How long does it take for your apps to backup from your google account on a new phone?

So I've been told that all your apps are atached to your google account and that if you get a new phone once you enter that all your apps will return to your phone. So I had to get a replacement droid and I'm wondering how long it takes cause I entered my google account and it hasn't started doing anything app wise. I got my contacts back instantly but no apps from my old phone have returned. Will it just kinda randomly start doing it?

I had to do 3 resets on my N1 after doing various manual froyo updates - in each case the apps restored within 10 minutes or so and a 'restore complete' notification popped (this was using a wifi connection). How reliable it is I'm not sure, but for me only on the last reset did all 72 apps restore successfully.
I also use the AppBrain app and website to manage my apps in case of future issues.

I was always under the impression that you had to manually go back and download all the apps that you didnt pay for. All the paid ones will be in the market and under your downloads they'll all say 'purchased'...to backup the free ones though you can use Astro file manager or App Brain!
