of videos I upload to youtube with the phone. Bear in mind also that the videos once uploaded are really not that much different in quality as what you might see on the phone itself because of the compression.

Here is what made my decision for me: Froyo and the GPS issue. I tested the GPS side by side in the sprint store and the EVO, without assistance from the towers, got a lock and more satellites that the Epic in a much faster time. The EVO got a lock indoors in under 20 seconds... and it found 8 satellites with a accuracy of 8 meters. The Epic in comparison took forever to find 4 satellites... when I just let it sit there it eventually found 6 and the accuracy went to 150 meters before it quicly lost the satellites again. I am sure its better outdoors... but indoors its a crapshoot.

The second thing is Froyo. I do not trust Samsung to provide either an update to the GPS or a Froyo + TouchWiz upgrade in a reasonable amount of time. I would estimate at best that they MIGHT get something for us around xmas time at which point I will assess my options again and THEN maybe buy the Epic. Until then the advantages of the Epic don't out weigh the Evo with Froyo and browser supported flash. At least for me...

I was watching the Radio Shack rep demo it for another customer and it looked dull from a distance. I keep hearing how good the screen is so I was scratching my head as well. It could be the interface home screen it was currently in>Touch Wiz. I'm pretty use to Sense so mayvbe everything just looked darker to me. Wanted to grab it and see if it was at brightest but I was too busy trying to get mine on, (which I never did before I left.just held it)

I remember thinking the same thing about the Moment when debating on the Hero a while ago. I'll find out soon enough

The one plus about the evo's screen is that it does go really bright. On auto brightness about halfway, the screen is actually brighter than the Epic's screen on full bright. Of course the Epic's screen is better, but it's much harder to tell in indoor lighting. Outdoors (but not direct sunlight) is where I really saw the difference.

I took some pictures of this with another EVO at the store. But the EVO's screen makes up for colors (or lack thereof) with brightness.

Site won't let me upload attachment of 1mb? Oh well.

my comparisons of the camera on the evo and epic is the Evo seems to win. I did multiple shots to compare and even though people are saying the epic camera is better, I don't agree.

I also noticed something weird at the sprint store. I was playing with a couple of Epics they had on display and noticed google maps was not included with the phone. Yet the epic I have does have google maps. I didn't have to download anything out the box. Is this sprint hiding the gps issue. I know this sounds like a conspiracy theory but just a little weird to me.

This is what I meant. Its just seems duller but I actually understood what Mr.Virginia was saying when I went to a few web sites. When the colors are bright and vivid they're like water but when dull, then it appears a lil muddy.

Oh really? I wasn't aware of that. Never had that issue ever with my EVO. Hopefully that gets fixed on 2.2.

Is that photoshop or did you get the HTC clock widget from an app somewhere?
