So I was reading forums on how to better my Vibrant (hence so many posts by me in the last few days, lol). I came across this somewhere online last night and again today on forum.xda-developers.com

Before I apply this on my Vibrant (I'm on page 6 reading user posts) I wanted to know if it's a good idea to leave GPS on at all times?

Does it drain the battery?
Does some other apps post your location on the web (like how facebook 'places' is starting to do now)?

Thanks

GPS is typically one of the biggest battery hogs on any given phone. Some apps will use cell tower triangulation to locate you, others GPS and some can use both.

If I had the battery reserves, I'd leave my GPS on all the time just for the sake of convenience. When I had my BlackBerry Bold 9700 I had it on all the time and had no trouble with my battery lasting all day with power to spare.

Thanks. I was considering leaving it off at all times, and turn it on when I need it. Best of both worlds...have anyone of you applied the GPS fix posted on forum.xda-developers.com (link in my original post)?

That particular fix has been tried by many with varying degrees of success. It tried it and it does help, but for me still falls short of what I expect to see.

It doesn't hurt to try it, so give it a shot and see what you come up with. Just be sure to have the original settings handy if you decide to revert back to them.

You've seen no wanton use of battery power when doing so?

And by the way, how is the BH_MAN GPS fix doing for you? I applied it, but the results were only fair at best.

I can get 20ish hours out of the phone, which I think is great.

Though gps is still wonky. Using GPS Status from the market, it will 'see' 10 or 12 sats, but only lock to maybe one of them.

Wow...I can't come close to that battery life, and I keep my screen at about 5% brightness!

As for the GPS...yeah, I sure hope it gets fixed. About the best I've seen so far is a lock on 3 sats and about 30' accuracy.
