Root [HOW TO] Root Your Incredible, Whatever It's Status

It's becoming difficult for the advanced user to lay out the proper and most direct path of travel, let alone noobs.

Oh I know, but as a rule, I stay away from leaks, which makes things easier for me.

And I assume since the hole unrevoked used on 2.1 is still there, they will have a 2.2 version soon.

I just wanted a very basic guide I could point folks to, instead of typing things over and over.

It loaded and parsed, but did not apply and did not show any error messages.

Thanks for the suggestion.

I think the problem is wifi tether overwrote this .ko file and I need to restore it to stock before applying the OTA.

Yeah, this is the problem with trying to use the OTA, or do anything "official". It is expecting your phone to be in a specific state. I believe it will use diff's to patch certain things. Which means that when it hits a file that is not in the state expected, it can't continue.

These are basic steps, if you do not know how to flash a file you need to do a little more reading before you follow this. I take no responsibility for your actions, they are yours! If you destroy your phone, I cannot help you. Most of the links I provided have instructions on them. If they are just downloads, it assumes you know how to use the file provided.

IF YOU HAVE ALREADY GOT 2.2, BUT ARE NOT ROOTED, START HERE:

1. Go to RapidShare: 1-CLICK Web hosting - Easy Filehosting and downgrade to 2.1update1.

what are these extra steps? I need to downgrade from OTA Froyo to 2.1 but have no idea what to do

I successfully replaced clockwork recovery with stock and updated to 2.2 but can't get clockwork back. I am s-off. . . tried renaming it and letting it load in hboot but all I get is an error. I'm under the impression that if I can get clockwork back on I can regain SU and that would be nice.

When you go into hboot, does it say S-Off at the end of one of the lines in the header?

If so, you should be able to flash anything.

Can you give the output error?

And PS, I am heading out for the evening, but I will respond to questions tomorrow.

Yes, I have a life. :D

(2.1 rooted trying to get to 2.2 OTA rooted)

Ok, so I renamed the OTA zip file to both update.zip and PB31IMG.ZIP and have tried to apply it during Hboot with no success. As PB31IMG.ZIP is does say parsing, etc but does not apply anything. As update.zip I get no where. I am not sure how to apply the update.zip from hboot. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

6. Reload the Clockwork recovery, yes, you can do this now, even though you are not root, from here: http://downloads.unrevoked.com/forever/recovery/clockworkmod/PB31IMG.ZIP.

This is the part that confuses me. This file is the same file as the stock recovery image used to downgrade from 2.2 to 2.1

If I install this update, won't my phone just be reverted back to 2.1?

Edit: Or is it just named the same? The file is smaller so I'm going to go ahead with this step.

Ok I made it to step 7 and tried installing it in recovery and I get

--Installing: SDCARD:update.zip
Finding update package...
Opening update package...
Verifying update package...
E:signature verification failed
Installation aborted.
I did rename the file to update.zip

Am I doing something wrong?

Edit: lmao..Ok..Went back into recovery and found out I could disable signature verification so now it worked.

I have a life too, lol, so its okay as I amt just able to get back to you. Yes, it does say s-off. The error message says no image or wrong image. I'm certainly not on your level technically with Linux or Android but I have done enough with it to be comfortable with everything that is going on. I just don't know where to go from here. For what its worth the update upgraded my radio from 1.0 to 2.15. thanks for help!
