Some Hands-On Time With The Fascinate Today

The local Verizon store had 2 Fascinate's that were being used by employees. They received them yesterday. I was able to mess around with them for a little while over lunch today.

My initial impressions:

- The screen still looks GORGEOUS.

- 2.1

- The Fascinate seems snappier than the Captivate (I owned the Cap for a month). The random lagginess on the Captivate didn't seem to present itself. Maybe I didn't get to play long enough with it.

- The 4 lower capacitive touch buttons seem much more responsive on the Fascinate. One of my major complains of the Captivate was that I could hit "Home" and nothing would happen. Sometime I literally had to tap-tap-tap the Home button to get it to work.

- Couldn't test the camera w/ flash due to no external SIM card installed. The camera app kept complaining about no memory.

- One of the phones I messed with hadn't been activated, so I couldn't download Google maps or GPSTest and test the GPS.

- The Verizon manager/rep told me that the Samsung rep was saying that you could put on Google Search. No further info was given, but I could tell he wasn't completely up on this phone quite yet (still learning), so I didn't pursue it.

Oh, and I did get to see the gel case(s) that will be available. Didn't catch the brand, but it's very similar to the Body Glove case on the Captivate. It comes in 3 colors; red, blue, and black. It looks nice, and I would recommend anyone getting this phone to pick up the case too. The stock phone is plastic glossy black and slim and can be quite "slick" in your hands when you hold it.

Yes, sorry SD card. :D We took the back off the Fascinate phone, and there was no external SD card installed. The Verizon guy said it came that way. Maybe VZ is going the add the 8GB cards at the time of purchase, or these were special employee demos that didn't come with SD cards. Dunno.

what did you think about the back cover of the phone? From the photo's & handling the Vibrant i'm really not feeling so hot about how the plastic feels compared to how the Captivate & Epic are made. One of the reasons I want to see the phone before I make a decision It just had a cheap feel, imo. Anybody share similar feelings?

The back of the Fascinate is different, but I wouldn't call it "cheap". I would call it more "slippery". The Captivate back was textured hard plastic, but the Fascinate had more of just a glossy black plastic.

As mentioned above, a case will solve any mental issues you may have with the plastic battery cover. :)

Have you held the Vibrant before? Is it similar to that?

Sounds similar to the Omnia II back (which is in my hand right now!) ..

It takes one pixel and lights it up and moves around in about an inch, inch and a half area. Green for missed texts, then you have red, and a few other colors for different things. It is pretty sweet. It turns the screen on and only lights up the one pixel in the left hand corner of the screen. Check it out on youtube.

in regards to the notification light, i wanted to post this photo and ask around. usually, there's only one "hole" for the proximity sensor, so what's the other one? notification led?

sry about the photo quality, i had to over expose it to make the "holes" easier to see. *photo from intomobile*
