How do I disable update notifications?

I'm somewhat new to smartphones and have a Motorola Droid with 2.1. About 2 days ago I continue to receive a nag screen or notification to update to 2.2. It doesn't have an option to "don't remind me again" and after calling Verizon they didn't know how to disable this constant reminder.

Since I don't want to update to 2.2 (maybe a few months later) is there any way that I can block or disable this message?

Thank you for any assistance.

Not without rooting.

You may not want to update to 2.2 - but I and most other people who have been running it longer than 2 weeks will tell you - you really really really should upgrade.

Thank you for the reply. After reading of numerous problems in various forums such as shorter battery life, no wi-fi (although I only use that once a month or so), and several other issues, I don't see the advantage. I only have a few applications and some of them already claim they won't work with 2.2 at this time.

Since I primarily use this for making telephone calls and for email when traveling, I just didn't see any need for some type of problems that may arise since it works fine now.

Tried to contact Motorola without success so emailed them instead but if "rooting" is the only option will just have to deal with the nag screen although I was offered the choice of going back to my older VZ phone that didn't have any data, text, or email capabilities which I might do.

Hi, I'm in the same boat as you... I too don't want the update as my phone works great just the way it is... Something I've noticed is after the first day of the notification popping up at least every hour... It hasn't popped up since!! Hope it just remains like that!!

I received a reply from Motorola today about not updating and this was the response:

thats actually not true at all. You will continue to receive the notification after a factory reset. It might go away for a day or so but probably not even that long. Only sure fire way to stop the notification is to root your phone.

I recently flashed my phone back to 2.0 and even back on an OS that old I was still getting update notifications.

Thanks for the reply. Seems odd Motorola would make that claim. I suppose I can just go back to my old reliable LG VX3200 and forget about having email or a few helpful applications.

In one email I tried to make a comparison re this update. If I purchased a computer with Windows Vista and then Win 7 comes out, why doesn't MSFT nag me every 20 minutes to update but Motorola does with their update? No answer on that one.

They do, its called Windows Update.

From your previous posts, it sounds like you'd be better suited with a Blackberry. Not that you don't understand it, but an Android phone seems a bit too "complex" for what you need.

I'm in the same boat as the OP. I received my OTA for FRG22D late last night, but don't want to install it because when I do, my company will put an unlock code on my phone. I would have to enter my pin every 15 minutes of non-use. I would rather not have the bother of that if there is any way to avoid it.

Is there a way to make the notification go away without installing the update? I am rooted but not using custom a ROM, just a Chevy oc kernel.
