Second thoughts.... Nooooo...

So I am starting to have second thoughts on keeping the Captivate vs. swapping for an iPhone.

Now, I actually love this phone. But my gripe is more with Google's stance and the lack of... games (yes, games) coming out. Yes I know this isn't a PSP, but...

I check out the iPhone library, they have games coming left and right. NHL 2K11, Mirrors Edge, Madden 11, Final Fantasy and original Square Enix games. Not to mention Epic working on games now as seen today.

Am I the only one who doesn't like the fact that this platform is neglected for the most part by Devs?

That said, I doubt my Captivate will be getting returned but I hate having second thoughts!

Android isn't really a gaming platform the way it is right now. In my opinion if you want an pure gaming phone you should go with iphone with their gamcenter thing they are trying to implement

Gamecenter seems useless to me. I just want some NHL 2K11! Atleast if they released it for PSP too.

But I do see why it is. Android devices are just all over the place in terms of specs. iPhones just have one single market to appease - one carrier, one phone. But yeah, I know when buying the Captivate that games were the weakness on Android and will remain so. But Devs should give us something other than Gameloft games that don't work half the time!

I thought i read something about the devs that make games for ios devices , if they try and make better or on par game on any other device they will be punished in the apple app store. Since ios are the dominant devices in the market they dont want to risk that

Wow, didn't know that.

Actually just read EA has a pretty decent sized lineup for Android. But they aren't releasing much information. Just stating so far Sims3, NFS Shift (both already out) and Madden 11.

I'm a recent transplant from the Apple garden as well, and my biggest dissappointment with the Andoid OS was the market. However, I noticed a couple things.

1.) We're starting to get a lot of the games that made the iPhone great. iShoot, Diner Dash 2, Doodle Jump (even though Abduction is better), and Zenonia. The only thing that I really miss is Fieldrunners, Bejeweled Blitz, and Zombieville. I'd be perfectly happy if I could get those or something similar.

2.) Don't bother with the top apps list. They may be the top, but not sure what they're the top of. There are much better apps available in the store. You just have to either dig for them, or open up google and go fishing. Do some research. It sucks to have to do that, but it's the growing pains of a new OS. There are a lot of websites like Tested.com that do android apps roundups every monday morning. Just download the barcode reader app and scan the apps they show off that you like. It's a great way to get a feel for apps that you are unsure of.

Again, this isn't as streamlined as the Iphone App store, but like with many things with this phone, and moreso this OS, you have to do a little work. Rely on your Android brothers. There is an awesome community for this OS. Take advantage of it. We're all out here exploring these wonderful devices together. Not a lot is being spoonfed to us.

I have an iPod Touch and Captivate. My GF has an iPhone 4.

We ran the Unreal 3 "Epic Castle" demo from yesterday's iPod Touch release keynote on her iPhone 4. That makes me think that I should get a new ipod Touch for "App and Game Stuff" and go back to my old Nokia that just makes good calls and text messages.

The Captivate has so much potential, but the more I noodle with it, the more limitations I find (very poor 802.11G performance, underwhelming 3G performance, no camera flash, tinny external speaker, no radio, AT&T network). Oh, no games, either.

I returned my craptivate because of the GPS and battery life issues. I just don't think this particular device is for me, but I really liked android. I now have an iphone4, but am not sure I"ll keep it past the 30days. I have discovered that I cannot really know much about a device until I get it and try to use it as my primary phone for at least a few weeks. The iphone4 is a great phone that could be near perfect if it weren't for the concerted efforts of the sadistic bastard(s) at apple who seem to intentionally cripple the device in the oddest ways. There is a certain loss of control that is beyond unsettling for me, and yet the actual hardware (and much of the software) is fantastic. *sigh*. so cruel. an apple-fan coworker of mine said: "it's the perfect phone once you get all the apple out of it." his is jail-broken, of course.
so, to answer your question: if you otherwise like the captivate, then keep it. the marketplace is growing faster than the apple appstore, and google is making an effort to support games in android. I suspect the two platforms will reach parity on games within a year. On the otherhand, iphone4's can be sold at such a premium, you could get one on contract and then sell it for enough to buy your favorite android device outright w/o contract. Quite a few folks have bought iphone4's with this in mind.

I guess more kids are buying this phone than I thought. Where do they get the money?

I'm sorry, I didn't know I wasn't allowed to use my phone to game with on the commute to and from work.

Exactly. It has great potential but noone is really pushing it or Devs aren't jumping on it. Epic Castle demo is just amazing - and the sad thing is, it could easily run on the Captivate but I highly doubt we will see Epic making a run at the Android market any time soon.

Lucky for me, I haven't really had an issue with those problems. WiFi in my room is pretty bad as my wireless router is in the basement. 3G is fine when I'm not in the office (but still pretty quick inside). Night mode works pretty well - but flash should have been included. Pandora > Radio (;)).

And the sad part about it, if it's Jailbroken and you want to add a (for instance) weather widget, you have to download or make a full theme for it. It's still not customization. It's just another theme. Then again, most people Jailbreak for the [open/free] app-store, not customizing.

And I agree, if there is no mention of the Samsung fixes by the end of my 30 days, I might just swap for an iPhone and then once the fixes and/or Froyo come around, sell the iPhone and come back to Captivate. Then again, it's such a hassle I'll probably just stick with this :D

Please do not turn this into a bash Captivate/Android thread. There is a reason I still have my Captivate as do most people here. It's a great device - but some of us prefer it to be more and supported more.
