Root App remove

Would it be true to say that I can merely root my Desire to remove useless HTC apps and just continue booting the ROM that is originally on my Desire (Sense + Eclair 2.1)?
The reason why I ask this is because most of the new Froyo ROMS have some sort of functionality lost one way or another. If I keep my original ROM this would mean everything works as it used to before I rooted right?

If so, can I add the functionality of App2SD+ onto my stock ROM? (Without going up unofficial Froyo's)

Yes you can to both questions

I missed that bit, yes you would need a custom rom or if you are on about branded crap a generic rom

so does that mean I NEED to switch roms to delete preloaded apps?

I don't mean apps that a carrier puts on; my Desire is unbranded. I mean the apps that HTC puts on, for example "Photos" which is HTC's version of Gallery, Stocks, Plurk, Peep, Footprints....

I thought you had to create a custom version of a ROM to remove some apps? Rooting means you can uninstall them but then they just reappear?

What? Rooting means you can uninstall those apps but they re-appear?
Could you expand on that..?

if i understand you correctly, what you want is a phone without the HTC apps; but, do you also want it without the Sense UI, which contains all those apps? If so, then you would probably like the stock/vanilla android 2.2, to which you then add apps as you require/wish

I do want to keep Sense UI but I just want to remove a small number of pre-installed apps from HTC. :/

I just don't like apps I don't use to fill up the app drawer, especially since they're all in alphabetical order and that you can't exactly organise them.

Open your rom zip file in WinRar, don't extract it, just open it. Within WinRar go into the system > app folder. In here are all the apk files of the apps that are installed by default and which you cannot normally remove. It's then simply a matter of looking down the list and deleting the ones you don't want.

It's worth looking carefully as some have a widget in addition to the app so you'll want to delete both. (Pretty certain Plurk has.) Once you've deleted the apks you don't want, copy the zip file onto your SD card and flash as normal. I made a copy of the rom file and edited the copy so that I had a working one I could use if I broke it, but I would still do a nandroid backup first.

I've removed the apps you mention from a Froyo rom, you just need to open it in WinRar (or whichever) and delete the apps you don't want. I tried it this afternoon and now have Froyo with Sense but without stocks, peep etc.

How about Updating system apps to free up data space ????

for instance deleting the stock google maps and replacing it with the new updated maps and also deleting stock flash player and replacing with updated flash player.

would you be able to insert the new .apk using winrar ????

You should be able to using Titanium backup once you're rooted, I removed a couple unwated apps last night and I'm still on stock Telus 2.1.

Only the /data/apps can be removed that way. /system/apps cannot be touched unless rooted, where you can either remove them from the ROM before you install it, or afterwards using android-sdk

I've not tried it, but it sounds reasonable. Give it a go.

did you replace the .odex file as well and remove the widget files before adding the browser ??

are there any tutorilas for building your own roms ????

I think it's going to be complicated really.

No, I only swapped the .apk out.

Removing system apps does not give more space I'm lead to believe (based on a post made by the Defrost developer on xda)...
