Droid Inc getting Froyo now

Yeah, I know I get super mad when a phone that's been out longer than mine and has had more development time than mine has gets an update. It's crazy. I expect phones with the least amount of development time to get updates first.

No i expect a phone that came out after 2.2 FroYo was already developed to have it instead of holding it back for no apparent reason,

Hmmm can we say leaked version already out and no Major problems? ahhh you are right they aren't just keeping it back for no reason, they must have some super secret plan they are working on. And thats why they can't do an OTA for us...

It wasn't about just an older device getting it first it is about how EVERYONE should have it by now.

@binary bisons: Yeah, Froyo is totally rocking on my Droid 1. The FRG22D update was extreme. It doubled my speed. Gotta love it. :D

"No apparent reason"?

Are you privvy, or do you expect to be privvy, to all of Motorola's software design, coding, testing and distribution practices?

The OS doesn't just get dumped onto the phone, you know. If anything, the frequent reports of issues with the leaked version should show you that there was still work to be done on it.

Yeah i am privvy to all that stuff, that why i am sitting here arguing with you....
yeah my comment had no point just like yours

So let me get this straight you are a software developer? and you know the exact way that things are done when creating a new OS?

Yeah you know about those "issues" you speak of... well what do ya know ALLLLLLL OS have them that is why there are updates and new versions coming out and being created, no one expects a perfect OS,

i however expect an OS that has been created since before the phone was released to be on my phone.

So let me get this straight? you are all ok with not having FroYo yet? you are completely content with not getting the best thing for your device? if that is the case then why in the hell did you get a smart phone?

How did you arrive at this conclusion?

because the 2.2 froyo has been done since before the phone was even released

And if they released it before it was ready and had problems, the same people would complain.
You just can't talk sense into the heads of some people.

Actually i never complain when i get a new update or anything, even when i had my BB storm and the new update sucked i never once complained simply because it had fewer problems than the last one.

Because he says so D$%#N IT! Frankly I personally think 3.0 should be on all phones NOW. Hear me Verizon quit holding back for no apparent reason!!!.

If you really want 2.2 go get it it's out there.

I know that it is out there, but i would rather just get the actual one that IMO is ready for us and our phones... anyways this has been fun you guys have fun talking about how other phones are getting the updates we should be getting.

I work in R&D. I am more hardware, but work directly with the developers every day.

It's not about creating a new OS. It's about integrating the OS into the hardware, and integrating Motorola's custom UI/apps on top of it.

Yeah you know about those "issues" you speak of... well what do ya know ALLLLLLL OS have them that is why there are updates and new versions coming out and being created, no one expects a perfect OS,

It's not about being perfect. But Motorola, and everyone else who develops software, has a bug list and some bugs are "acceptable" and some bugs are "unacceptable" and the OS will not get released until the "unacceptable" bugs are fixed.

because the 2.2 froyo has been done since before the phone was even released

You clearly have no idea how software and product development and release cycles work. Software development from large organizations is slow, plodding, and tedious. It's just the nature of the beast. The development of 2.2, I guarantee, has been ongoing since Google actually released the OS.

It isn't that special anyway. I got no wow factor from the leaked version, which with all this hype and angst about froyo, I thought was going to be like putting a V8 into a yugo. Fact is, aside from new featrues, my phone still lags on the keyboard sometimes and it certainly isn't any faster or better at daily use. My battery life is better, but my volume isn't.

I recognize that this isn't the final build, and perhaps the final build will be awesome like it is on the droid, but I doubt it. I think that like me, a lot of people are going to be severely disappointed, because simply, froyo isn't all that on the x, from my experience anyway.

Justin

PS My x has been issue free on leaked froyo.

I didn't think there could possibly be more impatient children than on the Eris forums, but I was wrong. With the Eris I could understand the frustration, because they were given a time frame by VZW employees and it was simply not true. Motorola has said from the beginning that it would be late summer, which is through a good portion of September. Everyone is attacking Moto for saying you won't get the OTA if you used the leak....why? Why would you get mad at someone when you installed stolen (and possibly unfinished) software? They don't owe you a damn thing if you aren't willing to wait for the legit software. As for the whole "Blur makes the phone suck" argument...you knew it had it before you bought it, so that's on you.

I took a risk and installed the leaked software, knowing that it was MY responsibility if there were consequences. Thankfully I was able to revert back, but if I wasn't able to do that, it would have been my own fault.

I'm loving my X and I'll love it even more when the OTA arrives.

binary, I completely understand what you're saying, but what I don't really understand is why the Droid 2 with the same basic CPU, GPU, RAM, UI, etc. was released with Froyo 3 weeks ago and has received a subsequent update while we're still waiting until some unknown time for it.

However, one can pretty easily envision the potential benefit in marketing against the Android 2.1 Fascinate if the Droid X were to happen to start running Android 2.2 at the same time. Why that would be almost like announcing a new phone the day before a competitor's scheduled major new product introduction! Anybody think a 9/8 or 9/9 release for the Froyo update is a possibility?

My best guess would be pretty much exactly what this "Old Man" has to say.

I just Foyo'd my g/f's Dinc and while overall the experience is a bit smoother in most areas I was a bit underwhelmed. I just think the overall hype for Froyo got a bit out of control.

I'm still looking forward to it on my X but I'm not losing any sleep over the wait. My X is still a sexy beast in the meantime - he'll just have sharper fangs a louder roar after a serving of some Froyo goodness.

I'm still running rooted Eclair and am very happy with it.

Just because the DX and the D2 share several components does not necessarily make the two identical. If you were to crack open both phones and hold them side-by-side I suspect you'd find that the mother boards are quite different. Each hardware change in a design requires different changes to the abstraction layer between the hardware and the Operating System.

When Motorola finished design on the D2 they likely had development go straight to building the abstraction layer for Froyo. The DX came onto the scene sooner and either they chose to develop for Eclair or else they ran into a bug during development that they simply couldn't get past while still releasing the phone on time.

Bottom line is that we'll see Froyo soon enough. Speaking for myself I don't want Motorola's development teams to rush. I want this upgrade but I want it relatively bug free. And if it takes a little longer to get it that way... I'm OK with waiting. :D
