Gorilla Glass in Galaxy S'

According to Samsung's level 2 support, the Captivate variant is made with a, "hardened material, but not Gorilla Glass". Support was not aware of any current Galaxy S variants being made with Gorilla glass, and would not comment on whether the announcement meant that future production would incorporate the Gorilla glass.

They advertise gorilla glass on the captivate.

I still do not feel comfortable using the phone without a screen protector. I am on my third Captivate and plan on keeping this one. I did not use a screen protector on either of my first two, and honestly, did not see any scratches. However, because there are so many people in this thread talking about small scratches showing up on their phones, I do not want to take a chance. I am a little OCD about things like that on a new phone.

I have had multiple iphones in the past and never used a screen protector with any of them. I only had one scratch, and that was from sand at the Jersey Shore. Just another reason to avoid Jersey.

I always keep it in a side belt pouch and don't have a screen protector. So far so good.

i have a very small, 1mm scratch that isn't too deap on my screen. only noticeable if you hold it at a certain angle....

I put my phone in a cloth bag that comes with sunglasses and is safe for polycarbonate lenses. Then, I can just carry the phone in a pocket with whatever. Always works for me.

Of course, if my second Captivate fails to give good GPS and WiFi performance (as good as or better than an iPhone 3G from 2008), I'm going back to my brick-like Nokia 5800 (with radio and better speakers).

I actually just put a screen protector (the AT&T 3 for $10) on my Captivate. Took me forever to get it as close to perfect as I'd find acceptable. My first captivate fell victim to the 1mm scratch syndrome. I started to feel a bit of fear of using the damn thing. I figured the $10 was worth it. Hopefully it actually works.

I seriously thought about taking the Captivate back and getting an iPhone 4, but after a bit of research, it seems that the iPhone 4 is also prone to the 1mm scratch issues.

Man, the AT&T screen protector was a total piece of garbage. They put a little sticker on the front face of the film that was way too sticky and was impossible to remove cleanly without ruining the film. Why the heck did they put a sticker on the front surface? And why use super sticky sticker when they could have used a post-it like sticker tab.

I just ordered bestskinsever with their 15% off coupon. I hope it works out better than that AT&T garbage.

They're all prone to scratches no matter how hard the screen is supposed to be, you would have to be absolutely retawded to trade this in for the iphone because the screen got a 1mm scratch.

That super sticky sticker is for aiding in the release of the front film after placement.

Mine had no front film, and the sticker/tab was on the screen protector itself.

Removing it caused the corner to warp slightly so now it won't lie flat on the Captivate's screen. Otherwise I got a perfect application with no bubbles or dust.

I got this reply from Samsung Twitter page when I asked directly if the phone had Gorilla Glass and that no one was sure:

"I can affirm that it does. I checked internally after viewing Corning's site. ^Leah"

This may not be the end of the discussion, but this is someone that is responding to public questions and I find them more credible then a phone rep that may be contracted out.

Gorilla Glass is wildly misunderstood and misrepresented... Not that it isn't used on the Captivate, but that it's any more scratch resistant than actual glass. They use it on the iPhone 4 and it's by far the easiest scratched of all of the iPhones. I had to take one of my many Captivates back for a scratch on the screen and I kept it in my front left pocket by itself. There are rampant reports of both of these devices being prone to hairline scratches.

I'm absolutely sure that Gorilla Glass is 30X more shatter resistant than actual glass, but it's sure as hell not any more scratch resistant.
