To update or not to update...that is the question.

After reading all the horror stories and people having problems from unreadable SD cards, to bad batteries, to laggy response, browsers not working, etc. It is making me nervous as to whether or not to update to 2.2

I got the update this morning but have not yet installed it because I'm debating what to do. I would just hate to update it and have something go wrong or to have to update it and then do a factory reset and lose everything.

So what is everyone else's opinion. I mean, I feel as though a lot of the people that are having problems either downloaded the update file manually or had a different ROM or were rooted or something. I haven't done any of that so I'm thinking I'd be fine but I'm still hesitant on chancing it.

If you just do a factory reset, all the issues go away.

When i upgraded i was like wtf. Why is it so laggggyyyy.
Then i remember reading about someone factory resetting. So i backed up my stuff, did the reset.
And now everything is AHHHHH maaaaaaa ZING!
So fast seriously. You'll see the difference right away.

Even with the additional bloat ware, and re downloading my apps (which i didn't have to repay for it since the market recognized my gmail log in) its so fast. I love it. I'm glad i did the update even though i had to go thru my settings again and lost text messages.

Have you read any of stories praising 2.2? There are a lot more of those. Chances are that you won't get the bugs, especially if you do as Aesthetically says and do a factory reset.

Also don't be worried about the battery looking bad right off the bat, it'll come around. Mine was unsatisfactory at first, but after a couple days its better than ever.

I would actually go so far as to say factory reset BEFORE the update ( NOTE: You may lose the OTA message, just do the Update.zip. When you get an OTA, it just downloads that exact file to the sd card and starts the update for you. )..then, after you get into Froyo, Factory reset again and you will be more than ready.

Honestly, I would try to backup as little as possible even. Naturally backup things like contacts and save any pics, videos, media to your PC first. I just redownloaded all my apps by hand after having done the RUU ( Basically the Update.zip that also does a full wipe automatically. ) and have loved Froyo. This is a major OS upgrade and you should go into it like that. Just like you really shouldn't install Windows 7 on top of Windows Vista, but instead should completely erase Vista...same here.

As mentioned: It seems to reset battery calibration info, so expect your battery life to be all over the place for a couple days. After a few cycles it should be back essentially where it is now, if not a little better.

Here is my suggestion:

1. backup everything you want to keep (if you only have market apps, appbrain is perfect for apps)
2. do the update
3. factory reset
4. move all apps to sd that you can (app2sd is nice and easy)
5. play around

To reset: Menu->settings->SD and Phone Storage->Scroll to bottom->Factory Data reset.

Update went great, 2.2 is much better, lot's of new features. I installed the update.zip. Did a factory reset, and reinstalled all apps fresh, which I think is a good thing, since 2.2 is different. I did back up SMS and call logs using programs from market, and restored those.

I am also rooted, so I have a nandroid back up of a nice clean copy with all my apps. I also figured out how to get rid of bloatware, confusing and scary, but figured it out. Now, I no longer have Amazon, VZW navigator, City ID, and VZW 3g hotspot.

It's wonderful!

I still have everything in App Brain, but I only use it as a reference. Its remarkable how much useless garbage (apps) I get rid of every time I do this. How many of us downloaded "that app" that seemed really cool at the time and you wound up never opening it again?

haha, I managed to clear out a number of apps as well, and I don't even download a lot and DO uninstall apps a fair bit Course, I also still have a few of "those apps"...never know when you'll feel like running from a zombie hoard, so I keep "Zombie, RUN!" close at hand, hehe.

A factory reset did not fix my "can't get 3G without toggling airplane mode or turning the device off/on" problem. What good is a smartphone that can't get data? I would recommend not updating. I'm working on downgrading my phone.

Sorry about your problem, but that seems like a very rare hiccup, and from the bits I've heard from VZ in regards to this it seems like it might be a rare hardware issue that is not compatible with Froyo, though knowing VZ's techs they probably flipped a coin on that...

Anyways, my point is you should not be discouraging people from updating based on that. Very few people have had that issue. Hopefully some more details can be found out about this problem and it can actually be fixed ( or confirmed as a hardware issue and phones be replaced. Many people with that issue already have new phones on the way though. )

I got a new phone and it had the exact same issue so I don't think it was just a "very rare hiccup". I suspect more people have the problem, but don't realize it because they don't reboot their phones. I have a friend who is with VZW and I asked her if she's having this issue as I thought it might have something to do with the towers. She told me she doesn't even know how to turn her phone off. I suspect a lot of users are like this. They either don't know they have the problem or they have it, dial *228 and the problem is fixed because they don't reboot their phones after that.

Just do revoked forever and if you don't like stock froyo you can get a custom ROM from a developer.

I updated earlier and so far everything is working good. Will report back as far as how my battery is over the next few days. So far I like a lot of the small changes that I have seen with Froyo and definitely notice a difference in the speed of the phone.

I say go ahead and update. It's not like they're gonna push out 2.1 again for the few that had issues. I certainly have no regrets.

Correct. Having root is also fairly risky for non-technical users. Theres a reason it is locked out. ( Though, I do wish there was an official method of obtaining root. I also understand why they can't for various legal nightmares it could cause. )

ive been lucky so far, i updated without a reset and everything is nice and smooth. i also just got a replacement phone like 3 weeks ago so it really wasnt bogged down with much still at this point so i think that has helped me avoid any issues

My phone has never been laggy, and I have only seen improvements with the update. The only issue I have is that the browser will not delete the history when scrolling back, or reset back to my home page with a task kill of the internet. Is anyone else having that problem?

Same here. I wanted to try without resetting so I didn't lose all of my settings. I've had no issues so far.
