Root Thinking of Rooting....

Ok, the 90,000,000th topic on this I expect, I do apologise, it's just that you all seem to helpful and I thought someone might answer me some questions... (buttered up enough yet? :D)

Ok so, first off, I have manually upgraded to Froyo, which I like, but I have been thinking of getting a bit more adventurous and rooting.

To do the Froyo upgrade I used the GoldCard maker program for Windows to make a GoldCard. I used my everyday SD card as my GC so I assume this will be Ok to use for rooting?

I realise I will need to downgrade (after only two days!!) but that is fine, read the topic over on xda and it seems fairly easy, so I can cope with that.

Also, fairly confident I can follow the steps to root.

Now, a couple of question I have are;

1 - I have seen a few themes I really like the look of. What I can quite seem to get a handle on is, if I want to install a theme, will I need to be on a custom ROM?

2 - I'm not to fussed about Sense as I use LauncherPro and have done since I got the phone. So is there a stable ROM that will give all the functionality of LP but that I can use a custom theme on? (does that even make sense??)

3 - What are the chances of bricking my phone? Really not up for that. If it goes a bit wonky, is it easy to sort?

4 - Probably tying into question 2, do I need a custom ROM to install new fonts?

5 - OTA updates, I take it these won't be available on a custom ROM?

6 - And lastly, should something go wrong with the phone and it need sent back to T-Mob UK, is it easy enough to get the device back onto their ROM? Is it widely available on the net?

I think that's all for just now, any help, muchly appreciated.

If I can get to grips with the above, I reckon I will be root toot tooting!!

Not sure about themes. I use lp on defrost with a custom keyboard. You can also customise the status and notification bar to whatever colour you want. It's basically vanilla Android.

It's really hard to completely brick your phone. Often you thinly you've pricked it but almost always its recoverable, providing you have a nandroid backup.

As for t-mob, I may be wrong but I think that's one Rom you can't get...

Cheers Dan.

Bit worrying about the T-Mob ROM... kind of off putting.

That said, I can get it back to a HTC Froyo ROM correct?

On that basis, I might just go for it, T-Mob have said it will void the warranty but they also said that when I flashed my old Pixon to a Samsung firmware to remove all the T-Mob crap and they fixed that under warranty with no problems, they just flashed their software back onto it...

Perfect,

Yeah sure T-Mob just send the phone off to the manufacturer, so I suppose if it is an unaltered stock HTC ROM on it, HTC won't care.

Think I am going to go for it, will need to wait a few days until I have a bit more, wee man's 1st birthday coming up, parties to arrange etc!

Will give me some time to pick a good custom ROM. Liking the look of DeFrost(?)... is that a stable enough ROM?

Ok managed to get it all going, started to install DeFrost and now I have a screen with a few colours splashing into the centre to form an X. It has been like this for 10-15 mins.

Assuming this is messed up?

Nah takes a while first time look closely to see if its looping. If it is, pull.the battery out and see if it boots. Give it some time.

When you flash a new Rom, it has to build the dalvik cache. Did you wipe first?

Well, not so much.

The ROM kept force closing and the internet wouldn't connect this morning, it kept shutting the browser off.

So I tried to reflash, it said it was a bad file for the radio?

So restored to the rooted 2.1 and tried to upgrade to Froyo through OTA and then by the method on this forum for the ROM off the Google servers, both which failed.

I factory reset and tried both again, which failed.

I am currently looking to get LeeDroid 2.0 on but not sure if this will work.

Done that, still had bother....

Having bother installing any ROMS now by the looks of it, just tried LeeDroid and ClockworkMod is saying

Installation aborted.
/tmp/recovery.log was copied to /sdcard/clockwordmod.log. Please open ROM manager to report this issue.

Unsure where to go from here, I seem to be stuck on rooted 2.1 and I really would like Froyo back, even if it not a custom ROM.

Uninstall Rom manager

Delete Update.zip from your SD card.

Remove the ROM from your SD card. (it could be corrupt)

Reinstall ROM manager

Download clockworkmod recovery in ROM manager.

Put ROM back on SD card and reflash through ROM manager. Have you backed up your apps? If so, Choose data wipe in rom manager when flashing. If not, do it.
