I want to cry! Getting fed up with this phone! Help!

Can anyone help me? I love this phone, or I WANT to love this phone fully, but the fact that it has no proximity sensor is just becoming too much. I hang up on people almost every call I make!!! Either that or I somehow start a 3 way call, or put the other caller on hold while I accidentally dial a random # from my contacts.

It's affecting me enough that I'm seriously thinking of bringing this phone back and exchanging it for the moment. I don't want to, I have all my apps and stuff set up, but this phone isn't worth it for me if it hangs up on all of my calls.

I have kids, I'm often having to put the phone against my shoulder to use 2 hands while I talk. I need something to lock the screen!

I tried call caddy, but it didn't work right at all. I was still able to end the call and dial while that was enabled. Is there any other kind of app out there? Third party? I'm desperate because I only have like 20 more days to exchange the phone if I can't find a solution.

I can understand your frustration. The first few times I used my phone I called numbers where you enter an extension. Well, after I entered the extension I didn't minimize the keypad and it would dial that number even though it wasn't a valid number. LOL duh me.

I was also hanging up on ppl like you. What I did was change the screen time out time to 30 seconds. Since I have done that I have not accidently hung up on anyone or made any calls. It isn't a perfect fix since I have to then hit the menu button to tap the 'end call' button or hit the red end call button on the face plate to hang up, but until HTC/Sprint come up with a fix it works for me.

You just made me realize something!

I have my screen time out set to 15 seconds, BUT...

I have screebl installed, it's a backlight regulator app, that keeps the backlight on when the phone is within a certain angle range, then it turns the backlight off when the phone is flat.

I just realized that this is preventing the backlight from shutting off at all when I'm in a call, thus my phone doesn't lock after the normal 10 seconds, like I've read that it's supposed to.

You may have just solved my problem!!! *off to uninstall screebl*

I'll have to go back to the app 'screen on' which keeps your backlight on for certain apps that you select instead of regulating it by angle if the phone.

I also found this to be an inconvenience and hope HTC will do something about it.

Also, do report your problems to app developers - you will only make them better in the long run.

Sorry for the smart-alec response... This is the 4th thread I've seen about this "issue". It's hard to believe so many people are having a hard time with it. Again, no offense intended. I hope everyone is able to find a suitable solution to what is an unfortunate oversight (missing prox. sensor).

All you have to do is go to the home.screen from there I.choose the calculator app that way it.doesn't mater what my cheek presses but perhaps for some that Is to much

lol, well I do that, when I'm not busy buckling my kids into their car seats, or anything else that requires 2 hands and the phone pressed against my cheek & shoulder.

Hmmm... have you ever thought of using a headset? Wired or wireless for hands free phone use? I mean come on... even my house phone has hang ups when I try to do that... lol, simple is... simple does! For $10 you can solve your problem, or if that's no good, how. about speakerphone? Confused as too why this is a problem? You want to use the phone and your hands... a locked screen isn't the answer, freeing the hands is more the solution. Just my honest and humble opinion.

I've never had this problem on my G1, but, to be fair, most of the time I just use my bluetooth headset.

I've never had issues with this on my house phone, nor had I had issues on the samsung instinct.

Actually, no, lol... I would think the kids are and would be more important to your hands then maintaining a phone call, for the momentary inconvenience of being on a speakerphone you could still talk but handle the task at "hand" properly... a headphone is what you need IMO if you are on the phone so often anyway where you are worrying about losing or not being able to interrupt a call.

Yeah, I don't know, I have never been one to use a head set.

I just wish call caddy would have worked.

Oh well, I mean it's frustrating, I wish they'd have done something to turn the screen off while in call. I read about people who says theirs turns off after 10 seconds into a call, mine goes almost a minute.

Confused by this post. Whenever I am on a call, the screen goes blank. Isn't that the proximity sensor at work?

To be clear, every call I ever make / take, once I hold it up to my head, the screen blacks out after a few seconds, preventing me from hitting any on-screen options inadvertently. To get back to the screen while on a call, I hit the 'call' button and my screen lights up again.

That would be fine and dandy, except mine doesn't time out. I don't care about having to unlock the phone again, if the screen would just go blank. It takes a minute or longer, and sometimes never times out on mine while in call.

I don't just hang up on people either, I've accidentally started a new call, putting the person I am chatting with, on hold. I've opened a new text message, etc.

i think all of this can be avoided if htc made a simple UI change. for example, why do we need a End Call button on the screen when we have a button that does the same thing?

I have the same problem and mentioned it in my thread in this same forum. My screen blacks out somewhere around 15 seconds, but that is still way too long... like you, I've hung up on numerous people, 3 way called, hung up then called, sent random texts, etc.

I'd like to set my screen timeout to about 3 seconds... long enough for me to select the keypad if I know I'll need it, otherwise the screen should go black before anyone ever answers my call.

Any idea on how this might be accomplished? Surely there is a setting somewhere that controls this delay. I haven't run across it yet. If it isn't accessible through the settings, surely it can be modified in the ROM or otherwise?!

Great idea. Just leave the screen active the whole time during the call, and give perhaps two or three sliders, maybe top middle and bottom of screen. One to hang up, one to open keypad, one to get back to normal call screen from which you could access contacts or other phone apps during the call.

You're pressing buttons due to the fact that the screen is based on capacitance, correct? Well, I don't have any issues, and I think I know why. I have a beard, which puts a buffer in between the screen and my skin, therefore I don't have any capacitive interaction with it.

In conclusion: GROW A BEARD

IRL I formulate worst case scenarios and contingency plans. True we have a hardware button but its small even when backlit for some this can be a pain. The idea is to make things simple and obvious how its utilized. I personally wish there were no physical buttons whatsoever. Most people love and embrace the touch screens, hence why they put the hang-up on it as well.

A touch button can be accidentally pressed fairly easily. A slider across the screen however can't be.It is the easiest fix I could think of and still meet the criteria of keeping an object on touch screen.

Many people might view the hardware buttons as being more complex and less efficient than just having everything on the touch screen.

But I understand your point... the hardware was designed with physical buttons, and we can't change that, so maybe we should just optimize from what the phone allows. I would happily let the screen instantly black out and require a hard press of the right button to hang up, and the left to get the screen back active so I could have access to the keypad etc. If someone offered that as an app, I'd buy it.

But what FrogSplattter suggested is very elegant. It would work on any Android phone, whether it had hard buttons, a proximity sensor, whatever. Of course if you had a proximity sensor you might not need or want the app, but it would be very universal across all phones. Let the screen stay on, give sliders for common functions like hang up, keypad, home screen. It'd love to try that and see if it works as well as I imagine it would.

I just read a new post and I instantly thought about your thread here, which I read earlier today. Open market and search for "proximity sensor",
this will solve your problems. Someone just created an app that uses the backlight sensor to lock/unlock screen during calls. It works phenomenally, note that you MUST have auto backlight ENABLED. It's sweet, I've already been playing with it for an hour straight!
