OKay I know I can google and read through the guide but figured here's just as good. I read through the home screen thread - first off, where's the neat looking clock and weather app? Second, as stated not a super user - what are some good apps for a basic user and how did people remove the stuff on the top bar? I'm sure rooting and all that jazz is way above my head so we'll start small.

There are an few weather clock apps that are quite nice , my two favorite are beautiful widgets and fancy widgets

I'm new to the Captivate/AT&T. I had an EVO 4G for a few weeks and liked the SenseUI additions.

I paid $2 for Beautiful Widgets in the Market store, and I like the result.

I use a semi-transparent clock with embedded weather over a black honeycomb wallpaper, and it looks very similar to the EVO. it's rare when I pay for software, but Beautiful Widgets is nice.

The "neat clock and weather app" is probably fancy widget, its been removed from the market place but ill see if i can find the barcode. The stuff on the top bar are processes that are running, to remove them you need to close them and the easiest way to close them is to download advance task killer and use that, be sure to not kill any apps that you need running like a clock or weather widget or it wont update.

a few apps i use regularly are imdb, international movie database, to read up on movies and stuff like that. tunewiki is a music player that has lyrics with it which is pretty neat, i have a local news app, fandango, cbs sports and espn, barcode scanner and a few free games for when im bored. oh i got a bible too

Beautiful Widgets (a pay app) and Snowstorm (a free app) can do weather (beautiful weather can also do a clock and a whole lot of other stuff) ...

Some apps I'd suggest:
Advanced Task Killer (kill memory hogging tasks)
JuiceDefender (trys to prolong battery life)
3G Watchdog (keeps track of how much of your data plan you've used)
AlarmClock Plus (works better than the stock alarm clock IMO)
AT&T myWireless (lets you access your account from your phone)
Barcode Scanner (lets you point your phone at QR codes to access apps)
Google Sky Map (will be much cooler when GPS is more stable, but effectively lets you point your phone at the sky and see the stars in your area)
PaperToss (stupidly addictive game where you 'flick' paper balls into trash cans)
RingDroid (lets you trim mp3s to ring tones right on your phone)

There was a post on a blog at some point that recommended a "top 50" android apps of 2010. I'll see if I can find it and link it here.

Follow-up dumb question - what's the benefit to rooting?

For me personally rooting gives you access to the "real" android marketplace not atts version, you can remove all att bloatware, and run lag fixes which i think are very beneficial to running the phone to its fullest potential

Does rooting (or anything) help website load time? That's been the only thing that seems slow - hotmail seemed to take awhile but again, first smart phone so I have nothing to compare it to.

yes for me it made dolphin hd open very quickly lag fix i think effects a lot of application like browsing, twitter, facebook etc
