Help Brightness

I set the phone to not set brightness automatically and I put the brightness to the minimum. Every time I bring down the notification bar, the brightness automatically raises nonetheless and it's starting to really p.m.o.

I had the very same experience.

I turned off the phone, pulled the battery for 20 seconds and that took care of it.

it's actually a feature (a stupid one). You can raise and lower your brightness by pulling down the notification bar slightly so you just see the bar and nothing else. Then move your finger left and right to lower or raise the brightness. It's a pain in the ass and the only way it can be avoided right now is by leaving Auto brightness on.

I love this feature and use it all the time and I bet I'm not the only one.

The problem I have with it is that if you ever want to leave your phone at max brightness or low brightness, more often than not you end up changing the brightness level as you're checking for the notification. It happens if you're not careful sliding down the notifcation bar...and you shouldn't have to be careful.

I can see that I guess. It's happened to me once or twice if I leave my thumb on the bar too long it moves to the middle setting but it's easy enough to move it back to minimum for me.
It's something that rarely happens, pretty much never anymore since I'm used to just pulling down quickly on the bar to check notifications.

I love this feature and use it all the time and I bet I'm not the only one.

You're right, I use it also and really like it. It's easy, once you know how it works, to not change the brightness when checking notifications and clearing them. It's a nice feature. If one doesn't use it that's fine. But stupid? That sounds quite negative to me. No phone is perfect, I know, I have many smartphones. For my use, this is one of the best. I greatly prefer it over my iPhone 4.

No, the problem was, I didn't even know it until this thread. So it really creeped me out since I kept setting the Brightness to low, and it magically kept going up whenever I checked it 4 hours later and my plan to conserve battery ended up failing.

I can understand your frustration then, but that doesn't really make it a stupid feature does it?
We can say the phone may have poor documentation (I wouldn't know, I haven't looked at it. It's still in the box wherever that is) but IMO it's a clever feature and one of the reasons I'm not likely to use a ROM without Touchwiz.

Another way around this is to install the Power Control Samsung Widget, this gives you a three step brightness switch and shuts off the notification bar brightness control

Haha, I wasn't the one to call it a stupid feature, but yeah, I guess it's pretty useful. Nonetheless, I'm not one to perfectly slide the notification bar down and I realized a lot of times, I'm actually sliding it diagonally, so the brightness keeps changing due to that.

I didn't realize the new Samsung's had this feature. I use an HTC Evo, and have been annoyed at how hard it is to adjust my screen's brightness.

So today I released an app called Brightness Rocker to make this easier. With this app, you can adjust the screen's brightness using the volume rocker buttons on the side of your phone. That means you can adjust your screen's brightness in any app - a brightness slider appears just below the Volume window. The app also includes a home-screen widget and a notification icon for adjusting brightness (which sounds similar to the Samsung feature, but simpler to use I hope).
