Root So I don't want to unroot...

I like having root on my Incredible, even though I haven't had it long. I am still on stock 2.1 with the stock radio. So what's the safest way to get me on par with the OTA without all the bloat? I'm open to good ROMs. I've run Unrevoked3 and have S-off.

What has me cautious is that I don't want to wipe my phone and have to setup again. If there's a way around that, I would prefer it.

I've seen "deodexed" and "zip-aligned" thrown around, and I feel I might know what they mean having an electronic background. But, if someone could lay it out real fast I'd appreciate that as well.

Somethings I've been looking to do with the Inc:

Replace the green highlight color with a reddish orange.
Change or remove the battery icon.

I also want the 720p recording along with the FroYo improvements.

Thanks guys! I hope it isn't too noobish! I read a lot and have forumed for years, but I haven't seen all of my questions answered with certainty by just hanging around.

At the moment, I'd advise you to sit tight. There will be a whole mess of ROMS released within the next week, so unless you want to do a few installs, I'd wait for the dust to settle a bit so you can make an informed decision on which ROM to choose.

That said, to get 720p you need to install the 2.15 radio. This is a simple install if you've already done unrevoked forever.

Deodexed basically means that you can modify packages/replace files in a ROM. Zipaligned means that the amount of ram an application uses has been reduced. Neither of these things would concern the average user, but when given the option, I would take these.

I understand that I will need the updated radio file to make the camcorder work. That's part of me asking what the best way to go about going from stock with root to on par with the update. Where do I get the radio file from? How do I flash it?

Also, since no one has commented on it, I take it there is no way to do any of this without wiping out the phone? I guess I could get Titanium backup to make it not a big deal...

Advice and occasional hand holding appreciated.

Take a look at my site, I have howto's for most of the things you need.

The basic steps are:
Download the 2.15 radio to the root of your fat32 formatted SD card

Boot into HBOOT

The system will scan the card and see the file and ask you if you want to update. Say yes, and you are done. Then just download the ROM you want and install it in recovery.

I always recommend wiping data/cache when installing a new ROM. This makes sure there's nothing funky left behind. Titanium is the way to go.

So no way around a wipe? Oh well, should have expected that going in to root. Thanks for the advice, and for your site. I'll wait for a well cooked ROM to come out, deodexed. :)

You can certainly try to go without wiping it, and just fix issues as they come up. It's just always recommended to wipe, even going between same version numbers. There's just too much stuff lying around, you cant expect the ROM to know what to clean.

If you're going from stock 2.1 to a "stock" 2.2 ROM you can try going without a wipe. It may work. Take a look at [ROM] Virtuous v2.3 (8/29/10): Stock Sense/Froyo v3.21.605.1 w/Fixes & Enhancements - xda-developers and http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=765930.

Both of those ROMS are stock. The first has some minor tweaks. Not wiping may still cause some issues and poor performance, but you might be able to get away with it.

But, from someone who has wiped their phone at least 2 dozen times, it's not that hard to get it setup again.

I ended up trying out the Lite official 2.2 release on Saturday, but I felt it sucked. So I went with Skyraider 3.0 RC2 right after (not even after a full day) and I'm now very content. I've got SetCPU going and have seen the best battery life ever out of the phone the past couple days.

Thanks everyone for the help!

so sabre, I am in exactly the same boat as you explained in your first post. Can you tell my what differences you see with Skyraider? vs your stock 2.1?
And can anyone tell me if the CM-6 stable is ...as perfect as it's going to get? Or should I wait a bit to do my first rom?
I can't go without my phone, so I can't do too much to it, at least anything that might take too much time to tweak. I'm wondering if everything would be good to go right away, camera ect if I put on the stable cm-6?
Also I dont suppose anyones got ideas as to how to get around the whole data plan thingy? lol I've heard switching sim cards...would I lose anything besides 3G if I did that?
Yeah I'm new at this. Just got the phone 2 weeks ago so bear with me. lol
*and thanks for the websites!!

Different launcher, different icons, bloatware removed, etc. It just "feels" better on my phone. I love it:

I found it doesn't like SetCPU, though. It kept causing my phone to bog or lock up (at least, on Skyraider 3.0 RC2 it does). I still get great performance and battery life without it, so I'm not worried.

So far I've tried virtuous ROM and another one that was supposed to be just Froyo without bloat..altho I wasn't able to uninstall stuff sooo..
when I ran the benchmark it was running 50% (both of them were ) better than the stock I had on there tho. But I did run into problems with both really. One the apps kept disappearing..(did I already say this in a post?...)
The other one, virtuous, I ran into a few odd issues. Nothing I can really put my finger on. Just weird stuff.
I'm back to stock again. I keep getting a pop up for the OTA Froyo. How does a person get rid of that? (besides the obvious installing it lol)
Edit: Interesting note, I read elsewhere that Froyo is the one dropping apps. Nothing to do with the custom ROM.

I think I will. I keep changing back to my stock, one more time won't hurt.
I need some help with installing/understanding some things about a theme...anybody up for some questions on that?
Edit: I'm also wondering if anyone knows where the photos/videos are kept if they are in "phone" storage instead of on the sd card? I originally didn't change the settings to have them stored on the sd, and now I have a video that I can't seem to get backed up.
